Believing two-folds and receiving a double-portion
Of the people in the Bible, Job who was well-known for suffering the most afflictions, was ironically one of the people who diligently trusted God. He offered daily sacrifices on behalf of his children; and his trust for God did not sway a bit even when all of his possessions were taken away and he was afflicted with a disease. That is why today’s Scripture text is telling us that he received a double-portion of blessing as a result of his faith. In short, he was a man of faith who believed two-folds and received a double-portion of blessing. Job’s faith was God-centered life. He was a model example of complete faith. Moreover, he is telling us the secret to receive two-fold blessing instead of failing in the midst of tribulations by receiving two-fold blessing through overcoming the extreme tribulations.
I. I. The two-fold blessing that was given to us “first.”
Exo 16 records the “incident of Manna” that God gave as daily bread for the Israelites during their wilderness journey. When God gave manna to the Israelites, He allowed each person to gather what they needed daily which was one omer per day for the first 5 days. In the beginning, the people became greedy and began to gather more than what they needed. However, they soon realized that those who gathered little did not have too little, and those who gathered much did not have too much. Moreover, what they saved for the next day was perished and was inedible. However, on the 6th day, i.e., a day before the Sabbath, they were told to gather “twice as much.” Because manna did not rain down on the Sabbath Day, the Israelites were told to gather two omers so they could use on the next day as well. God gave them the “next-day blessing” beforehand. However, what is amazing is that what they gathered on the 6th day did not perish the next day. It is truly an awesome miracle and the grace of God given to them “first.” Through this blessing, the Israelites were able to realize that if they obey the Word of God, they will receive such blessing. Through these 40 years of wilderness journey, the Israelites learned that they will receive their blessing “head-start” if they trust God, but everything will crumble and perish if they do not. It is likewise today. The Lord’s Day is the day that we offer worship, prayers, and praises to God. He will give two-fold grace to those who are determined to observe and to follow this day completely (Exo 16:29). I sincerely hope that all of you will receive and enjoy the “two-fold blessing” that the Israelites received “first” by observing of the Lord’s Day completely.
II. The blessing of success that widely opens our path.
Mk 16:1 depicts the scene where a few women including Mary Magdalene conversing with each other while they were heading toward Jesus’ tomb after the Sabbath. “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” Even though they have brought spices to anoint Jesus’ body, it was such a great concern to roll over a big stone that blocked the entrance to his tomb. However, what was the outcome? It is stated in Mk 16:4, “But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.” What they were worried about has been resolved already. From this statement, “The stone was very large,” we can speculate that this stone was impossible for a human or women to move. However, God saw the faith in the hearts of these women and sent His angels beforehand to roll over this stone. What does this tell us? This denotes that as long as we trust only God, He will widely open our paths and give us “blessing of success” no matter how high a barrier may seem to us just like how His angels opened the entrance to the tomb. This statement of concern, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” is concern brought up because of their disbelief that the Lord will resurrect on the 3rd day. Even though God had already spoken and had prepared to give us blessing, we becomes our own big obstacle that blocks our path if we do not trust Him. However, just like how Job confessed after he had passed through the tribulations, “But now, my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5) about God whom he only heard of, I would like all of you to meet God who is opening our paths widely and making us successful through these experiences of grace.
III. The “two-fold blessing” will be given to those who followed until the end.
The Prophet Elijah and his servant Elisha appear in 2Ki 2:1-9. While he followed his master, the Prophet Elisha requested Elijah to give him a “double-portion” of his spirit. At that time, the Prophet Elijah said, “If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not” (2Ki 2:9-10). It ultimately means “If you follow me to the end, you will receive a double-portion of spirit.” My beloved saints! I sincerely hope that all of you will request a “double-portion of spirit” like Elisha while you truly devote yourselves for the ministry of the Church like Elisha. Moreover, there must be the work of endurance to tolerate until the end so that we can acquire it (Mt 24:13). Because today’s world is filled with wickedness like during the time of Noah, it would be difficult to survive until the end if there aren’t double-portions of faith, grace, prayers and praises.
Conclusion
What is common in the people that appear in today’s message is that they all longed for a double-portion of grace and that they ultimately received it and lived triumphant life of faith. Like Job’s two-fold blessing and Elisha’s double-portion, I believe that we will surely receive it when we truly desire for a double-portion of faith. Like how Job received two-fold blessing when he prayed for his friends, I sincerely hope that we will receive and enjoy two-fold blessing with the faith to pray for our enemy, neighbors and for each other.
갑절로 믿고 배나 받고
성경의 인물 중 가장 많은 고난을 받은 사람으로 알려진 욥은 역설적으로 가장 열심히 하나님을 믿었던 사람 중의 하나입니다. 자녀를 위해 날마다 가정예배를 드렸고, 자기의 모든 재산을 다 빼앗기고 자신의 육신마저도 질병으로 고통당할 때도 하나님을 믿는 믿음에 미동함도 전혀 없었던 인물입니다. 그래서 오늘 본문은 이러한 욥의 믿음의 결과로 ‘갑절’의 축복을 받았다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 한마디로 ‘갑절로 믿고 갑절의 축복’을 받은 믿음의 사람인 것입니다.
욥의 신앙은 하나님 중심의 삶이었습니다. 빈틈없는 믿음의 표본이었습니다. 그리고 극심한 환난 가운데서 승리하여 갑절의 축복을 받음으로, 고난 속에서도 망하지 않고 오히려 배나 되는 축복을 받는 비결을 가르쳐 주고 있습니다.
1. ‘먼저’ 주신 갑절의 축복
출애굽기 16장은 광야 생활 가운데 하나님께서 일용할 양식을 주셨단 ‘만나 사건’을 기록하고 있는 책입니다. 하나님께서 만나를 주실 때, 평소 5일 동안은 각 사람이 한 오멜씩 그날에 필요한 양식만을 거두게 하셨습니다. 처음에는 사람들이 욕심을 부려 많이 거두기도 하였지만 적게 거둔 자도 모자람이 없고, 많이 거둔 자도 남음이 없음을 깨닫게 됐습니다. 또한, 다음날까지 둔 것은 썩어서 먹을 수가 없었습니다.
그런데 여섯째 날, 즉 안식일 전날에는 ‘두 배’를 거두라고 말씀하셨습니다. 다음날인 안식일에는 만나가 내리지 않기 때문에 다음날 것까지 두 오멜씩을 거두라는 것입니다. 다음날 주실 축복을 ‘먼저’ 주셨던 것입니다. 그런데 신기하게도 6일째 거둔 양식은 다음 날이 되어도 상하지 않았습니다. 참으로 신기한 기적이요, 먼저 주시는 하나님의 은총인 것입니다.
이 축복을 통해, 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 말씀대로 믿고 살면 이러한 복을 받는다는 것을 깨닫게 됐습니다. 하나님의 말씀을 믿으면 먼저 주시는 선제적인 축복을 받게 되고, 믿지 못하면 모든 생활이 썩는다는 것을 40년의 광야 생활을 통해서 체득했던 것입니다.
오늘날도 마찬가지입니다. 주일은 하나님께 예배하고 기도하며 찬양하는 날입니다. 이날을 온전히 지키기로 작정하고 준수하는 자에게는 하나님께서 갑절의 은혜를 주십니다(출 16:29). 온전한 주일성수를 통해 이스라엘 백성들이 체험했던 ‘먼저 주시는 갑절의 축복’을 받아 누리는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
2. 앞길을 환하게 터 주는 형통의 축복
마가복음 16장 1절부터의 말씀을 보면, 안식일이 지나서 막달라 마리아를 비롯한 여인 몇이 예수님이 계신 무덤으로 가면서 나누는 대화가 나옵니다–“누가 우리를 위하여 무덤 문에서 돌을 굴려 주리요”. 예수님께 바르기 위해 향품을 가지고 왔지만, 무덤 문을 굳게 가로막고 있는 큰 돌을 옮기는 것이 문제였습니다. 그런데 결과는 어떻게 되었습니까? 막 16:4 말씀을 보면, “눈을 들어 본즉 돌이 벌써 굴려졌으니 그 돌이 심히 크더라” 하였습니다. 그들이 염려하던 문제가 이미 해결된 것입니다. ‘그 돌이 심히 크더라’는 말씀으로 미루어 사람의 힘으로, 여인들의 힘으로 옮기기 불가능한 돌이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그 여인들의 믿음을 보시고 천사를 보내어 미리 돌을 옮겨 놓으셨던 것입니다.
이것은 무엇을 말해 주고 있습니까? 우리가 하나님을 믿기만 하면 아무리 큰 장벽이라 할지라도, 천사가 무덤의 문을 열어 주었듯이 우리의 앞길을 환하게 열어서 형통의 축복을 주신다는 것을 의미하는 것입니다. ‘누가 돌을 굴려 주리요’ 하는 염려는 3일 만에 부활하신다는 주님의 말씀을 믿지 못했기 때문에 생긴 염려입니다.하나님께서는 이미 말씀하셨고, 우리에게 복 주시기 위해 다 준비해 놓으셨음에도 불구하고 우리가 믿지 못할 때, 우리 스스로에게 커다란 돌과 같은 장애가 가로막게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 환난을 통과한 후에 욥이 귀로만 듣던 하나님을 ‘이제는 눈으로 주를 뵈옵나이다’(욥 42:5)라고 고백했듯이, 이러한 은혜의 체험을 통해 우리의 앞길을 환하게 터 주시고, 형통케 해 주시는 하나님을 만나는 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
3. 끝까지 따르는 자에게 주시는 갑절의 축복
왕하 2:1-9 말씀을 보면, 엘리야 선지자와 그 종 엘리사가 나옵니다. 끝까지 스승을 따르면서 엘리사 선지자가 엘리야에게 ‘갑절의 영감’을 달라고 요구했습니다. 그때 엘리야 선지자가 말하기를 “하나님이 곧 나를 데려가실 텐데 내가 살아서 올라가는 것을 네가 보면 네 소원대로 되고 보지 못하면 그 일이 이루어지지 않는다”라고 하였습니다(왕하 2:9-10). 결론은 나를 끝까지 따르면 갑절의 영감을 받게 된다는 말입니다.
성도 여러분! 여러분들도 엘리사와 같이, 모든 교회 생활에 전념하는 가운데 엘리사와 같이 갑절의 영감을 구하시기 바랍니다. 그리고 그것을 취하기 위해 끝까지 견디는 역사가 있어야겠습니다(마 24:13). 지금 세상은 노아 때와 같이 죄악이 관영하기 때문에, 갑절의 믿음과 갑절의 은혜, 갑절의 기도와 찬양이 없으면 끝까지 살아남기 힘든 세상이기 때문입니다.
결론
오늘 주시는 말씀의 공통점은 하나같이, 갑절의 은혜를 사모하고 결국 받아서 승리적인 신앙의 삶을 살았다는 것입니다. 욥의 갑절, 엘리사의 갑절과 같이, 우리도 믿음의 갑절을 간절히 소원할 때 반드시 받을 줄로 믿습니다. 욥이 친구들을 위해 대신 기도할 때 갑절의 축복을 받았던 것처럼, 원수를 위해 기도하고, 이웃을 위해, 서로를 위해 기도하는 믿음으로 배나 되는 축복을 받아 누리는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
