Although This World is Full of Thornbush
If there is evidence of love that God showed to Adam and Eve who were evicted from the Garden of Eden, it would be the “garment of skin” that God made for them and allowed them to wear. Hence, even if their life’s path may be difficult and agonizing like the thornbush, the fallen Adam and Eve will be blessed where the juniper will grow instead of the thornbush if they hold tightly unto the “garment of skin” that God made for them. It is the blessing that the ‘Lost Paradise’ becomes the ‘Recovered Paradise.’ No matter how bad this world is stained with sinfulness, and the pain of burden of guilty conscience heavily oppresses this world full of thornbush, we can overcome it if we understand the meaning of “garment of skin” of God and hold tightly unto it.
I. The “garment of skin” is a protective garment that shields you from injury even if you are pricked with a thorn.
John Calvin, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, once said about the “garment of skin” as a “mirror that reminded Adam and Eve that they have sinned and made them become remorseful about their mistake every time they look at it. Like he said, God made the “garment of skin” and have them to wear it so that fallen Adam and Eve and their descendants would repent their sins every time they look at it. Likewise, there are God’s mercy, forgiveness of sins, fervent love and the final great expectations for His people contained in His Divine action that He made the “garment of skin” and allowed them to wear it. Thus, those who repent their sin every time they see the “garment of skin” and be cautious never to walk on the path of sinfulness, will be blessed with God’s absolute protection that they will not be harmed even if they are pricked with thorns. That garment is the garment of grace that contains God’s attention and care. The “garment of skin” is identical to the battle gear for the soldiers which protects them from the weapons of the enemies. As we put on that garment and live on, we must remember and be thankful that God is with us in the battles of our lives. “I will closely monitor you with care and protect you.”–This is God’s love and His determination to protect His people which is the spiritual meaning contained in the “garment of skin.”
II. The “garment of skin” is a garment of grace that covers the sins of mankind.
God did not make the “garment of skin” and put it only on Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When we look at the Bible, we know that God came to every site of wickedness and covered the people with the spiritual “garment of skin” that was invisible. Because God covered the sin of mankind and forgave them with that “garment of skin,” we can say that “garment of skin” of God is the garment of grace. It is written in Mt 14:22-23 that Jesus’ disciples encountered a sudden storm when they were crossing the Sea of Galilee. At that urgent moment where a boat almost turned upside down and people to drown, Jesus walked on the water and calmed the storm down and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” This scene denotes that Jesus who is the Lamb (Jn 1:29) took off his “skin” to make the “garment of skin” and put it on the disciples who were terrified. Likewise, we see from Jn 8:3-11 that Jesus is putting on invisible “garment of skin” and covering the sin of a woman who was caught while committing adultery. Every Jew wanted to stone her to death as it was written in the Laws of Moses, but Jesus did not question her about her sin. Rather, Jesus sent them away by saying, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” and put invisible “garment of skin” on her and covered her from all sinfulness and shame. Isn’t his Word, “Neither do I condemn you!” a scene where Jesus is putting the “garment of skin” of forgiveness of sins and the garment of grace on her? Jesus who is putting the “garment of skin” on her to protect her from pricking, who was helplessly exposed to the streets full of thornbush! Because it is made with Jesus’ “skin,” we can say it is the “garment of sacrifice” of Jesus. By making the “garment of skin” with his life, Jesus gave the juniper and myrtle instead of the thornbush. The desert became the fertile land. Because the Messiah came as the Word, the ‘Lost Paradise’ was changed to the ‘Restored Paradise.’ In order to accomplish this salvation, Jesus took away all the thorns of the world by wearing a crown of thorns and shedding his blood of life at the Hills of Golgotha. He transformed the thorns of condemnation into the thorns of forgiveness. Thus, the crown of thorns on the Hills of Golgotha is the crown of thorns of forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration.
III. God left a thorn in our hearts so that we can overcome the world filled with thornbush.
In the life filled with the thornbush, everyone lives with the thorns. Although the Apostle Paul prayed for the thorns in his flesh (eye illness) to be removed from him, God referred to it as a “Messenger of Satan,” and let it remain in the Apostle Paul’s body. This was to suppress his arrogance. When the Apostle Paul heard this, he realized that “the power of Jesus was made perfect in weaknesses.” He gave thanks to God after he realized that the thorn that is embedded in his flesh is the vessel that is used to retain the power of Christ from leaving him until he enters the Kingdom of God. Thus, when we realize this, all thorns will be transformed into the thorns of grace. Whenever there are hardships and difficulties exist in our households, we can overcome and move on when we realize that “God gave us the ‘Thorns of Satan’ so the power of Jesus stays in us.” It is because the world that confronts and persecutes us is like kicking against the ‘goads.’
Conclusion
God gave mankind the thorny paths and sent Jesus and put the garment of Lamb on us. Through this, he destroyed all thorny paths before us. By wearing the crown of thorns on the cross, Jesus carried the crown of thorns for us; and he gave us the righteousness as gift by proclaiming that we are sinless. As a result, God restored us as the Children of God. Hence, the life we live is the life of Jesus; and we no longer live but Christ lives in us. Thus, the world filled with thornbush becomes the blessed world when we have the “garment of skin” of God.
가시나무 세상이지만
에덴동산에서 추방당한 아담과 하와에게 하나님께서 베푸신 사랑의 증거가 있다면, 바로 그들에게 지어 입혀 주신 ‘가죽옷’입니다. 그러므로 타락한 아담과 하와가 앞으로 살면서 헤쳐 나가야 할 땅이 아무리 힘든 가시밭길 인생이라 할지라도, 하나님께서 그들에게 지어 주신 가죽옷을 꼭 붙잡기만 하면 잣나무가 가시나무를 대신하는 축복이 주어질 것입니다. ‘실(失)낙원’이 ‘복(復)낙원’ 되는 축복입니다. 아무리 이 세상이 죄악으로 얼룩지고 죄책의 고통의 짐이 무겁게 짓누르는 가시나무 세상이라 할지라도, 하나님의 가죽옷의 의미를 깨닫고 붙잡기만 하면 승리할 수 있습니다.
1. 가죽옷은 가시에 찔려도 상하지 않게 하는 보호의 옷입니다.
장로교의 창시자 존 칼빈은 가죽옷에 대해서 말하기를 “아담과 하와가 가죽옷을 볼 때마다 범죄한 것을 떠올리며 분하고 억울한 마음을 갖게 해 주는 거울”이라 하였습니다. 이 말대로, 하나님은 가죽옷을 볼 때마다 범죄한 아담 하와와 그 후손들이 자신의 죄를 회개하도록 하기 위해 그 옷을 지어 입혀 주셨던 것입니다. 이처럼 아담과 하와에게 가죽옷을 지어 입혀 주신 하나님의 행위에는 자비와 용서, 그리고 당신의 백성에 대한 뜨거운 사랑과 마지막 큰 기대가 담겨 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에, 이를 깨닫고 가죽옷을 볼 때마다 자신의 죄를 회개하며 다시는 죄악된 길을 가지 않도록 주의하는 사람들은 세상 가시나무에 찔려도 상하지 않는 절대적인 하나님의 보호의 축복을 받게 됩니다. 그 옷은 하나님의 관심이 담겨 있는 은혜의 옷입니다. 군인으로 말하면, 적의 총칼로부터 보호해 주는 전투복입니다. 그 옷을 입고 살아갈 때마다, 인생의 전투에서 하나님이 함께하심을 기억하고, 감사할 줄 알아야 합니다. “내가 너를 관심 속에서 지켜보고 보호해 주겠다” 하시는 하나님의 사랑과 보호의 의지–바로 가죽옷에 담긴 영적인 뜻이라 할 수 있겠습니다.
2. 가죽옷은 인류의 죄를 덮어 주시는 은혜의 옷입니다.
하나님께서는 에덴동산의 아담과 하와에게만 가죽옷을 지어 입혀 주신 것이 아닙니다. 성경을 볼 때, 하나님은 사람들의 범죄의 현장마다 찾아오셔서, 눈에 보이지 않는 신령한 가죽옷으로 입혀 주셨습니다. 그 가죽옷으로 죄악을 덮고 용서해 주셨기에, 하나님의 가죽옷은 은혜의 옷이라 할 수 있습니다.
마태복음 14:22-23 말씀을 볼 때, 갈릴리 바다를 건너던 제자들의 일행은 갑자기 큰 돌풍을 만나게 됩니다. 곧 배가 뒤집혀 물에 빠져 죽을 수밖에 없는 절박한 상황에 처해 있을 때, 예수님은 물 위를 걸어오셔서 “안심하라 내니 두려워 말라” 하시며, 폭풍을 잠재우셨습니다. 이는, 어린양 되시는 예수께서(요 1:29) 자신의 가죽을 벗겨 공포에 질린 제자들에게 신령한 가죽옷으로 입혀 주시는 장면입니다. 마찬가지로, 요한복음 8:3-11 말씀을 볼 때, 현장에서 간음하다 붙잡혀 온 여인에게 예수님은 눈에 보이지 않는 가죽옷을 입혀서 그녀의 죄악을 덮어 주셨습니다. 모든 유대인은 모세의 율법대로 그녀를 돌로 쳐서 죽이려 했지만, 예수님은 그녀의 죄를 묻지 않으셨습니다. 다만 “누구든지 죄 없는 자가 돌로 치라”는 말씀으로 그들을 물리치셨고, 그녀에게는 보이지 않는 가죽옷을 입혀서 모든 죄악과 수치를 덮어 주셨습니다. “나도 너를 정죄하지 않겠다”는 말씀이 바로, 죄 용서의 가죽옷, 은혜의 옷을 입혀 주시는 장면이 아니겠습니까? 가시나무가 충만히 돋아 있는 길거리에 무방비 상태로 노출된 그녀에게 가죽옷을 입혀 주심으로 가시에 찔리지 않도록 보호해 주시는 예수님! 그것은 자신의 가죽을 벗겨 지어 주신 옷이기에 예수님의 희생의 옷이라 할 수 있습니다.
예수님은 당신의 생명을 바쳐 인류에게 가죽옷을 지어 주심으로 가시나무를 대신하여 잣나무와 화석류를 내어주셨습니다. 사막이 바뀌어 비옥한 땅이 되었습니다. 메시아가 말씀으로 오시므로 실낙원이 복낙원으로 바뀌었습니다. 이 구원을 이루시기 위해, 예수님은 골고다 언덕에서 가시 면류관을 쓰시고 생명의 피를 흘려 주심으로 이 땅 위에 있는 모든 가시를 몽땅 다 거두어 가셨습니다. 저주의 가시를 용서의 가시로 바꾸어 주신 것입니다. 그러므로 골고다 언덕의 가시관은 용서와 화해와 회복의 가시관입니다.
3. 가시밭 세상을 이길 수 있도록 하나님은 우리 속에 가시를 남겨 두셨습니다
가시밭 인생길에서 사람들은 누구나 가시를 가지고 살아갑니다. 사도 바울도 자신의 몸에 있는 가시(안질(眼疾))를 떠나가게 해 달라고 기도했지만, 하나님께서는 그 가시를 가리켜 ‘사단의 사자’라 하시며 사도 바울 속에 두셨습니다. 이는 사도 바울의 교만을 꺾기 위함이었습니다. 이 말씀을 들은 사도 바울은 “예수님의 능력이 내가 가장 약한 데서 온전하여짐”을 깨달았습니다. 자기 속에 있는 가시야말로 그리스도의 능력이 도망가지 않고 그 나라 갈 때까지 머물게 하기 위한 수단임을 깨닫고, 감사를 드렸던 것입니다. 그러므로 이를 깨닫게 되면 모든 가시가 다 은혜의 가시가 됩니다. 가정마다 괴롭고 힘든 일이 있을 때마다, “예수의 능력이 내 속에 머물게 하기 위해서 사단의 가시를 내게 주셨구나” 깨닫고 나아갈 때 이길 수 있습니다. 나를 대적하며 핍박하는 세상은 마치 ‘가시채’를 뒷발질하는 것과 같기 때문입니다.
결론
하나님은 우리 인류에게 가시밭길을 주시고 예수를 보내셔서 어린양의 가죽옷을 입혀 주셨습니다.
이를 통해 우리 앞의 가시밭길을 다 철거하셨습니다. 십자가 상에서 가시 면류관을 쓰심으로 우리 대신 가시관을 걸머지시고, 죄 없다 선언해 주심으로 의를 선물로 주셨습니다. 그 결과로 하나님의 자녀의 자리로 다시 회복시켜 주셨던 것입니다. 그러므로 우리의 생명은 예수님의 생명이며, 내가 사는 것이 아니요 내 속에 예수 그리스도가 사는 것입니다. 가시밭 세상도 이처럼 하나님의 가죽옷만 있으면 축복의 세상이 됩니다.
