Life, the Winter is Approaching
An earnest request of the Apostle Paul who said, “Do your best to come to me quickly” is the expression of love toward his son of faith, Timothy, as well as the confession of an elderly apostle who is drenched in solitude and loneliness as the winter of life approaches him while he is incarcerated in cold prison in Rome. Those countless people who accompanied him in his ministry of gospel as associates all left him one by one and only Luke the physician remained with him. Only his son of faith, Timothy, carried on his teacher Paul’s faith and dedicated wholeheartedly. Thus, the Apostle Paul is telling us in today’s Scripture text the attitude we must possess in order for us to prepare for the winter of our lives as he was faced with the winter of his life and reflected back on the memories of the people he once encountered.
I. Before the winter of life approaches, we must prepare a “cloak.”
Apostle Paul tells his son of faith Timothy to bring his “cloak” to him in v13. How cold this elderly apostle who was over the age of 70 must have been in the prison in Rome that he urged Timothy to bring his cloak knowing that he did not have many days left? However, in “spiritual sense,” the ‘cloak’ denotes very important biblical lesson. It is stated in Rom 13:14, “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” Our cloak should be the garment which symbolizes the precious blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God made them a garment of skin by slaughtering a lamb (Gen 3:21). This foreshadows the work of salvation that God will sacrifice the Lamb on the Hills of Golgotha, skins It, and makes a garment. There are two reasons why the people tremble. The first reason has to do with cold climate and hunger while the second reason is due to sin. Those who tremble in fear after sin are those who are encountering the winter no matter how warm the climate is. Hence, the only way for such people to overcome winter is to put on the garment of “repentance.” They must repent and put on the bloody garment of the Lamb. When we put on the garment of righteousness of Jesus and the garment made of fine linen, the judgement of winter due to transgressions will disappear. That is why this garment is referred to as “righteous acts of God’s holy people” in Rev 19:7-8. If we do not put on the garment of righteousness of skin of the Lamb that is prepared by the blood of atonement shed on the cross for us, then the judgment is already here before us. Didn’t the bitter wintry wind blow the moment that Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden? The skirt made of a fig leaf that they put on was not enough to withstand the bitter wintry wind. Only if we don’t put on the bloody garment of Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross, it is cold no matter where we go, and there is no satisfaction. This indeed is the spiritual meaning why the Apostle Paul requested to bring his cloak.
II. Before the winter of life approaches, we must consume the Heavenly bread of the Word
Secondly, the Apostle Paul commands Timothy to bring the scrolls especially the parchments. Here, the “scrolls” refer to the Word of God or the Bible. Doesn’t this tell us to prepare for the Word and diligently consume it before the winter of life approaches us? We see from Deut 8:1-3 that God fed the Israelites with manna for 40 years during their wilderness journey. At the same time, God refers to the reason why He gave them manna as “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” This was confirmed once again by Jesus when he was tested by the Satan (Mt 4:4). Hence, we can say that those who do not consume the Word or not attend the Bible studies are encountering the bitter winter. Jesus personally spoke in Jn 6:35-58, “eat my flesh and drink my blood.” His flesh was indeed true food and his blood was indeed true drink. Thus, only those who consume Jesus Christ will live forever and be able to overcome the winter of life. It is because the Word that Jesus gave us is the Spirit and the Life (Jn 6:63). Jesus tells us to eat this heavenly bread with “Him and He will eat with us.” Thus, we must open our mouth wide and consume the Word of God that is written on the Book. That is why the Apostle Paul told Timothy to bring his scrolls, especially the parchments as he is faced with the winter of life.
III. Before the winter of life approaches, we must entrust everything to God
It is stated in the v11 of today’s Scripture text that those who accompanied the Apostle Paul in the beginning have left him and only Luke the physician is with him. However, in such confession of the Apostle Paul contains the deep truth that the winter of life or “aging” cannot be stopped by medical or pharmacological interventions. That is why Paul is entrusting everything to God and organizing his life before the winter approaches. Although Alexander the metalworker caused lots of harm to him, Paul entrusted that “judgment” for him only to God. This is the v14 of today’s Scripture text, “The Lord will repay him for what he has done.” Not only had he forgiven Mark who left him in Pamphylia, the Apostle Paul even said “he is helpful to me in my ministry.” Even though he went separate ways with Barnabas because of Mark, we can see the Apostle Paul forgave everyone as he entrusted everything to God before the winter approaches. As you can see, entrusting all burdens, worries and actions to God is the true attitude of the believers who are preparing for the winter of life (Ps 55:22, 37:5, 1Pet 5:7).
Conclusion:
Those of us who live in the nation with 4 vivid seasons have a diligent habit to prepare for upcoming winter. Likewise, through today’s message of the Apostle Paul, I sincerely hope that all of you will earnestly prepare not only the winter you can see, but also the winter of life that you cannot see with the Spiritual Word, the garment of righteousness, and also the attitude to entrust everything to God.
인생, 그 겨울이 다가오는데
“너는 어서 속히 내게로 오라”는 사도 바울의 간절한 요청은 믿음의 아들 디모데를 향한 사랑과 표현이며, 동시에 차가운 로마 옥중에서 인생의 겨울을 맞이하여 고독과 외로움에 젖어 있는 노사도의 고백이기도 합니다. 지금까지 함께 복음의 사역에 참여했던 수많은 사람은 하나둘씩 다 떠나 버리고 의사 누가만이 자리를 함께할 뿐입니다. 또, 믿음의 아들 디모데만이 스승의 신앙을 이어받아 헌신하고 있을 뿐입니다. 그래서 오늘 본문에서 사도 바울은 자신의 인생의 겨울을 목전에 두고, 그동안 함께했던 사람들과의 기억을 회상하면서 우리에게 인생의 겨울을 준비하는 자세를 말씀해 주고 있습니다.
1. 인생의 겨울이 오기 전에 ‘겉옷’을 준비해야 합니다.
사도 바울은 믿음의 아들 디모데에게 ‘겉옷’을 가져오라고 13절에 말씀하고 있습니다. 70이 넘은 노사도가 차가운 로마 옥중에서 얼마나 추위에 떨었으면 자신의 삶이 며칠 남지 않았음을 알면서도 겉옷을 가져오라고 했겠습니까? 그러나 영적인 의미로 볼 때, ‘겉옷’은 중요한 성경적 교훈을 알려 주고 있습니다. 롬 13:14을 보면, “오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고”라는 말씀이 나옵니다. 이 말씀은, 우리의 겉옷은 바로 예수 그리스도의 십자가에서 흘리신 피 묻은 옷임을 알려 주고 있습니다. 에덴동산에서도 아담과 하와가 범죄하였을 때 하나님은 양을 잡아서 그 가죽옷을 지어 입히셨다고 말씀하고 있습니다(창 3:21). 이는 장차 하나님께서 골고다 언덕에서 양을 잡아 가죽을 벗겨서 옷을 해 입히시는 구원의 역사를 예표해 주는 표지입니다.
사람이 떨게 되는 이유는 두 가지가 있습니다. 하나는 날씨가 춥고 먹지 못해서 떨게 되고, 또 하나는 죄로 인해서 떨게 됩니다. 아무리 따뜻한 날씨라 해도, 죄를 짓고 두려워 떠는 사람은 겨울을 만나고 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 그러한 사람들이 겨울을 이기는 것은 ‘회개’의 옷을 입는 것뿐입니다. 회개해서 어린양의 피 묻은 옷을 입어야 합니다. 예수님의 의의 옷, 세마포 옷을 입을 때 죄로 인한 심판의 겨울이 물러가는 것입니다. 그래서 계 19:7-8은 이 옷을 가리켜 ‘성도의 옳은 행실’이라 말씀하였습니다. 우리를 위해 십자가에서 속죄의 피를 흘려 주신 어린양의 가죽옷, 의의 옷을 입지 않으면 심판이 이미 우리 앞에 와 있는 것입니다. 에덴동산에서도 아담과 하와가 범죄하는 순간 차가운 겨울바람이 몰아닥치지 않았습니까? 그들이 만들어 입은 무화과 잎 치마로는 그 매서운 겨울바람을 이기지 못합니다. 오직 예수 그리스도의 십자가 피 묻은 옷을 입지 않으면, 어디에 가도 춥고 만족이 없는 것입니다. 이것이 바로 사도 바울이 겉옷을 가져오라고 한 영적인 의미입니다.
2. 인생의 겨울이 오기 전에 말씀의 양식을 먹어야 합니다
두 번째로, 사도 바울은 디모데에게 가죽 종이에 쓴 책을 가져오라고 명령합니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘책’은 바로 하나님의 말씀, 성경을 의미합니다. 이것은 우리에게 인생의 겨울이 오기 전에 말씀을 예비하고, 부지런히 먹어야 함을 알려 주는 말씀이 아니겠습니까?
신 8:1-3을 볼 때, 광야 40년 동안 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 만나를 먹이셨습니다. 그러시면서 이 만나를 주신 목적을 가리켜 “사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니라 하나님의 입으로 나오는 말씀으로 사는 줄을 너희로 알게 하려 하심이라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이것은 예수님께서도 마귀의 시험을 받으시면서 다시 한번 확증해 주신 내용입니다(마 4:4). 그러므로 말씀을 먹지 않은 분들, 성경공부를 하지 않은 성도들은 차가운 겨울을 만나고 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
요 6:35-58 말씀에서, 예수님께서는 친히 말씀하시기를 ‘내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시라’ 하셨습니다. 당신의 살이야말로 참된 양식이고, 당신의 피야말로 참된 음료였습니다. 그러므로 예수 그리스도를 먹는 사람만이 영원히 죽지 않고 인생의 겨울을 이길 수가 있는 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 주신 말씀이 영이요 생명이기 때문입니다(요 6:63). 이 생명의 양식을 ‘나와 더불어 먹자. 나는 너와 더불어 먹겠다’ 하십니다. 그러니 우리의 입을 크게 벌려, 책에 기록된 하나님의 말씀을 받아 먹어야만 하겠습니다. 그래서 사도 바울은 인생의 겨울을 앞두고 디모데에게 가죽 종이에 쓴 책, 성경을 가져오라고 한 것입니다.
3. 인생의 겨울이 오기 전에 하나님께 다 맡겨야 합니다.
초기에 사도 바울과 함께했던 사람들은 다 떠나고 지금은 의사 누가만 함께 있다고 본문 11절에 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러나 사도 바울의 이러한 고백에는, 의사나 약의 힘으로도 다가오는 인생의 겨울, 즉 늙는 것을 막지 못한다는 깊은 진리가 담겨 있습니다. 그래서 바울은 겨울이 오기 전에 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기면서 자신의 삶을 정리하고 있습니다. 구리 장색 알렉산더가 자신에게 많은 해를 끼쳤지만, 그에 대한 심판도 오직 하나님께만 맡겼습니다–“주께서 저의 행한 대로 저에게 갚으시리니.”–본문 14절의 말씀입니다. 밤빌리아에서 자신을 버리고 떠난 마가를 용서할 뿐 아니라 “저가 나의 일에 유익하니라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 마가 문제로 바나바와 심히 다투며 갈라지기까지 하였지만, 인생의 겨울이 오기 전에 다 하나님께 맡기고 용서하는 사도 바울의 모습을 발견할 수 있습니다. 이처럼 모든 짐, 염려, 행사를 하나님께 맡기는 것, 이것이 인생의 겨울을 맞이하는 성도의 참된 자세입니다(시 55:22, 37:5, 벧전 5:7).
결론:
4계절이 뚜렷한 우리나라 사람들은 겨울을 준비하는 부지런한 습관이 있습니다. 마찬가지로, 오늘 사도 바울의 말씀을 통해, 보이는 겨울뿐 아니라, 보이지 않는 인생의 겨울 또한 신령한 말씀과 의의 옷으로, 그리고 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기는 자세로 온전히 준비하는 성도님들이 되시기를 바랍니다.
