Yet Another Opportunity
An opportunity is something that does not come often, or it is always present. Hence, only a regret remains when an opportunity is missed. It is meaningless to kick yourself and say “oh, I should have done it…” after you miss an opportunity. According to today’s Scripture text, a man orders his vineyard worker to “cut down and throw it into the fire” a fig tree that cannot bear fruit even though he gave 3 years of grace and opportunity. This refers to a frightening judgment of God. However, with the earnest intercessory prayer of the vineyard worker, which signifies Intercessor Jesus Christ, we were granted yet another opportunity or year 2021. If so, what type of opportunity was granted to us?
I. It is an opportunity to repent.
We need to know that we are barely alive while God waits for our repentance. Hence, we must realize that anyone is at risk of being abandoned by God without repentance. The opportunity to repent will never come again if we miss it once. All we have left is judgment. Take a look at “Esau” in the Old Testament. He sold his birthright to his brother over a bowl of red stew. When he realized this later, he sought the blessing with tears but the Bible stated, “he could not change what he had done” (Heb 12:16-17). As you can see, the opportunity for repentance is very important. If there is a chance for any sinners to repent, there is hope. However, God will not grant any more opportunity to repent for those who do not repent after He reached His limit of patience. God will take away the opportunity to repent. Doesn’t this mean a judgment for sinners? This is the meaning of the message that said to cut down a fig tree that was not able to bear fruit even though an opportunity was given for 3 years. God has cut down the natural branches without mercy. Isn’t clearly stated in Rom 11:21? God is merciful, but He does not wait indefinitely for sinners who do not repent. He will give them many chances but will abandon them when they become stubborn. Like Prophet Elijah who in 1Ki 18:21 demanded the Israelites who wavered between God and Baal to make their choices, it is repentance to abandon Baal and return to God or to return to God’s bosom from the world. I sincerely hope that all of you will not miss the opportunity to repent in the time of grace but approach God’s throne of grace with confidence (Heb 4:16, 2Cor 6:1-2).
II. It is an opportunity to work.
It is stated in Ecc 3:1-6 that there is a time and a season for everything under the heavens. There is a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot. Hence, we have to work according to the given time. A work gives pleasure and reward to people. It gives knowledge and health. That is why true happiness comes from work. The value of a person does not depend on one’s social status or his level of income but depends on the sense of duty. There is happiness to believe that God has called and entrusted us with whatever the duty He had in mind and work diligently. That is why Luther and Calvin recognized their duty as religious reformer as God’s calling. All duties are the result of God’s calling and the responsibility. Thus, not only we should perform the duties of the world when we are able, we should also work diligently for the Lord. Prophet Jeremiah declares “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!” (Jer 48:10). Apostle Paul said in Rom 12:11, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” We cannot work if we are dead. There are times when we can do God’s work, and there are times we can’t even if we want to. An opportunity will come only when we are alive. We have to work only during the day when there is light (Jn 9:4). Here, the night refers to death, and the day refers to life. As we welcome this year of 2021, I sincerely hope that we will realize that God has granted us yet another opportunity to work and be faithful completely to fulfill whatever the duty that we were called for.
III. Let us use given opportunity wisely.
Apostle Paul urges us in Gal 5:13, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” This means to put the opportunity in good use when we receive God’s calling to do His work. Some people use their social status and opportunity to fulfill their desires. However, we the saints should love one another and serve our neighbors like the servants serve their masters when we were granted with the opportunity to work or the grace of calling.
Conclusion:
The focus of the “parable of a fig tree” is to produce fruits in keeping with repentance. God tries to find this fruit. In other words, God seeks repentance. Thus, this year where we were granted yet another chance, we should be worthy of the land in response to the Master’s reproach, “why should it use up the soil.” To God who has given us a year of grace period after 3 years, we must repay for the time. Moreover, as it is clearly revealed that it was a “fig tree” in v6 of today’s Scripture text, we must be worthy of the name of the duty that we were called for. An empty shell! There should not be an empty shell, where there is name but no fruit. Through today’s message, I sincerely hope that we will grasp onto yet another opportunity that we have been granted with and bear abundant fruit that God is pleased with.
또 한 번의 기회
기회란 자주 오는 것이 아니며, 또 늘 있는 것도 아닙니다. 그래서 기회를 놓치고 나면 후회만 남을 뿐입니다. 기회를 놓치고 나서 ‘…했어야 했는데…’ 하고 후회와 탄식을 하지만, 이미 소용없는 것입니다. 오늘 본문 말씀 볼 때, 3년이나 은혜의 기회를 주셨어도 열매 맺지 못하는 한 그루 무화과나무를 찍어 불에 던지라고 했습니다. 하나님의 무서운 심판을 가리킵니다. 그러나 중보자 예수 그리스도를 상징하는 과원지기의 간절한 중보기도로, 우리는 또 한 번의 기회, 올 2021년을 허락받은 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리에게 주어진 또 한 번의 이 기회는 어떠한 기회일까요?
1. 회개할 기회입니다.
하나님께서 우리의 회개를 기다리시는 동안에 우리는 겨우 살아 있음을 알아야 합니다. 그렇기 때문에, 누구든지 회개하지 않으면 하나님께 버림받을 위기에 처해 있다는 것을 깨달아야 합니다. 회개할 수 있을 때 회개할 기회를 붙잡지 못하면 그 기회는 다시 오지 않습니다. 남은 것은 오직 심판뿐입니다. 구약의 ‘에서’를 보십시오. 그는 동생에게 한 그릇 팥죽으로 장자의 명분을 팔았습니다. 나중에 이를 되돌리고자 눈물을 흘리며 간구했지만, 성경은 “회개할 기회를 얻지 못하였느니라”(히12:16-17)라고 말씀할 뿐입니다. 이처럼 회개의 기회는 대단히 중요합니다.
어떤 죄인들에게도 아직 회개할 기회가 남아 있다면 소망이 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 참으실 만큼 참으셨는데도 회개하지 않는 사람에게는 더 이상 회개의 기회를 주시지 않습니다. 회개의 기회를 거두어 가십니다. 이는 곧 죄인에 대한 심판을 의미하는 것이 아니겠습니까? 이것이 3년씩이나 기회를 줬는데도 열매 맺지 못했던 무화과나무를 찍어 버리라고 하는 말씀의 의미입니다.
하나님께서는 원가지들도 아낌없이 찍어 버리셨습니다. 롬 11:21에서 분명히 말씀하고 있지 않습니까? 하나님은 자비하시지만, 죄를 회개치 않는 자를 무한정 보고만 계시는 분은 아닙니다. 여러 번 기회를 주시지만, 끝까지 회개치 아니하면 찍어 버리십니다. 왕상 18:21에서, 엘리야 선지자가 이스라엘 백성에게 여호와 하나님과 바알 신, 둘 사이에 머뭇거리지 말고 선택과 결단을 요구하던 것처럼, 바알을 버리고 하나님께로 돌아오는 것, 세상을 버리고 아버지 품으로 돌아오는 것이 회개입니다. 은혜 받을 만한 때에, 회개할 기회가 주어졌을 때를 놓치지 말고 은혜의 보좌 앞으로 담대히 나아가시기 바랍니다(히 4:16, 고후 6:1-2).
2. 일할 수 있는 기회입니다.
전도서 3장 1-6절에, 천하에 범사가 기한이 있다고 합니다. 날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며, 심을 때가 있고 거둘 때가 있습니다. 그러므로 인생은 주어진 때를 따라 일을 해야만 합니다. 일은 사람에게 즐거움과 보람을 줍니다. 지식과 건강을 줍니다. 그래서 참행복은 일하는 데서 얻어지는 것입니다. 사람의 가치 또한 신분의 높고 낮음이나 보수의 많고 적음에 있는 것이 아니라, 자신의 일에 대한 사명감에 달려 있습니다. 무슨 일이든지 그 일을 위해 하나님께서 나를 부르셨고, 나에게 부탁하셨다는 것을 믿고 온 정성을 기울여 일하는 데에 인생의 행복이 있는 것입니다. 그래서 루터나 칼빈은 종교개혁자들은 직업을 하나님의 소명으로 인식했습니다. 모든 직업은 하나님께서 부르신 소명이요, 천직이라는 것입니다. 그러므로 세상 직장에서 일할 수 있을 때에 성심을 다해 일할 뿐 아니라 주의 일에도 열심을 내어야 합니다.
예레미야 선지자는 하나님의 일을 태만히 하는 자는 저주를 받는다고 선포하고 있습니다(렘 48:10). 사도 바울도 롬 12:11에 “부지런하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라” 하였습니다. 죽으면 일할 수 없습니다. 하나님의 일도 할 수 있는 때가 있고, 하고자 해도 할 수 없는 때가 옵니다. 오직 살아 있을 때만 기회가 있습니다. 빛이 있는 낮에 일해야 합니다(요 9:4). 여기서 밤은 죽음을, 낮은 살아 있는 생명의 때를 말합니다. 2021년을 맞이하면서 나에게 일을 하라고 또 한 번의 기회를 주셨음을 깨닫고, 무엇이든 죽도록 충성하는 한 해가 되시기를 바랍니다.
3. 주어진 기회를 선용합시다.
갈라디아서 5:13에서, “형제들아 너희가 자유를 위하여 부르심을 입었으나 그러나 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 살지 말고 오직 사랑으로 서로 종노릇하라”라는 사도 바울의 권면을 듣습니다. 이는 하나님께로 부르심을 받아 일할 기회가 왔을 때, 그 기회를 선용하라는 말입니다. 어떤 사람들은 자기의 지위와 기회를 이용해 자신의 욕심을 채우려 하기도 합니다. 그러나 믿는 성도들은 일할 수 있는 기회, 부르심의 은총의 기회가 주어졌을 때 더더욱 서로를 사랑으로 대하고, 종이 주인을 섬기듯 이웃을 섬기는 삶을 살아야 합니다.
결론:
무화과나무 비유의 초점은 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺는 데 있습니다. 하나님께서는 이 열매를 찾고자 하는 것입니다. 즉 회개를 찾으시는 하나님입니다. 그러므로 또 한 번의 기회를 허락받은 금년만은 “어찌 땅만 버리느냐” 하시는 주인의 책망 앞에 땅값을 해야 하겠습니다.
3년의 기간 후에 또다시 1년의 기회를 주신 하나님께, 시간에 대한 값을 해야만 하겠습니다. 또한, 본문 6절에 ‘무화과나무’라고 이름을 분명히 밝혔듯이 나에게 주신 사명의 이름에 걸맞은 값을 해야 합니다. 유명무실! 이름은 있는데 열매가 없으면 안 됩니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해, 바로 우리에게 허락하신 또 한 번의 기회를 붙잡아 기뻐하시는 열매를 풍성히 맺으시기를 바라겠습니다.
