Let Us Hold Unswervingly to the Hope and Move Onward to High Place
The hope of the saints is heaven or the kingdom of God. As the time flows and the world passes by, the saints’ hope for a new heaven and a new earth is eternal (Rev 21:5). Hence, in the New year, we should not be the ones who wander to seek the earthly things or the old things but be the ones who hold unswervingly to the hope we profess and set our minds on things above (Heb 10:23 Col 3:1-2).
I. We must set our hopes only on Jesus who is the Rock of Ages.
Ps 61 is a psalm written by David when he desperately pleaded for God’s guidance as he fled from his son Absalom’s revolt. In a desperate situation where he had no hope to live not even 1 %, David realized that he could not resolve on his own and pleaded to God with a mournful prayer “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Ps 61:2). The “high rock” here refers to Jesus Christ who is the Rock of Ages. Early in the wilderness journey in Rephidim, the thirst of two million people were resolved when Moses lifted his hands and struck the rock with the staff of God and the water flowed like a river (Exo 17:6, Ps78:16, 105:41); and Apostle Paul interpreted this rock as a spiritual rock or Jesus Christ, and the water from the rock was the Word that Jesus proclaimed (1Cor 10:4). Jesus is the Rock of Eternal Salvation, our fortress and our rock, in whom we take refuge, our shield, the horn of our salvation, and our stronghold (Ps 18:2). Hence, I would like all of you to believe that when we set our hopes only on Jesus who is the Way that lead us to heaven, unchanging truth and eternal life, we are most happy (Jn 14:6, 8:51, 11:24-25, Ps 146:5). Because we cannot grasp the days as Moses confessed (Ps 90), we have no choice but to send away the old year feeling sorry for not having satisfying memories. Even so, can we the saints be in despair and in self-relinquishment? The Book of Psalms does not record what God Himself said, but records the confession of faith of the saints. However, none of the Psalmists were in despair but their sufferings were all resolved when they cried out to God. I sincerely hope that all our problems will be resolved in 2021 by relying only on God like King David who prayed in desperation.
II. We must forget what is behind us and advance onward daily.
The prayer of David “lead me to the rock that is higher than I” and the lyrics of Hymn 543 “I’m pressing on the upward way” denote the incessant advancement of the saints. The Israelites after exodus never ceased to march for 40 years in the midst of the peaks of hardships. In the ecclesiastical history, the ministry of the proclamation of the gospel has never been suspended for 2,000 years. Likewise, I sincerely hope that we will persevere and advance onward until the end with a prayer like David, “lead me to Jesus who is the Rock of Ages” no matter what types of suffering, persecution may come our way or how painful threats of death may be this year. My beloved saints! God is standing and facing us on the rock, so we do not need to be afraid or worry if we only face God (Exo 17:6). Those who want to settle for reality without improvement as the time goes by will inevitably fall. Happiness will follow those who advance onward, but it will not follow those who are stagnant. One’s happiness is always on moving onward. Apostle Paul confessed, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me” (Php 3:12-14). Hence, the saints must abandon their old thoughts and old self and continue to move forward (Eph4:22). We must get rid of the old ways of thinking that we lived in habit. No matter how old the traditions are, I would like all of you to abandon them if they are inappropriate for the Word or the Will of God and return as a new self while you pray and move forward.
III. In order to move onward without interruption, we must strengthen ourselves with the power of God.
We cannot even make one step forward with our own efforts. Only when God provides us with new power and strength, we can utilize the unknown world of 2021 at our disposal. In order to obtain new power from God, we must first receive the Holy Spirit as Jesus commanded (Acts 1:8). On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven and came upon the 120 disciples like a wind and a sound and a fire like form, and they began to speak in other tongues (Acts 2:1-13). Moreover, when Peter the fisherman proclaimed the gospel as he was filled with the Holy Spirit, there was a miracle where thousands of people including many scholars surrendered (Acts 2-4). Second, we must be filled with the Word of God. The Early Church grew tremendously as they received the Bible Studies. As a result of their devotion to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship and prayer (Acts 2:42), the number of men who heard and believed the Word grew to about 5000 (Acts 4:4), and the Word of God spread and the number of disciples increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith (Acts 6:7). The Word of God continued to spread and flourish like a fire and grew in power (Acts 12:24, 19:20).
Conclusion:
No matter how much we improve and move forward, all is meaningless if we do not walk with Jesus. However, when we move onward in faith relentlessly day and night for the gospel of the Lord, Jesus will personally walk with us and grant us a new strength like an eagle to soar on wings through the storm even if we are greatly distressed (Isa 63:9). I sincerely hope that all of you will move onward with faith and become a victor.
소망을 굳게 붙잡고 저 높은 곳을 향하여 전진하자
성도의 소망은 천국, 곧 하나님의 나라입니다. 시간이 흐르고, 세상이 지나가도 성도의 새 하늘과 새 땅에 대한 소망은 영원한 것입니다(계 21:5). 그러므로 새해에는 옛것, 땅의 것을 찾아 헤매는 자가 아니라, 우리가 믿는 도리의 소망을 움직이지 말고 굳게 잡고 위엣 것을 생각해야 합니다(히 10:23, 골 3:1-2).
1. 만세 반석 되시는 예수님께만 소망을 두어야 합니다.
시 61편은 다윗이 아들 압살롬의 반란으로 피난을 간 절박한 상황에서 하나님의 인도하심을 호소하면서 지은 시입니다. 다윗은 살 소망이 단 1%도 없는 다급한 상황에서, 자기 힘으로는 도저히 해결할 수 없음을 깨닫고, “내 마음이 눌릴 때에 땅끝에서부터 주께 부르짖으오리니 나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서”(시 61:2)라는 애절한 기도로 하나님께 매달렸습니다. 여기 ‘높은 바위’는 만세 반석 되시는 예수님을 가리킵니다.
광야 생활 초기에 르비딤에서, 모세가 자기 손에 들린 하나님의 지팡이로 반석을 치자 생수가 강같이 흘러 200만 명의 갈증이 해결되었는데(출 17:6, 시 78:16, 105:41), 사도 바울은 이 반석을 신령한 반석 곧 그리스도로, 또 반석에서 나온 생수는 예수님께서 선포하시는 말씀으로 해석하였습니다(고전 10:4).
예수님은 영원한 구원의 반석이시요, 우리의 요새이시며, 피할 바위, 방패, 구원의 뿔, 산성이십니다(시 18:2). 그러므로 성도는 우리를 천국으로 인도하는 길이요, 변치 않는 진리요, 영원히 죽지 않는 생명이신 예수님께만 소망을 둘 때 가장 행복하다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다(요 14:6, 8:51, 11:24-25, 시 146:5).
모세의 고백대로(시 90편), 우리는 날을 붙잡을 수 없기에, 해마다 만족할 만한 추억을 간직하지 못한 채 또 아쉬운 마음으로 묵은해를 보낼 수밖에 없습니다. 그렇다고 해서 성도인 우리가 자포자기하고 낙망할 수 있습니까? 시편은 하나님께서 직접 말씀하신 내용이 아니라, 성도들의 신앙고백을 기록하고 있습니다. 그러나 시편 기자들 가운데 절망한 사람은 하나도 없으며, 비록 환난을 당하나 모두 하나님께 부르짖어 해결 받았습니다. 우리도 2021년에는 다윗 왕 같은 다급한 기도로 하나님만 의지하여 모든 문제를 해결 받는 역사가 있기를 바랍니다.
2. 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 날마다 전진(前進)해야 합니다.
“나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서” 하는 다윗의 기도와, “저 높은 곳을 향하여 날마다 나아갑니다” 하는 찬송가 543장의 가사는 성도의 끊임없는 전진을 의미합니다. 출애굽 한 이스라엘 백성은 40년 동안 고난의 절정에 부딪혀도 행군을 멈춘 적이 없습니다. 교회 역사에 있어 복음 전파 사역 역시 2천 년간 중단된 적이 없습니다.
마찬가지로, 오늘날 우리도 금년 한 해 어떠한 환란과 핍박, 아무리 괴롭고 죽음의 위협이 온다 할지라도, 다윗같이 ‘나를 만세 반석이신 예수님께 인도해 주십사’ 하는 기도로 끝까지 인내하며 전진하시기 바랍니다.
성도 여러분! 하나님께서 반석 위에서 우리를 대하여 서 계시니, 우리가 하나님만 마주 바라본다면 두려워하거나 걱정할 필요가 없습니다(출 17:6). 세월은 가는데 향상 없이 그대로 현실에 안주하려는 자는 몰락할 수밖에 없습니다.
전진하는 자에게는 행복이 따라오나, 걸음을 멈추는 곳에는 행복도 멈춰 버립니다. 인생의 행복은 항상 앞으로 나아가는 데에 있습니다. 사도 바울은 “뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 하나님이 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 좇아가노라”(빌3:12-14)라고 고백하였습니다.
그러므로 성도는 옛 생각, 옛사람을 버리고 계속 전진해야 합니다(엡 4:22). 습관 속에 살아온 옛날 사고방식을 버려야 합니다. 아무리 오래된 전통이라도, 말씀의 뜻에 합당치 않게 되었을 때 그것을 버리고, 다시 기도하는 가운데 새로운 모습으로 전진할 줄 아는 모두가 되기를 바랍니다.
3. 중단 없는 전진(前進)을 위해서는 하나님의 능력을 힘입어야 합니다.
사람의 노력으로는 단 일보(一步)도 전진할 수 없습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 새 힘과 능력을 공급해 주셔야만, 2021년이라는 가 보지 못한 미지의 세계를 능히 우리 마음대로 이용할 수 있는 것입니다.
하나님께 새 힘을 얻기 위해서는 첫째, 예수님의 명령대로 성령을 받아야 합니다(행 1:8). 오순절 날 성령이 바람같이, 소리와 불 같은 형체로 하늘로서 내려와 120문도에게 임하므로 그들이 세계의 각 나라 말을 하였습니다(행 2:1-13).
또한, 어부 출신인 베드로가 성령이 충만하여 복음을 전할 때, 많은 학자를 비롯한 수천 명의 사람이 굴복하는 역사가 일어났습니다(행 2-4장). 둘째, 하나님의 말씀으로 충만해야 합니다. 초대교회는 성경 공부를 통해 크게 부흥했습니다. 성도들이 사도의 가르침을 받아, 서로 교제하며 오로지 기도하기에 힘쓴 결과로(행 2:42), 말씀을 듣고 믿는 자가 남자만 5천 명이나 되었으며(행 4:4), 말씀이 점점 왕성하여 제자의 수가 더 심히 많아지고 제사장의 무리도 이 도에 복종하였습니다(행 6:7). 하나님의 말씀이 불길같이 타올라, 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻었습니다(행 12:24, 19:20).
결론:
이 세상 사람들에게 아무리 많은 문제가 쌓여 있을지라도, 문제 중의 문제는 죄의 문제, 사망의 문제입니다. “네 죄가 사함 받았다”, “네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다”–이것이 문제 해결의 현장에서 주님이 늘 말씀하셨던 표현입니다. 문제의 본질은 죄이고, 죄의 해결은 오직 믿음밖에 없음을 우리에게 알려 주시는 것이 아닙니까? 믿음과 기도—문제 해결의 두 가지 무기를 들고 오늘도 힘차게 전진하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
