A World Full of Problems
As 2020 comes to a close, when we look at our families, businesses, economy, politics, we can see that they’re full of problems. Even when we look on an individual level, when we see so many people sick, spiritually and/or physically, and not recover from it, isn’t this also a reality that is full of problems?
The Bible labels such generation as an ‘unbelieving and faithless generation’. It is a very suitable description of a world that is full of problems. Therefore, let us look at this generation’s problems and the solutions, revolving around today’s scripture.
I. The Identity of Impossibility and the Nature of Unbelief
The mute boy that had the spirit within him and all those gathered around him in today’s scripture were up against the proverbial large wall of ‘impossible’. The mute boy had a spirit in him, was suffering from epilepsy, and foamed at the mouth. All the while being the only son to his parents, being the sole target of all their love. What’s worse was that the boy started suffering all these things at a very young age, so they were at a point where their hope for his recovery was almost non-existent. With such impossibility before them, unbelief filled the hearts of not only the boy and his father, but also everybody that was gathered around them. So why were the boy’s father and the crowd facing up against the impossible, and bear the fruit of unbelief? In short, it was because they had no faith and were rebellious.
The identity of the impossibility of the boy’s parents, as well as the entire crowd, was the rebellious generation which was faithless and absent of the power of prayer. Furthermore, the boy was possessed by a spirit, so he could only move as the spirit controlled him.
The spirit, which serves as an agent of Satan, takes away all the possibilities of a man and puts them in despair. It inflicts distress and worries. Also, faithless unbelief brings about a perfect world, so that it snatches the saints’ sober mind, making them be aware of only the world. Take a look at the spirit that appears in today’s scripture. It tortured the boy, and tormented as well as snatched the sober minds of the parents and the crowd every time they saw the boy. Upon encountering Jesus, it even made the boy fall to the ground and threw him into a convulsion, to display its capabilities (Mk 9:20). The boy’s father and the entire household were “impossible” before the name of the spirit. It was the same with Jesus’ nine disciples. The entire crowd that was with the scribes were also “impossible” before the child. When Jesus came, they said, “Teacher, your disciples could not cast it out”, explaining the impossible. So the huge crowd that surrounded the boy (:14) was simply a curious mass. They were bystanders. They were just onlookers that heard the rumors of Jesus’ miracles and gathered. Without a sense of responsibility and duty, these people are like the reeds that move along wherever the wind or tide carries them. Therefore, wouldn’t that be a place that Satan governs, a place where only those who identify as “impossible” assemble?
II. The World of Faith, The True Nature of Possibility
Jesus, who went up against the world of impossible and the nature of unbelief! He is the LORD of faith, the author of faith. He is the one who makes all things possible, and who is capable of all things. So, there is no such thing as unbelief, concerns, and worries. It is a world in which all things, as He speaks, are fulfilled.
The LORD came to the site himself, saw the horrors of the impossible, and resolved the situation. What was the process of the solution?
First, the LORD, at the place of suffering, rebuked the boy’s father, who was in doubt, and yelled at the spirit. He rebuked regarding his unbelief, saying, “If You can?’ All things are possible for the one who believes”. Then He yelled at the spirit, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again!”. Although the entire crowd who faced the nature of impossibility was being controlled by unbelief and darkness, Jesus manifested the true nature of possibility by rebuking and reprimanding. Second, He held the boy’s hand and raised him up. The LORD’s hand, that personally stretched out to the boy to raise him up, is with us today. As a result, the boy recovered from his incurable illness and his health was restored. He held his fathers hands and embarked on a new life towards possibility. All this was possible through only Jesus. Does He not make our existence and our salvation possible?
Through the Holy Spirit, God has given us the power to make anything possible on this earth according to our desires. Whenever, wherever, whatever, the LORD has given us the hope and power of “I can do it”. Faith can resolve even the impossibility that may seem monumental. Did He not say that a faith the size of a mustard seed has the power to move a mountain? That faith is a faith of life, a practical faith, and a faith that has conviction.
Therefore, it is a faith that has no impossibility, a faith that is full of possibility. Such faith is a driving force of possibility. The disciples did have this kind of faith. So when they asked, “Why is it that we could not cast it out?”, Jesus rebuked their ‘prayer’ and ‘faith’. Jesus stated in the book of Matthew, “And He said to them, “Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith [a]the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you” (Matt 17:20) and also in the book of Mark, “And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.”” (Mk9:29).
Conclusion:
No matter how many problems the people of the world have, the problem of all problems is the problem of sin and of death. “Your sins have been forgiven”, “your faith has saved you” — the LORD always spoke these at the site of resolving problems. The essence of problem is sin, and the solution to sin can be achieved only by faith. Faith and prayer – I pray that that you may all be saints who powerfully march forward today with these two weapons of problem solving.
문제들이 충만한 세상
2020년 한 해를 마무리하는 시점에서 우리의 가정과 사업, 경제와 정치 현실을 바라볼 때 문제투성이임을 알 수 있습니다. 각자 개인을 되돌아볼 때도, 신앙적으로나 육신적으로 수많은 사람이 질병에 걸려 헤어나지 못하고 있음을 볼 때, 이 또한 문제들로 충만해 있는 현실이 아닙니까?
성경은 이러한 세대를 가리켜 ‘믿음이 없고 패역한 세대’라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 문제들이 충만한 세상의 실상을 가리키는 가장 적절한 표현입니다. 그러면 이 세대의 문제에 대한 실상과 그 해결책을 본문을 중심으로 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 불가능의 정체, 불신의 실상.
오늘 본문에 나오는 벙어리 귀신 들린 아이와 그를 바라보는 모든 무리는 커다란 불가능의 벽에 부닥쳐 있습니다. 벙어리 귀신이 들린 데다가 간질병까지 걸려, 아무 데서고 거품을 흘리며 거꾸러지는 아이–더구나 외아들로서 부모의 사랑을 독차지했던 존재입니다. 설상가상으로 아이의 병은 어릴 적부터 나타났던 것이기에, 회복에 대한 실낱같은 희망마저 아물거리는 형국입니다. 이런 불가능의 정체 앞에서, 소년의 아버지뿐 아니라 함께했던 모든 무리의 마음속에는 오직 ‘불신’만이 가득 차 있을 뿐입니다. 그러면 소년의 아버지나 모든 무리는 왜 이와 같은 불가능에 직면하였으며, 불신의 열매를 맺게 되었을까요? 한마디로, 믿음이 없고 패역했기 때문입니다.
아이의 부모나 함께했던 모든 무리의 불가능의 정체는 바로, 믿음이 없고 기도의 능력이 없는 패역한 세대, 그 자체였던 것입니다. 나아가 그 소년은 귀신에게 점령당해, 그가 조종하는 대로 움직일 수밖에 없는 존재였습니다.
귀신이란 마귀를 위하여 앞잡이 노릇을 하는 존재로서, 인간에게 모든 가능을 빼앗아 버리고 절망을 안겨 줍니다. 근심과 걱정을 안겨 줍니다. 또한, 믿지 못하는 불신앙이 충만한 세계를 가져다주며, 성도들의 맑은 정신을 빼앗아 오직 세상밖에 모르는 존재로 만들고 맙니다. 본문에 나오는 귀신을 보세요. 소년을 괴롭혔고, 부모나 동네 사람 모두가 볼 때마다 괴롭히고, 그들에게서 맑은 정신을 앗아갔습니다. 심지어 예수를 보더니 아이를 땅에 엎드러뜨리고 심한 경련을 일으키게 하며 실력행사를 하고 있지 않습니까(막 9:20)? 귀신의 이름 앞에 그 아버지도 불가능이고, 온 집안이 다 불가능입니다. 주님의 아홉 제자도 마찬가지입니다. 서기관들과 함께 있는 모든 무리가 다 아이 앞에서 불가능입니다. 예수님이 오셨을 때, “선생님, 당신의 제자가 능히 고치지 못합니다” 하며 불가능을 설명하고 있는 것입니다. 그러니 아이를 둘러싼 큰 무리(:14)는 그야말로 단순한 호기심의 군중입니다. 구경꾼들입니다. 예수의 기적의 소문을 듣고 모여든 방관자들일 뿐입니다. 어떤 책임감이나 사명감 없이 바람 따라, 시류 따라 움직이는 갈대와 같은 인생들입니다. 그러니 그곳은 사단들이 지배하는 세계요, 불가능의 정체들만이 모여 있는 곳이 아닙니까?
2. 믿음의 세계, 가능의 실체
불가능의 세계, 불신의 세력들과 맞닥뜨린 예수님! 그는 믿음의 주요, 믿음의 장본인입니다. 모든 것이 가능하며 모든 것에 능하신 분입니다. 그러니 어떠한 불신, 염려, 걱정이 있을 수가 없습니다. 말씀하시면 그대로 이루어지고 마는, 가능의 세계입니다.
주님께서는 직접 사건의 현장에 오셔서 불가능의 참상을 보시고, 이를 해결해 주셨습니다. 그 해결의 과정은 무엇일까요?
첫째로, 주님은 고통의 현장 앞에서 반신반의하는 아이의 아버지를 책망하시며, 귀신을 호통치셨습니다. “할 수 있거든이 무슨 말이냐 믿는 자에게는 능치 못할 일이 없느니라” 하시며 믿음 없음을 책망하셨습니다. 그리고는 귀신을 향하여 “벙어리 되고 귀먹은 귀신아 내가 네게 명하노니 그 아이에게서 나오고 다시 들어가지 말라” 호통치셨습니다. 모든 무리는 불가능의 실체 앞에 불신과 어둠으로 지배당하고 있었지만, 예수님께서는 책망과 호통으로 가능의 실체를 보여 주셨습니다. 둘째로, 아이의 손을 붙잡아 일으켜 주셨습니다. 그 아이에게 친히 손을 내밀어 붙잡아 일으켜 주신 주님의 손이 오늘 우리와 함께하시는 것입니다. 그 결과로 이제 그 아이는 질병에서 놓임을 받고 쇠약한 병에서 강건함을 입었습니다. 아버지의 손을 잡고 가능을 향하여 새 출발을 하게 되었습니다. 이 모든 것이 오직 주님에게만 가능한 역사입니다. 그분은 우리의 존재와 구원을 가능케 하신 분이 아닙니까?
성령을 통해서 이 땅에서 무엇이든지 원하는 대로 가능케 하는 능력을 주셨습니다. 언제, 어디서, 무엇을 하든지 주님은 우리에게 “할 수 있다”는 소망과 능력을 주시는 분입니다. 믿음은 어떠한 산더미 같은 불가능도 해결할 수 있습니다. 겨자씨만 한 믿음만 있어도 산을 옮길 수 있는 능력이 있다고 하지 않았습니까? 그 믿음은 생명의 믿음이요 실제적인 믿음이며, 확실한 내용이 있는 믿음입니다.
그러므로 못 할 것이 없는 믿음, 가능으로 충만한 믿음입니다. 이러한 믿음이야말로 가능의 감각이요 동력입니다. 제자들에게는 이러한 믿음이 없었던 것입니다. 그래서 “우리는 어찌하여 귀신을 쫓아내지 못하였나이까?” 묻는 제자들에게, 예수님은 ‘기도’와 ‘믿음’ 두 가지를 지적하셨습니다. 마태복음에서는 “너희 믿음이 적은 연고니라”(마 17:20)라고 하셨고, 마가복음에서는 “기도 외에는 다른 것으로는 이런 유가 나갈 수 없느니라”라고 말씀하셨던 것입니다(막 9:29).
결론:
이 세상 사람들에게 아무리 많은 문제가 쌓여 있을지라도, 문제 중의 문제는 죄의 문제, 사망의 문제입니다. “네 죄가 사함 받았다”, “네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다”–이것이 문제 해결의 현장에서 주님이 늘 말씀하셨던 표현입니다. 문제의 본질은 죄이고, 죄의 해결은 오직 믿음밖에 없음을 우리에게 알려 주시는 것이 아닙니까? 믿음과 기도—문제 해결의 두 가지 무기를 들고 오늘도 힘차게 전진하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
