To be Opened and to be Closed
Even though Zechariah was a righteous and a faithful person who observed all of the Lord’s commandments and decrees blamelessly, he had to live as a mute for 10 months due to his disbelief. God closed Zechariah’s lips when he did not respond with his faith when God sent His Word to him to “finalize” His Will through him. However, when Zechariah restored his faith, God reopened his lips.
I. To be closed
When Zechariah was serving as a priest, he was chosen by lot according to the custom of the priesthood to burn incense in the temple of the Lord. Suddenly, a messenger of God appeared before Zechariah and shared the news that his wife Elizabeth will bear him a son. However, Zechariah did not respond with joy and faith, but showed his disbelief by saying, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years” (Lk 1:18). The messenger of the Lord that told him of the good news was the Archangel Gabriel, one of seven archangels of God (Lk 1:19). God muted Zechariah who did not believe the Word spoken through Gabriel. My beloved saints! God the Creator has no impossibilities. He is Sovereign God that can kill or revive a person (1 Sam 2:6-8). To this God, Zechariah said “How can I be sure of this?” How? This is a frightening sin committed before God. The promise of God is “yes” in Christ (2 Cor 1:20). Tilting your head in doubt and wondering “why” should never occur. Zechariah used to be a righteous person whose faith was blameless before God (Lk 1:6), yet he did not respond with “Amen” and and instead, asked “how” with a “question mark” when the messenger of God obeyed the command and announced the good news. “How” is a question that demands proof. Zechariah’s question not only demanded “signs and clear evidence,” but at the same time, it originated from disbelief. For the salvation of mankind, God put a “period” with His Sovereign administration that “I will accomplish my Will through you,” but Zechariah removed this “period” and put a “question mark” in its place. My beloved saints! We must put a “period” with faith. If we add a “question mark” of disbelief like Zechariah, our lives will not be successful. Disbelief will close out everything. All sides will be closed for those who rejected the Word of God. Doubts will bring forth unnecessary pain.
II. To be opened
As it was announced by the angel, the wife of Zechariah conceived a baby and gave birth to a son when the time came. The relatives and the neighbors all rejoiced and went up on the 8th day of his birth to have him circumcised. So when the relatives wanted to name him after his father Zechariah, his wife Elizabeth said she would name him John. The people wanted to confirm with Zechariah. He requested a writing tablet and wrote “John” as it was announced by the angel. When God saw that, He was pleased and opened the lips of Zechariah that had been closed. When Zechariah named his son “John”, it meant that he accepted the Word of God. Zechariah removed the “question mark” and placed a “period” in its place. Until when do you think your lips will remain closed? Evangelism is the act of opening one’s lips. When we evangelize, things that were stagnant in the house will be opened. Inability to pray means that he is a mute. Just as the lid of a clay pot should be open to collect rain water, I would like all of you to remove the lids of disbelief and place an empty clay pot. The prayer to pray “Lord! Do as your wish” is the faith to open the lid of disbelief. I sincerely hope that we all put a “period”.
III. Zechariah praised when his closed lips were opened
Zechariah praised when his closed lips were opened. Praise is the proof of true faith. Praises must be sung with truly thankful hearts and joy. Are there any praises that you have “borrowed” from? Borrowed praises are the praises sung with empty hearts with lips merely moving to sing without knowing the meaning or content. The praises sung without knowing the meaning or the content are muted praises. Praise is an act of honoring and glorifying God with thanksgiving. Praise out of formality and hypocrisy is detestable before God. This was an incident that happened at one hotel casino in Macao. An young American man who seemed to be about 25 years old was gambling with an old man. A new game began and while the old man was passing out cards, this young man began to sing “One sweetly solemn thought” (Hymn 230) lyrics written by Phoebe Cary. He stopped passing out cards and looked at him with saddened eyes. This old man suddenly threw those cards on the floor and asked, “Where have you learned that song, young man?” This young man didn’t even realize that he sang. This old man said, “Very well, this was going to be my last game. This is it.” This old man returned all the money that he won from this young man. “Here, Harry, take this money and do something nice. I will do something nice with my money.” He walked down the stairs with this young man. This old man remembered learning this song on his mother’s lap and singing it in Sunday school, and this song awoke him with new faith while he conversed with this young man. This beautiful praise saved a wandering soul that was lost in the worldly lust. This is Rev. Cornell of the Philadelphia Baptist Church. My beloved saints! Praise must flow deep from within your heart like spring water.
Conclusion:
If you lived all your life as a “mute”, I sincerely hope that you completely repent and receive resolution. I sincerely bless everyone in the name of the Lord that all of you will place a “period” with the message you received today so that what was closed before will be opened and your lives will be successful.
닫히고 열리고
사가랴는 주의 계명과 규례대로 흠이 없이 행하던 의롭고 경건한 사람이었지만, 순간 말씀을 믿지 못해 10개월 동안 벙어리로 지내야 했습니다. 하나님은 사가랴에게 “내가 너를 통해서 끝을 맺어야겠다”고 마침표를 찍어서 말씀을 보내셨지만, 사가랴가 믿음으로 화답하지 못해서 열렸던 것이 다시 닫히고 말았습니다. 그러나 사가랴가 믿음을 회복하자 하나님은 다시 문을 열어 주셨습니다.
1. 닫히고
사가랴가 제사장 직무를 행하고 있을 때, 제사장의 전례를 따라 제비를 뽑아 주의 성소에 들어가 분향을 하게 되었습니다. 갑자기 주의 사자가 나타나 사가랴의 아내 엘리사벳이 사가랴에게 아들을 낳아 줄 것이라는 소식을 전해 주었습니다. 그러나 사가랴는 기뻐하며 믿음으로 화답하지 못하고 “내가 이것을 어떻게 알리요 내가 늙고 아내도 나이 많으니이다”라며 불신을 나타냈습니다(눅 1:18). 주의 사자는 기쁜 소식만을 전하는 하나님의 일급 천사장인 가브리엘이었습니다(눅 1:19). 하나님은 가브리엘이 전하는 하나님의 말씀을 믿지 못하는 사가랴를 벙어리 되게 하셨습니다. 성도 여러분, 창조주 하나님은 능치 못함이 없는 분이십니다. 임의로 죽이시고 살리시기도 하시는 주권적인 하나님입니다(삼상 2:6-8). 그러한 하나님 앞에서 “내가 이것을 어떻게 알리요”라고 했습니다. “어떻게?” 이것은 하나님 앞에서 무서운 죄입니다. 성도 여러분, 하나님은 약속은 그리스도 안에서 얼마든지 예가 되는 것입니다(고후 1:20). ‘고개를 갸우뚱 하면서 왜 그럴까?’ 그것은 있을 수 없습니다. 사가랴는 하나님 앞에서 신앙이 빈틈이나 흠이 없는 의인이었습니다(눅 1:6). 그런데 사가랴는 천사가 하나님의 명령을 받들고 말씀을 전할 때 “멘” 하지 못하고 “어떻게?”라고 물음표를 붙였습니다. “어떻게?”는 증거를 요구하는 질문입니다. 사가랴의 질문은 표적과 확증을 요구하는 질문인 동시에, 불신의 소치에서 나온 것입니다. 하나님께서는 인류의 구원을 위해서 주권적인 역사로 사가랴에게 “너를 통해 뜻을 이룩하겠다”고 마침표를 찍는 순간, 사가랴는 그 ‘마침표’를 떼어 내고 대신 그 자리에 ‘물음표’를 붙였습니다.
성도 여러분, 우리 모두는 믿음으로 마침표를 찍어야 합니다. 사가랴처럼 불신앙으로 물음표를 붙이면 생활이 형통하지 못합니다. 불신앙은 다 닫아 버리게 합니다. 하나님의 말씀을 거부한 사람은 사방이 꽉 막히게 합니다. 의심은 쓸데없는 고통을 안겨 줍니다.
2. 열리고
천사의 고지대로 사가랴의 아내는 수태하였고 때가 되니 아들을 낳았습니다. 이웃과 친족이 모두 함께 즐거워했으며, 낳은 지 8일이 되매 아이에게 할례를 행하러 올라갔습니다. 그래서 친족들이 아이 이름을 아버지 이름을 따서 사가랴로 짓겠다고 하자 사가랴의 아내인 엘리사벳은 ‘요한’이라고 할 것이라 합니다. 사람들은 사가랴에게 물어 보자고 하였습니다. 사가랴가 서판을 달라 하여 이름을 쓰는데, 천사가 전하여 준대로 ‘요한’이라고 썼습니다. 그것을 보시고 하나님이 기뻐하시면서 사가랴의 닫혔던 입을 열어 주셨습니다. 아들의 이름을 요한이라고 한 것은 하나님의 말씀을 시인한 것입니다. 사가랴는 물음표를 떼어 내고 마침표를 찍은 것입니다. 성도 여러분, 여러분들이 어느 때까지 입이 닫혀 있겠습니까? 전도는 입을 여는 생활입니다. 전도할 때 집안에 모든 막힌 것들이 다 열립니다. 기도 못 하는 것이 벙어리입니다. 항아리에 빗물을 받기 위해 뚜껑을 열어 놓듯이 불신의 뚜껑을 다 집어 던지고 빈 항아리로 놓기 바랍니다. “주여, 뜻대로 하옵소서”라고 올리는 기도는 불신의 뚜껑을 여는 믿음입니다. 그래서 사가랴처럼 마침표를 찍는 역사가 있기를 바랍니다.
3. 사가랴는 닫혔던 입이 열리자 찬송했습니다.
사가랴는 닫혔던 입이 열리자 찬송했습니다. 찬양은 진정한 믿음의 증거입니다. 찬송은 진심으로 감사하는 마음과 기쁨으로 해야 합니다. 성도 여러분, 빌려온 찬송은 없습니까? 평소에는 찬송하지 않다 남이 부르면 그때 생각나서 내용도 모르면서 입만 벌려 찬송하는 것은 빌려오는 찬송입니다. 내용과 뜻도 모르면서 부르는 찬송은 벙어리 찬송입니다. ‘찬송’은 하나님을 기리고, 하나님께 감사 영광 돌리는 것입니다. 형식적이고 외식적인 것은 하나님 앞에서 가증한 것입니다.
마카오의 한 호텔 도박장에서 있었던 일입니다. 25세 정도의 미국인 청년이 한 노인과 도박을 하고 있었습니다. 새로운 판이 시작되어 노인이 카드를 돌리는 동안 이 청년은 무심코 애절한 목소리로 피비 캐리의 ‘저 뵈는 본향집(찬 230장)’을 노래했습니다. 노인은 카드를 돌리던 손을 멈추고 침울한 표정으로 청년을 뚫어지게 바라보았습니다. 갑자기 노인은 카드를 마룻바닥에 집어 던졌습니다. “자네, 그 노래를 어디서 배웠나?” 청년은 자신이 노래를 불렀다는 사실을 모르는 듯했습니다. 그러자 노인은 “어쨌든 좋아. 이것이 마지막 도박이었어. 이것으로 끝이야”라고 말하며 청년에게 딴 돈을 돌려주었습니다. “자, 해리, 자네 돈일세. 받게나. 그리고 그 돈으로 착한 일을 하게. 나도 내 돈으로 착한 일을 하겠네.” 노인은 청년과 함께 계단을 내려갔습니다. 노인은 어린 시절 어머니의 무릎에서 배웠으며 주일학교에서 불렀던 그 노래를 기억하고 청년과 대화를 하면서 새로운 신앙적 각성을 일으켰던 것입니다. 아름다운 한 찬송이 방황하던 영혼을 방황과 쾌락에서 구원하였습니다. 그분이 바로 미국 필라델피아 침례교회 코넬 목사입니다. 성도 여러분, 찬송은 마음 깊은 데서 샘물 솟듯이 솟아나야 됩니다.
결론:
일평생 벙어리로 말 못 하고 살았다면 다 내어놓고 철두철미하게 회개하여 해결 받기 바랍니다. 오늘 주시는 말씀으로 마침표를 찍어 닫혔던 모든 삶이 만사형통으로 열리는 역사가 있기를 주의 이름으로 축원합니다.
