The Blessing of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is the climax of the love of the cross and it is God’s sole promulgation to sinners for their salvation. Hence, the religion of Christianity starts with the forgiveness of sins. It is Christianity and the cross-centered doctrine that bears the inevitable responsibility to forgive others. Thus, if there is a foremost virtue and emotion one can possess, the first would be gratitude, and the second one would be forgiving the mistakes of others. It is stated in today’s scripture text, God will not forgive us either if we do not forgive others’ mistakes. Therefore, forgiveness toward our enemies is the most important characteristic in Christianity and also the vivid evidence of Christianity.
I. The blessing of “overlooking” our sins.
God’s blessing of forgiveness towards us is a blessing of “overlooking.”
“Overlooking” is defined as:
1) not to consider too deeply and perceive as routine
2) leave aside
3) skim through, miss and skip.
As you can see, God forgave us by overlooking, skipping and skimming through our sins. When God overlooks our sins and enables us to feel the excitement of forgiveness, then the grace of forgiveness of sins will be upon us. Because we have sins that must be forgiven by God, we must understand the will of God to forgive the mistakes of our brethren in order for us to receive forgiveness. When such great joy, excitement and thanksgiving overpower us and overflow within us, we can then forgive others seventy-seven times.
II. The blessing of “remission”.
Remission refers to “writing off” one’s debt. We received the blessing of remission of sins from God. Today’s scripture is spoken in a parable in order to alert us with the punishment that we are faced with when we can not forgive the mistakes of our brethren. If we look at Mt 18:27 and on, we see a servant who had received the remission from the king, yet did not forgive his friend and actually punished him with evil vengeance. Why was this servant so stingy about remission? It is because this servant did not understand the love and thankfulness of remission that he received from the king. Furthermore, there was no gratitude and joy that he escaped the near death status. Apostle Paul said in Col 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” What it means is that we must forgive others just like Jesus forgave us. Jesus said, “If you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mk 11:25). What this means is that your prayers will be answered when you forgive others. However, we have no power to forgive others with our strength alone. It is only possible with strong work of love of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, we can forgive others when we are in Jesus Christ. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Eph 4:32). What this means is that only those who are in Christ will possess the loving heart of Christ and be able to forgive their brethren. Such people are the ones who obey the commandments of Christ (1Jn 3:23-24).
III. The blessing of compassion.
“Compassion” is defined as a “heart of feeling pity or empathy.” Without this heart of compassion, we cannot forgive others. “May your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need” (Ps 79:8). Like the confession of this Psalmist, this compassionate heart became a driving force for many signs and miracles, as well as forgiveness of sins. Jesus felt pity on the “great multitude” and healed the sick (Mt 14:14), and the resuscitation of Lazarus originated from the mercy of Jesus (Jn 11:33-35). The forgiveness for the Samaritan woman and the forgiveness of the sins of a woman who was caught committing adultery all started with the mercy of Jesus (Jn 8:1-11). As you can see, Jesus’ compassionate heart became the basic element for healing in life. It is destined to lead you to success in everything you do. We will receive the blessing where all of the chains of sins, conflicts, contradictions and the irrationality will be resolved. Then reconciliation, forgiveness and eternal love will be poured upon individual, household, and the church. We must not forget that the living water that flows deep from the heart of Jesus will soak the entire world and the waves of the river of love will always roll before us and refresh us. The servant whose debt has been written off symbolizes the believers. We cannot be the pitiful people who easily forget the grace of the master because of the greed for the resources and be punished. When we receive the grace of the Lord’s mercy, that mercy becomes the power to overcome judgment (Jas 2:13). Furthermore, when we taste the grace of mercy, we will receive the blessing of unlimited forgiveness, and all problems will be resolved as we receive the blessing of abundance in life. This is the blessing that is not accompanied by painful toils (Prov 10:22).
Conclusion:
“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart” (Mt 18:35). Like this scripture passage, we must forgive our brethren “from our hearts.” Now, the faith of the believers who received the blessing of God’s forgiveness must become “hotter.” When we have a burning faith such as the centurion and the king’s official, we can forgive others truly from the heart and practice the Word in our daily lives. I sincerely hope that all of you will receive and enjoy such blessing of forgiveness.
용서의 축복
용서는 십자가 사랑의 최고 절정이며, 죄인을 향한 하나님의 구원의 방법입니다. 그래서 기독교는 죄 용서로부터 출발하는 것입니다. 내가 용서를 구하고, 또 남을 용서해야 할 필연의 의무를 지니고 있는 것이 기독교이며, 십자가 중심의 진리입니다. 그렇기 때문에 사람이 가질 수 있는 최고의 미덕과 감정이 있다면 첫째는 감사, 둘째는 남의 잘못을 용서할 수 있는 사유(赦宥)의 감정입니다.
오늘 본문을 보면, 남의 과실을 용서치 아니하면 하나님께서도 우리를 용서하지 않으시겠다고 합니다. 따라서 원수 용서는 우리 기독교의 제일 중요한 특징이며, 기독교의 확실한 증거입니다.
1. 우리의 죄를 간과해 주시는 축복입니다.
우리를 향한 하나님의 용서의 축복은 ‘간과'(看過)해 주시는 축복입니다.
‘간과’는
1) ‘깊이 주의하지 않고 예사로 보기만 하고,
2) 내버려두며,
3) 대강으로 보아 빠뜨리고 넘어간다’는 뜻이 있습니다.
이와 같이 하나님께서 우리의 죄를 대강으로 보고 빠뜨리고 넘어가심으로 하나님은 우리를 용서해 주셨던 것입니다. 하나님께서 우리의 죄를 간과해 주셔서 우리가 사죄의 감격을 맛볼 때, 죄 용서의 은총이 임하게 되는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님 앞에 용서받아야 할 죄가 있기에, 우리의 죄를 용서받을 길은 같은 형제의 과실을 용서하는 것이라는 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫고, 먼저 하나님 앞에서 자신의 죄부터 용서를 받아야 합니다. 그 용서함을 받은 뜨거운 감격과 감사가 자신에게 넘쳐야만, 일흔 번씩 일곱 번이라도 남을 용서할 수 있는 것입니다.
2. 탕감해 주시는 축복입니다.
‘탕감'(蕩減)이란 ‘진 빚을 없는 것으로 여겨 주는 것’입니다. 우리는 하나님께 죄의 탕감의 축복을 받았습니다. 오늘 본문은, 형제의 과실을 용서해 주지 못했을 때 당하는 형벌이 무엇인지 말해 주기 위해 비유로 말씀하고 있는 내용입니다. 마 18:27 이하의 말씀을 보면, 왕으로부터 탕감의 축복을 받은 종이 자신에게 빚진 친구를 탕감해 주지 않고 악한 처벌로 대하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 종은 왜 이렇게 탕감에 인색했습니까?
이 종은 임금으로부터 탕감 받은 사랑과 고마움을 알지 못했기 때문입니다. 또한 죽을 수밖에 없었던 처지에서 살아나온 것에 감사와 감격이 전혀 없었기 때문입니다. 사도 바울은 골 3:13에서 “서로 용납하여 피차 용서하되 주께서 너희를 용서하신 것과 같이 너희도 그리하라”고 말씀하고 있습니다. ‘예수님이 우리를 용서하신 것처럼 너희도 그리하라’는 말씀입니다.
예수님도 “아무에게나 혐의가 있거든 용서하라 그리하여야 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지도 너희 허물을 사하여 주시리라”(막 11:25)고 하셨습니다. 이 말씀은, 기도할 때 남의 허물을 용서해 주어야 응답이 임한다는 뜻입니다. 그러나 우리 스스로의 힘으로는 남을 용서할 만한 능력이 없습니다. 오직 성령님의 강권적인 사랑의 역사로만 가능합니다.
또한 예수 그리스도 안에 있어야만 용서할 수 있습니다. “서로 인자하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라”(엡 4:32). 이는 곧 그리스도 안에 있는 자만이 그리스도와 같은 사랑의 마음을 가지고 형제에게 용서를 할 수 있음을 말씀해 주고 있습니다. 이러한 사람들이 그리스도의 계명을 지키는 사람들입니다(요일 3:23-24).
3. 긍휼의 축복입니다.
‘긍휼'(矜恤)이란 ‘가엾이 여기며 불쌍히 여기는 마음’을 뜻합니다. 이 긍휼의 마음이 없이는 남을 용서할 수 없습니다. “우리가 심히 천하게 되었사오니 주의 긍휼하심으로 속히 우리를 영접하소서”(시 79:8)–이러한 시편 기자의 고백 같은 긍휼의 마음이 수많은 기사이적과 죄 용서의 원동력이 되었습니다. 예수님께서 큰 무리를 ‘불쌍히 여기사’ 병인을 고쳐 주셨으며(마 14:14), 나사로의 소생도 예수님의 긍휼에서 시작되었습니다(요 11:33-35). 사마리아 여인의 용서받음도 예수님의 긍휼에서, 간음 중에 잡힌 여자의 사함 받음도 예수님의 긍휼에서 발동되었습니다(요 8:1-11).
이처럼 예수께서 불쌍히 여기심으로 삶이 근본적으로 치료됩니다. 범사가 잘되게 되어 있습니다. 죄와 갈등과 모순과 모든 부조리한 결박을 다 해소 받고, 화해와 용서와 영원한 사랑이 개인과 가정과 교회에 터지는 복을 받습니다. 예수님의 마음 깊은 데서 솟아나는 그 샘물이 전 세계를 적시고, 사랑의 강이 우리 앞에서 늘 출렁이며 시원하게 해 준다는 것을 잊어서는 안 됩니다.
탕감 받은 종은 바로 우리 성도들을 의미합니다. 주인의 긍휼의 은총을 물질의 탐욕 때문에 쉽게 잊어버리고 형벌 받는 불쌍한 자가 되어서는 안 됩니다. 주님의 긍휼의 은총을 받을 때, 그 긍휼은 심판을 이기는 능력이 됩니다(약 2:13). 또한 이러한 긍휼의 은총을 맛볼 때 무제한의 용서의 복을 받으며, 모든 문제가 깨끗이 해결되고, 삶에 풍부의 복을 받습니다. 복을 받되 근심을 겸하여 받지 않는 축복입니다(잠 10:22).
결론:
“너희가 각각 중심으로 형제를 용서하지 아니하면 내 천부께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라”(마 18:35). 이 말씀처럼 ‘중심으로’ 형제를 용서하지 않으면 안 됩니다. 이제 하나님의 용서의 축복을 받은 성도들은 믿음이 더욱 뜨거워져야만 하겠습니다. 백부장 같은 믿음, 왕의 신하와 같은 뜨거운 믿음을 가질 때 참중심으로 남을 용서하며 말씀을 실천할 수 있습니다. 이러한 용서의 축복을 받아 누리는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
