From the Commandments to the Cross
The Bible stated that the reason why God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses at Mt. Sinai was because He wanted His chosen people of Israel to obey them so that God’s unfulfilled Will that Adam and Eve the ancestors of mankind had already violated the Ten Commandments in the Garden of Eden even before they received them would be fulfilled. Before Jesus came, the Ten Commandments that made people to realize their sin has reigned, but it merely was a shadow before Jesus who came to this earth with the grace and power to forgive sin. The Bible clearly says that we are not justified by the works of the Law, but by faith in Jesus. Hence, today’s saints will be able to live when they shift their registry from the commandments to the Cross.
I. The Ten Commandments Adam and Even had violated
1. By choosing a new idol over God, Adam and Eve violated the 1st commandment. Sensually, they made their stomach their idol (Php 3:19) and ideally made devil their idol by defying God the Creator.
2. Adam and Eve received a commandment, “When you eat of it, you shall die,” but by despising and disobeying it, they violated the 2nd commandment (2Sam 12:9, Num 15:31, 2Chr 35:5-6).
3. Adam and Eve violated the 3rd commandment when they considered the traits of God such as righteousness, truth, power and authority as useless, violated the Holy Tree, and misused the Word to ruin His Divine Providence.
4. Adam and Eve violated the 4th commandment when they disobeyed the Sabbath and did not keep it holy yet still say they believe in God; so they were unable to receive the holy Sabbath given by God.
5. Adam and Eve were oblivious of their mutual responsibility as husband and wife. In essence, Eve made trouble when she did not consult her husband and Adam partook in sinfulness when he did not her to repent. Moreover, they violated the 5th commandment when they were even oblivious about their responsibility for their descendants when they did not honor Father God and got evicted from the land that God gave them
6. By disobeying the commandments, Adam and Eve violated the 6th commandment when Eve spiritually murdered her husband, and they murdered their own descendants (Rom 5:12).
7. Adam and Eve spiritually violated the 7th commandment when they endorsed themselves to the hands of luxury and sensation, and eventually committed a sin of infidelity toward Heavenly Father (Jer 3:14, 31:32, Isa 54:5).
8. Adam and Eve violated the 8th commandment when they stole from God and ate what is not theirs.
9. By deceiving God, angel and devil and lie about each other, Adam and Eve violated the 9th commandment.
10. Adam and Eve violated the 10th commandment when they were unsatisfied with what was entrusted to them, but kept greedy hearts and gave destruction to their own descendants (Rom 3:24-25, 6:23). As a result, they departed from God and disconnected themselves from the Tree of Life; and they reduced beautiful Paradise to hell when they lost the image of God.
II. God who wanted us to realize sin through commandment
God who gave commandments to Moses expected that the Israelites would realize the traits of sin that Adam and Eve, the ancestors of mankind had committed in the Garden of Eden and they would stand on the path to resolve those sins; however, the Israelites disappointed God as well. Furthermore, the Israelites who were nurtured with the Law for 4000 years, used that as a tool to judge others and were satisfied as a teacher to realize sin; so not only they did not come to the place where forgiveness of sins took place but judged with the law even Jesus who has the power to forgive sin, and crucified him on the cross.
III. We will be able to live when we move from the commandments to the Cross
The Bible adamantly states that the man can never obey all given commandments. The case of a rich young man that appeared in today’s Scripture text proves this. He came forward to Jesus to receive eternal life but he left Jesus because he was rather concerned by the Word of the Lord who presented the true commandments to receive eternal life (Jas 2:10). It is likewise for us today. Before Jesus came, we were the brides of the commandments, but now we need to realize that the status has changed (Rom 7:1-6). Our status has changed to brides of Cross who eat and drink the love and grace of the Lord (Mt 5:17-19, Gal 3:10). There is no man on this earth who can obey commandments. That is why the Lord gave himself as the culmination of the Law and embraced all about us within that love (Rom 10:4). Thus, because all of us who received the love of Jesus and believed him would be acknowledged as those who obeyed all the Law, we will not be able to live if we are not under the shadow of the Cross of the Lord.
Conclusion:
My beloved saints! There is a repented robber appear in Lk 23:39-43. He was a wicked person who committed despicable sin on the face of the earth. However, he met the Lord on the cross, believed him and accepted him in his heart so he was allowed to enter the glorious Paradise today. On the contrary, this rich young man was affluent, blameless and obeyed all the commandments but deviated from the final path of eternity and departed from the Lord while worried. Who would you say lived a better life? Today, we must fulfill the love of Jesus with all our strengths, reveal daily the proof as the one who moved from the commandments to the cross so that we stand on the same place as a repented robber (Mt 22:33-40 Jn 13:34-35).
계명에서 십자가로
하나님께서 모세에게 시내산에서 십계명을 주신 이유는, 인류의 시조 아담과 하와가 십계명을 받기 이전에 이미 에덴동산에서 십계명을 범했기 때문에, 선민 이스라엘 백성이 계명을 지켜 하나님의 무너진 뜻을 세우게 하려 하심에 있음을 성경은 말씀하십니다.
예수님이 오시기 전에는 죄를 깨닫게 하는 계명이 왕 노릇 했지만, 죄 사하는 권세를 가지고 은혜로 이 땅에 임하신 예수님 앞에서는 계명은 단지 그림자에 불과할 뿐입니다. 우리가 의롭게 되는 것은 율법의 행위로 말미암은 것이 아니라 예수를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암은 것임을 성경은 분명하게 말씀하십니다. 그러므로 오늘의 성도들은 모두 다 계명에서 십자가로 그 적(籍)을 옮겨야 살 수가 있는 것입니다.
1. 아담과 하와가 범한 십계명
1) 아담과 하와는 새 우상을 하나님 대신 선택함으로써 제1계명을 범하고 맙니다. 감각으로는 배를 우상으로 삼고(빌 3:19), 신념으로는 창조주를 거역하며 마귀를 우상으로 삼고 만 것입니다.
2) 아담과 하와는 ‘먹는 날에는 정녕 죽으리라’는 계명을 받았으나 이를 경멸하여 지키지 않음으로써 제2계명을 범하고 맙니다(삼하 12:9, 민 15:31, 대하 35:5-6).
3) 아담과 하와는 하나님의 속성인 공의와 진리, 권능 등을 헛되이 알고 거룩한 나무를 범하고, 그 말씀을 악용하여 하나님의 섭리를 그르침으로써 제3계명을 범하고 만 것입니다.
4) 아담과 하와는 안식일을 거역하여 거룩하게 지키지 않고, 그러면서도 자신들이 하나님을 섬긴다고 하여 그가 주신 거룩한 안식을 얻지 못함으로써 제4계명을 범하고 맙니다.
5) 아담과 하와는 남편과 아내로서의 상호 간의 의무를 망각했습니다. 즉, 하와는 남편에게 묻지 않고 일을 저질렀고, 아담은 그녀를 회개시키지 못하고 악에 동참하고 맙니다. 또한 아담과 하와는 그들의 후손에 대한 의무까지도 망각하여, 하나님 아버지를 공경하지 않아 그가 주신 땅에서 오래 살지 못하고 쫓겨남으로써 제5계명을 범하기에 이릅니다.
6) 아담과 하와는 계명을 어김으로, 하와는 신령적인 의미에서 남편을 죽였고, 그들은 그들의 후손을 죽이는 살인죄를 범함으로써 제6계명을 범하고 맙니다(롬 5:12).
7) 아담과 하와는 스스로를 사치와 감각에 내어 맡겨, 천부께 대해서는 영적으로 간음죄를 범함으로써 제7계명을 범하고 맙니다(렘 3:14, 31:32, 사 54:5).
8) 아담과 하와는 그들의 것이 아니고 하나님의 것을 도적질하여 따먹음으로써 제8계명을 범하고 맙니다.
9) 아담과 하와는 하나님께 대하여, 또한 천사, 마귀에 대해, 또 그들 상호 간에 거짓말을 함으로써 제9계명을 범하고 맙니다.
10) 아담과 하와는 그들에게 맡겨진 것으로 만족하지 못하고, 탐심을 품고 그들의 후손에게 멸망을 안겨 줌으로써 제10계명을 범하고 맙니다(롬 3:24-25, 6:23).
그 결과로, 이들은 하나님께로부터 떨어지고 생명나무에서 끊어졌으며, 하나님의 형상을 상실케 됨으로써 아름다운 낙원을 지옥으로 전락시키고 만 것입니다.
2. 계명을 통해 죄를 깨닫게 하시고자 하신 하나님
모세를 통해 십계명을 주신 하나님은 이스라엘 백성이, 에덴동산에서 인류의 조상 아담과 하와가 범한 죄의 속성을 깨달아, 그 죄를 해결할 수 있는 길에 서기를 기대하셨지만, 이스라엘 백성도 마찬가지로 하나님을 실망시켜 드리고 맙니다. 뿐만 아니라 4,000년간 율법으로 양육 받은 이스라엘 백성은 그 율법을 도구 삼아 오히려 사람들을 정죄하고 죄를 깨닫게 하는 선생 노릇으로 만족하여, 죄 사함을 받는 자리에까지 나오지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 죄 사하는 권세를 가지신 예수님마저 이 율법으로 판단하여 십자가에 내몰고 말았습니다.
3. 계명에서 십자가로 이사 가야 살 수 있습니다.
인류는 결코 주어진 계명 전부를 지킬 수 없음을 성경은 단언하십니다. 본문에서 부자 청년의 경우가 이를 증명해 줍니다. 영생을 얻고자 주 앞으로 달려 나오기는 했지만, 영생을 얻는 참계명을 제시하는 주의 말씀으로 오히려 근심하며 떠나고 만 것입니다(약 2:10). 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님 오시기 이전에는 우리도 계명의 신부들이었지만, 이제는 그 신분이 다름을 인식해야 합니다(롬 7:1-6). 주의 사랑과 은혜를 먹고 마시며 사는 십자가 신부가, 변한 우리의 신분인 것입니다(마 5:17-19, 갈 3:10).
계명을 지킬 수 있는 인간은 아무도 없습니다. 그래서 주님은 스스로를 율법의 마침으로 내어 주시고 그 사랑 안에서 우리의 모든 것을 다 품어 주신 것입니다(롬 10:4). 따라서 예수의 사랑을 받고 그를 믿는 자 모두가 율법을 다 행한 것으로 인정을 받게 되기에, 주의 십자가 그늘 아래로 이사 오지 않으면 살 수가 없는 것입니다.
결론:
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 눅 23:39-43에는 회개한 강도가 나옵니다. 그는 세상에서는 악한 죄를 저지른 나쁜 존재였습니다. 그러나 마지막에 십자가 상에서 주님을 만나, 주를 믿고 마음으로 영접하여 오늘의 영광과 낙원 입성을 허락받았습니다. 반면에, 부자 청년은 세상에서는 흠 없을 정도로 계명을 지키고 넉넉하게 살았지만 마지막 영생의 길에서는 이탈하여, 근심하며 주 앞에서 물러나고 말았습니다. 누가 나은 삶을 산 자라 할 수 있습니까? 오늘 우리도 힘을 다해 사랑을 실천함으로써, 계명에서 십자가로 그 적을 옮긴 자로서의 증거를 날마다 나타내며 회개한 강도와 같은 축복된 자리에 서야 합니다(마 22:33-40, 요 13:34-35).
