The Compassion of God
Through today’s scripture text, the writer of the Book of James encourages us to learn “suffering and endurance” or “patience” from the prophets of many generations and from Job. When we examine the life of Job in particular, we see that Job was faced with “agonizing and difficult conditions” that he himself referred to them as “battles.” He testified through Job 7 that his suffering caused him to toss and turn every night, his life was like a final respiration at deathbed, his heart ached and his spirit was exhausted. However, Job had hope in the midst of these difficulties and overcame them with patience when he looked upon the will and the blessing of God that He had in stored for him. If so, let us find out the secret how Job was able to overcome extreme tribulations and suffering.
If you are a Christian, there is no one who will not speak of the “compassion of God,” or God who has “everlasting mercy and compassion” or God’s “grace of His compassion” in one’s prayers or conversations. However, there are’t many people who know the true meaning of compassion. Of course, the dictionary defines compassion as a “feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another person who is stricken by a misfortune.” However, the grace of God’s compassion has following various meanings.
1) Have pity on a person who is under miserable circumstances and help him.
2) God’s overpowering love that is founded on His covenant (Rom 9:15-16)
3) God who loved us “first” that saves us through Jesus Christ (Eph 2:4, Tit 3:5-6)
4) God’s love toward a sinner (1Tim 1:13)
5) The grace of salvation through Jesus (Jam 5:11, 1Pet 1:3)
6) Life within the mercy of God (1Pet 2:10)
7) The fundamental principle of a life that the Lord teaches (Mt 5:7 Col 3:12)
I sincerely hope all of you to understand these various meanings of compassion and live within His compassion daily.
I. Those who received the blessing of God’s compassion.
How are the lives of those who received the blessing of compassion portrayed in the Bible? Those who are always alert, pray and prepare their faith with thankful hearts are those who are able to receive the blessing of compassion. Noah who was saved while the entire mankind was being destroyed is an example of such. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time who had faith to stay alert before God, so he received the blessing of compassion and was saved during the Great Flood. If the Last Days or the Days of Son of Man is like the Days of Noah, we must receive such compassion so that we can fulfill the Will of God by becoming the center of judgment. Such people are those who are always thankful for the grace and compassion they received. Those who are not rich toward God, their self-esteem is high and are rich toward themselves when they have a lot of possessions (Lk 12:21). God will give the ability to earn wealth to those who cling onto God and not rely on their riches because they realized the compassion of God is the compassion of the cross and the mercy of God (Deut 8:18). It is Abraham, Isaac and Solomon who acquired abundant wealth by the blessing of God’s compassion and lived within His compassion. From the confession of his servant Eliezer who said, “The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkey” (Gen 24:35), we know that Abraham acquired great wealth. For Abraham who left Ur of the Chaldeans alone, God allowed him a great ability to earn wealth in His blessing of grace. It is likewise with Isaac. God has compassion for those who deserved to receive His compassion, and Isaac was the one who received such compassion. It is written in Gen 26:12 that he reaped a 100-fold harvest when he sowed in the Land of Philistines. What is amazing is that he did not acquire this wealth in the time of great harvest but in the time of great famine. Hence, this harvest was not acquired by the power of man but was an outcome of God’s blessing of compassion. Furthermore, Solomon’s daily provision is written in 1Ki 4:22-23 as “thirty kors of fine flour and sixty kors of meal, 23ten fat oxen, twenty pasture-fed oxen, a hundred sheep besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl.” If God gave a great power earn wealth to Solomon who was living his life within the compassion of God so that he can live prosperous and abundantly, I sincerely hope that such grace of compassion will be upon those who are living within the compassion of God.
II. The attributes of the compassion of God.
God says in Rom 9:15-16, “I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” This denotes that this God has the Sovereign authority over compassion. Is so, what attributes does the compassion of God possess? First, the compassion of God existed from the beginning, existed eternally. The compassion of God does not happen all of a sudden, but it was there before the Creation (Ps 25:6). Second, the compassion of God is abundant (Eph 2:4). It is not barely enough to fill but abundant and overflowing compassion that is greater than all (Jn 10:29, Neh 9:31). Third, the compassion of God is like a blazing fire. It is not lukewarm or cold but hot like a blazing fire (Hos 11:8). Fourth, the compassion of God is infinite. I sincerely hope that all of you will petition to God whose compassion is infinite like it is stated “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail” (Lam 3:22). If so, what happens if we receive such compassion of God? First, it is stated that we will receive salvation. Our salvation is not something that we will receive by our actions or righteous deed, but will receive only through God’s compassion (Tit 3:5). Second, we will be able to receive the fundamental blessing to heal the illnesses and be spared from sorrow upon sorrow (Php 2:27). Even when we are stricken with an illness, we will be healed from the near-death circumstances and be spared from sorrow upon sorrow if God has compassion for us. Those who do not realize God’s such compassion for us cannot become true saints. We must receive infinite and everlasting compassion of God so that we can receive the blessing of salvation and healing.
Conclusion:
Do we have the blessing of God’s compassion in our life of faith? The Bible says that we will be able to completely devote ourselves to the work of God when we have the blessing of such compassion (Rom 12:1).Thus, we the saints must hope for the compassion of God. As it is written, “Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life” (Jude 1:21), we must look upon the hope and compassion of God in the Last Days. I sincerely hope that we will receive the ability to earn wealth without painful toil (Prov 10:22) and the resolution of all problems with the grace of our God’s compassion.
하나님의 긍휼
기독교인이라면, 대화에서나 기도하는 가운데 ‘자비와 긍휼이 한이 없으신 하나님’, 또는 ‘하나님의 긍휼의 은총’을 말하지 않는 사람이 없을 것입니다. 하지만 긍휼의 참뜻을 아는 사람은 많지 않습니다. 물론 사전적 의미에서 긍휼(矜恤)은 ‘가엾게 여겨 구제해 주는 은혜’를 말합니다. 하지만 하나님의 긍휼의 은총은 다음과 같이 다양한 뜻이 있습니다.
1) 비참한 상태에 있는 자를 불쌍히 여기시고 도와주심, 2) 언약에 기초한 하나님의 책임 있는 사랑(롬 9:15-16), 3) 예수 그리스도를 통하여 구원하시는 하나님의 ‘먼저 사랑'(엡 2:4, 딛 3:5-6), 4) 죄인을 향하신 하나님의 사랑(딤전 1:13), 5) 예수님을 통한 구원의 은총(약 5:11, 벧전 1:3), 6) 하나님의 긍휼 안의 삶(벧전 2:10), 7) 주님께서 가르쳐 주시는 삶의 원리(마 5:7, 골 3:12)입니다.
이와 같이 디양한 긍휼의 뜻을 깨달아, 날마다 하나님의 긍휼 속에서 살아가는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
1. 하나님의 긍휼의 축복을 받은 자.
성경을 볼 때, 긍휼의 축복을 받은 사람의 삶은 어떠합니까? 늘 깨어서 감사하는 마음으로 기도하고 준비하는 신앙인들이 바로 긍휼의 축복을 받을 수 있는 사람입니다. 전 인류가 멸절당하는 가운데서 구원함을 받은 노아가 바로 그런 사람이 되겠습니다. 그는 당세에 완전한 자요 의인으로, 늘 하나님께 깨어 있는 신앙을 가져서 긍휼의 축복을 받아, 홍수 심판 가운데서 구원함을 받았던 것입니다. 마지막 인자의 임함이 노아 때와 같다면, 우리도 노아와 같이 은혜와 긍휼을 받아야만 심판의 중심이 되어 하나님의 뜻을 이룰 수 있습니다. 그러한 자는 무엇보다도 받은바 은혜와 긍휼에 감사하는 자입니다. 감사하지 못하는 자는, 하나님께 부요치 못하는 자이기 때문에 자신의 소유의 많음을 보고 자긍하며 자기 자신에게 부요한 사람입니다(눅 12:21).
하나님의 긍휼은 십자가의 긍휼이요 하나님의 자비이기 때문에, 자신의 부요함을 의지하지 않고 하나님께 매달리는 자에게는 재물 얻는 능력을 주십니다(신 8:18). 하나님의 긍휼의 축복으로 말미암아 풍성한 재물을 얻어 하나님의 긍휼 속에서 살았던 사람이 아브라함과 이삭과 솔로몬입니다.
아브라함에게는, 그 종 엘리에셀이 “여호와께서 나의 주인에게 크게 복을 주어 창성케 하시되 우양과 은금과 노비와 약대와 나귀를 그에게 주셨다”(창 24:35)라고 고백한 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 혈혈단신으로 갈대아 우르를 떠난 그에게, 하나님께서는 긍휼의 축복 가운데 재물 얻는 큰 능력을 허락해 주셨던 것입니다.
이삭도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님은 긍휼히 여길 자를 긍휼히 여기시는데, 이삭이 바로 그러한 긍휼을 받아, 창 26:12 말씀을 볼 때, 블레셋 땅에서 농사를 지어 그해에 백 배나 되는 큰 수확을 얻었습니다. 그것도 풍년 가운데 얻은 백 배의 수확이 아니라 큰 흉년 가운데 얻은 수확이니, 이는 사람의 능력으로 얻는 수확이 아니라 바로 하나님의 긍휼의 축복의 결과인 것입니다.
나아가 솔로몬왕은 왕상 4:22-23을 볼 때, 하루의 식량이 “가는 밀가루 삼십 석이요 굵은 밀가루가 육십 석이요 살진 소가 열이요 초장의 소가 스물이요 양이 일백이며 그 외에 수사슴과 노루와 암사슴과 살진 새들”이었다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 하나님의 긍휼 가운데 살아가던 솔로몬왕에게 하나님께서 재물 얻는 큰 능력을 주셔서 이처럼 풍요롭고 넉넉한 은혜를 주셨다면, 이와 같은 긍휼의 축복이 하나님의 긍휼 가운데 살아가는 모든 성도님에게도 똑같이 임하기를 바랍니다.
2. 하나님의 긍휼의 속성.
롬 9:15-16을 보면, 하나님께서는 긍휼히 여길 자를 긍휼히 여기신다고 말씀하고 계십니다. 이 하나님은 긍휼의 주권을 지니신 하나님을 뜻합니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 긍휼에는 어떠한 속성이 있습니까?
첫째, 하나님의 긍휼은 영원부터 있었습니다. 즉 하나님의 긍휼은 갑자기 생기는 것이 아니라 우주 만물을 창조하시기 전부터 있었던 것입니다(시 25:6). 둘째, 하나님의 긍휼은 풍성합니다(엡 2:4). 겨우 채워 주시는 정도가 아니라, 만유보다 크신 풍성하고 큰 긍휼입니다(요 10:29, 느 9:31). 셋째, 하나님의 긍휼은 불붙는 듯합니다. 미지근하고 냉랭한 것이 아니라, 활활 불이 타오르듯 뜨거운 하나님의 긍휼입니다(호 11:8). 넷째, 하나님의 긍휼은 무한합니다. “여호와의 자비와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다”(애 3:22)라는 말씀처럼 긍휼이 무궁하신 하나님께 간구하는 성도님들이 되시기를 바랍니다.
그러면, 이러한 하나님의 긍휼을 받으면 어떻게 됩니까?
첫째, 구원을 받는다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 우리의 구원은 우리의 행한바 의로운 행위로 말미암는 것이 아니라, 오직 하나님의 긍휼하심을 좇아 얻게 되는 것입니다(딛 3:5). 둘째, 병을 고치는 근본의 축복과, 근심 위에 근심을 면케 하는 축복을 받게 됩니다(빌 2:27). 우리가 질병 가운데 있을지라도, 하나님께서 긍휼히 여겨 주실 때 병들어 죽게 된 지경에서 살아나고, 근심 위에 근심을 면하게 해 주시는 것입니다. 이러한 하나님이 긍휼을 모르는 자는 참성도가 될 수 없습니다. 영원부터 무궁하신 하나님의 긍휼을 받아, 구원과 치유의 축복을 받아야만 하겠습니다.
결론:
나의 신앙생활 가운데 하나님의 긍휼의 축복이 있습니까? 성경은 이러한 긍휼의 축복이 있어야만 하나님의 일에 온전히 헌신할 수 있다고 말씀하고 있습니다(롬 12:1). 그러므로 우리 성도는 하나님의 긍휼을 소망해야 합니다. “하나님의 사랑 안에서 자기를 지키며 영생에 이르도록 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 긍휼을 기다리라”(유 1:21)라는 말씀을 볼 때, 우리는 마지막 때 가져오실 하나님의 긍휼과 소망을 바라봐야 하겠습니다. 그 하나님의 긍휼의 은총 가운데, 근심 없는 재물의 축복(잠 10:22)과 문제 해결의 축복을 받는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
