Let Us Learn From Job's Perseverance and Have Confidence
Through today’s scripture text, the writer of the Book of James encourages us to learn “suffering and endurance” or “patience” from the prophets of many generations and from Job. When we examine the life of Job in particular, we see that Job was faced with “agonizing and difficult conditions” that he himself referred to them as “battles.” He testified through Job 7 that his suffering caused him to toss and turn every night, his life was like a final respiration at deathbed, his heart ached and his spirit was exhausted. However, Job had hope in the midst of these difficulties and overcame them with patience when he looked upon the Will and the blessing of God that He had in stored for him. If so, let us find out the secret how Job was able to overcome extreme tribulations and suffering.
I. Job realized that the Lord magnified him.
When God saw Job, He saw that Job realized the Providence of God that magnified him through these sufferings. When Abraham met God for the first time, he obeyed according to the direction of the Word when he had nothing. When he faithfully worshipped Him by building the altars before God while he proceeded and stopped according to the direction of the Word, not only He provided numerous descendants as many as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore through a man and his wife who was physiologically impossible to conceive, but gave abundant blessings as well. In Gen 24:35, his servant testified “The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.” Because God is great, He will magnify His children who completely believe Him, and fill them with abundant blessings. It is denoted in Tit 2:13 that God is “blessed and great.” This is what Job had realized. That is why Job testified in Job 7:17, “What is mankind that you make so much of them, that you give them so much attention.” When we look at Job’s present circumstances, it is nothing but despair, sadness and agony. Although it was difficult to even breathe, Job did not complain or grumble and was given with new strength and new hope when he realized that God magnified him. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing” (Gen 12:2)—How great Abraham had become as it is stated here? How great Job had become when he realized that God magnified him? Job who endured until the end without saying a word of grumble! Behind his endurance, Job saw and realized while praying that God was training him hard to utilize him greatly. The magnificent God whom Benaiah referred to David when he established Solomon as a king in 1Ki 1:37 where it says “May He be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!” is the One that desires to magnify His children who completely trust Him and fill them with abundant blessings.
II. Job realized that God placed him in His heart.
It is stated in Job 7:17, “What is mankind that you make so much of them, that you give them so much attention.” What this means is that God placed Job in His heart. That is why God had always stayed with Job, never left him alone wherever he went, walked with him and protected him. The heart of God toward Job was like that of a burning furnace, so He loved him with sincerity and considered him with burning passion. With this compassionate heart, God loved the saints who endured and served Him like Job. Hence, if we realize such love of God, we must be confident and hopeful no matter what types of tribulations and sufferings we may be faced with. Our hope can never become diseased or weakened. We must endure until the end with hope like it is stated in Ps 119:116, “Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.” The heart of God is the “accompanying” heart. God who never abandoned Job and stayed with His children, and God who was with David, the prophets of many generations, and Abraham was with Job and now promises to be with us. Job 7:18 where it says, “You examine them every morning and test them every moment” shows how much God loved Job and placed him in His heart. Here, “examine” means to counsel, to visit, to observe and to call on. It also denotes the love of God who “continually” (Isa 27:3), “anytime” (Jer 18:7-9) and “every moment” (Eze 26:16, 32:10) takes care of us. This signifies that God will always take care of us, watch over us and keep us in His attention and will never leave us. Job realized that God was involved in every aspects of his life including breathing and swallowing.
Conclusion:
How did Job change when he realized that God magnified him and put him in His heart and loved him? It said in Job 42:10, “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.” Job who used to confront his friends with words until the end without acknowledging his wrongdoing is now changed to a man who prays for them. This represents his mature faith that embraced everything with great love of God, and tolerated everything with great enduring heart founded on the experience and conviction for great love of God. If God really delighted in such image of Job that He took away all suffering from Job and gave him two-fold blessing, this is the reward from God given to those who persevere. I sincerely hope that we learn the patience from Job through today’s message and stand confidently on the firm foundation of faith.
욥의 인내를 배우고 확신을 가지자
야고보서 기자는 오늘 본문을 통해서 역대 선지자와 욥에게 ‘고난과 오래 참음’ 즉 인내를 배울 것을 권면하고 있습니다. 특별히 욥의 생을 살펴볼 때, 욥 자신도 ‘전쟁’을 만났다고 할 만큼 괴롭고 힘든 상황에 직면해 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 그의 고통은 밤이면 잠을 못 이뤄 새벽까지 뒤척이는 가운데 있으며, 그 생명은 운명 직전에 있는 한 숨결과 같고, 그의 마음은 아프고, 그의 영혼은 곤비하다고 욥 7장을 통해서 고백하고 있습니다. 하지만 욥은 이런 어려움 가운데서도 소망을 가지고, 하나님께서 자신을 향해 품고 계신 뜻과 축복을 바라보며 인내로 승리했던 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 그러면 욥은 어떻게 해서 극심한 환난과 고통을 이겨 낼 수 있었는지, 그 비결을 살펴보겠습니다.
1. 주께서 자신을 크게 여기시는 존재임을 욥은 깨달았습니다.
하나님께서 욥을 바라보실 때, 욥은 그 고통 가운데서도 자신을 크게 여기시는 하나님의 섭리를 깨달았음을 보셨습니다. 아브라함도 처음 하나님을 만났을 때, 아무 가진 것도 없이 말씀이 지시하는 대로 무작정 따라갔습니다. 말씀이 서라고 하면 서고, 가라고 하면 가는 가운데 늘 하나님 앞에 제단을 쌓는 예배 생활에 충실했을 때, 경수가 끊어진 그들 노부부를 통해 하늘의 별과 같고 바다의 모래와 같이 많은 자손을 주셨을 뿐 아니라, 범사에 하나님께서 복을 주셨던 것입니다. 창 24:35에서 그의 종이 고백하기를, “여호와께서 나의 주인에게 크게 복을 주어 창성케 하시되 우양과 은금과 노비와 약대와 나귀를 그에게 주셨다”라고 말하고 있습니다. 하나님이 크시기 때문에, 그를 온전히 믿는 당신의 자녀들도 크게 여기시고 크신 축복으로 채워 주심을 증거해 주고 있는 것입니다. 딛 2:13 말씀에도, 하나님은 ‘복스럽고 크신 하나님’으로 나타나 있습니다. 이 사실을 욥이 깨달은 것입니다. 그래서 욥 7:17 말씀에서, 욥은 “사람이 무엇이관대 주께서 크게 여기사”라고 고백하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
욥의 현재를 볼 때는 오직 절망과 슬픔과 괴로움! 숨조차 쉬기도 어렵지만, 하나님께서 자신을 크게 여기신다는 것을 깨달을 때, 불평불만하지 않고 새로운 힘과 소망이 솟아났던 것입니다. “내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대케 하리니 너는 복의 근원이 될지라!”(창 12:2)–이 말씀대로 아브라함이 얼마나 커졌습니까? 환난 가운데서도 크신 하나님이 자신을 크게 여기신다는 것을 깨달은 욥 또한 얼마나 커졌습니까? 끝까지 입을 벌려 원망하지 않고 참았던 욥! 그 이면에는, 하나님께서 자신을 더욱 크게 쓰시려고 연단하고 있다는 것을 욥이 기도하는 가운데 보고 깨달았던 것입니다.
솔로몬왕을 세울 때 브나야가 다윗왕에게 “여호와께서… 그 위를 다윗왕의 위보다 더 크게 하시기를 원하나이다”(왕상 1:37)라고 말하였던 크신 하나님, 그분은 범사에 욥이나 아브라함과 같이 당신을 온전히 믿는 자녀들을 크게 여기시고 크신 축복으로 채워 주시길 원하시는 분입니다.
2. 주께서 마음에 두시는 존재임을 욥이 깨달았습니다.
욥 7:17을 보면, “사람이 무엇이관대 주께서 크게 여기사 그에게 마음을 두시고”라는 말씀이 있습니다. 하나님께서 욥을 마음에 두셨다는 말씀입니다. 그렇기 때문에 하나님은 늘 욥과 함께 계시고, 욥이 어디를 가도 혼자 두지 아니하고 함께하시며 보호해주시는 것입니다. 욥을 향한 하나님의 마음은 뜨거운 풀무불과 같고, 간절한 마음으로 사랑하시고, 뜨거운 열정을 가지고 생각해 주셨던 것입니다.
하나님은 당신의 이 뜨거운 마음으로 욥과 같이 인내하며 하나님을 섬기는 성도들을 사랑해 주십니다. 그러므로 이러한 하나님의 사랑을 깨달았다면, 어떠한 환난과 고난의 처지에 있다 할지라도 소망이 든든해야 됩니다. 소망이 병들고 소망이 약하면 절대 안 됩니다. 시 119:116의 “주의 말씀대로 나를 붙들어 살게 하시고 내 소망이 부끄럽지 말게 하소서”라는 말씀과 같이, 끝까지 소망으로 인내해야 됩니다. 하나님의 마음은 또한 ‘함께하는 마음’입니다. 절대 욥을 버리지 않고 당신의 자녀들과 함께하시는 하나님, 다윗과 함께하시고 역대 선지자와 함께하시고 아브라함과 함께하셨던 하나님께서 욥과 함께하셨고, 우리와 함께하시겠다고 약속하시는 것입니다.
이러한 사랑의 하나님께서 얼마나 욥을 사랑하시고 그 마음에 두시는지, 욥 7:18 말씀을 볼 때, “아침마다 권징하시며 분초마다 시험하”신다고 하였습니다. ‘권징’한다는 말은 권고하시고, 방문하고, 참관하시고, 찾아가는 것을 말합니다. 또한 ‘때때로'(사 27:3), ‘언제든지(렘 18:7-9)’, ‘무시로'(겔 26:16, 32:10) 돌봐 주시는 하나님의 사랑을 말씀합니다. 이 말씀의 뜻은 항상 돌보아 주고 살펴 주며, 하나님의 관심에서 우리를 떠나지 아니하심을 의미합니다. 욥의 호흡도, 욥이 침 삼키는 것까지도 하나님이 간섭하신다는 것을 깨달았던 것입니다.
결론:
이처럼 하나님께서 자신을 크게 여기시고, 자신을 마음에 두시며 사랑하신다는 것을 깨달은 욥이 어떻게 변했습니까? 욥 42:10을 볼 때, “욥이 그 벗들을 위하여 빌매 여호와께서 욥의 곤경을 돌이키시고 욥에게 그 전 소유보다 갑절이나 주신지라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 자신의 잘못을 인정하지 않고 친구들과 끝까지 말로 대적하던 욥의 모습이 이제는 그들을 위해서 기도해 주는 사람으로 바뀐 것입니다. 이는 하나님의 크신 사랑에 대한 체험과 확신 가운데서 큰 인내의 마음으로 모든 것을 포용하고, 하나님의 크신 사랑으로 끌어안는 성숙한 신앙 인격을 대변해 주는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 욥의 그 모습이 너무 마음에 들어, 모든 곤경을 거두어 가시고 처음보다 갑절이나 많은 축복을 주셨다면, 이것이 바로 인내하는 자에게 주시는 하나님의 상급입니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해 욥의 인내를 배워, 굳건한 신앙의 터 위에 확고히 서는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다
