The Desire of God is for Us to be Holy
Throughout both Testaments, if there is something that God desires from us mankind, it is “holiness.” It is closely related with the Word, “Be holy because I am holy,” which is what He desires and also the Word of command for us. In order for us to be holy, we must properly learn the Word of God and stand firmly on the foundation of faith. Hence, when we become holy like God, we will be able to pass through the cherubim and flaming sword that guard the path leading to the Tree of Life and receive the blessing of consuming the fruits of the Tree of Life.
I. There will be a blessing of transfiguration when we reached the holiness of God .
It is stated in today’s scripture text, 1 Thes 4:3, and “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified.” It is grace that shows our holy God’s love for us mankind. When we receive such grace, we will be able to despise the sin and not walk on the path of arrogance so we will be transformed into those who will fight for the kind deeds with the weapons of Christ’s righteousness. Thus, if we become holy as the Holy One, our life will change. We will live a consecrated life, divided life where the unjust and the just, and the wickedness and the righteousness will divide.
1) The world of knowledge will be changed to the world of faith. Before we became holy, we used to enjoy judging others with the logics of the world and sat on the seat of God to judge others. However, when we receive the blessing of sanctification, such world of the worldly knowledge will be changed and will transform into the world of faith. While the world of faith is changed, the life that gives off foul odor of the world will be changed to the holy life that gives off the fragrance of Christ.
2) The world of theory will be changed to the world of obedience. We now can live a life to concur with the Word of God by saying “Amen” at all times. We will be able to live a life of obedience to seek only what is above while we putting the earthly nature to death (Col 3:1). It is likewise to the blessing that the disciples of Jesus received. When they cast the nets only by obeying the Word of Jesus, their boat was full of fish that almost tear the nets. When there is no obedience, it is empty net, but it becomes the blessing of full ship when there is obedience.
3) The world of doubt will be changed and will receive the conviction and reassurance. The past life like that of doubtful Thomas will now be changed to the faith of conviction to believe even without seeking. When that happens, we will be able to receive True Peace that Jesus gives so the anxious and worrisome world will be changed, and we will be able to enjoy True Peace.
II. The name of God, His will, His covenant, and His word are holy.
The dictionary defines “holy” as “sacred.” What this means is that when we are strengthened by the precious blood of Jesus Christ on the cross, we will become the one who are redeemed; and when we live a sacred life, we become ones that are holy. If so, what is holy to God?
1) The name of God is holy. It is stated in Ps 33:21, “In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.” Here, the Psalmist refers to the name of God as “holy name.” What it means is that the name of God is holy. That is why it is clearly stated in Ps 111:9, “He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever- holy and awesome is his name” to indicate the holiness of the name of God.
2) The Will of God is holy. When we see that “He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” (2 Tim 1:9), we know that we become holy because He called upon us with His holy Will. Because we receive such blessing, we can easily suffer for Christ (Php 1:29), and no matter what type of persecution and hardship may come to us, we will defeat them and overcome them without grumbling.
3) The Covenant of God is holy. It is stated in Lk 1:72, “to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant.” What this means is that as a result of God remembering such holy covenant that He made with the forefathers of faith such as Abraham, God gave blessings to us. Here, we can clearly understand the covenant of God is holy. Because it is holy, this covenant is “everlasting covenant” (Ps 105:10) and, it is a covenant that remains unchanged without shifting shadows (Jam 1:17). As you can see, the reason that the covenant of God is holy is because it is a covenant made with blood.
4) The Word of God of eternal life is holy. Prophet Jeremiah spoke of the blessing of the saints who are filled with grace through the holy Word of God in Jer 23:9. Apostle John said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (Jn 17:17), so when we accept the “holy truth” in our hearts, we can reach the holiness of God.
Conclusion:
Because we learned that the name of God, His Will, His Covenant and His Word are holy, we can reach the holiness of God when we praise His holy name, follow His Will and covenant and focus on the Word of eternal life. We must receive such blessing so that all our inner traits are changed and we will receive the blessing that the world of knowledge, theory and the doubt will be changed to the world of faith, obedience, conviction and reassurance.
하나님의 소원은 거룩이다
신구약 성경 전체를 볼 때 하나님께서 우리 인간에게 바라시는 소원이 있다면 그것은 ‘거룩’입니다. 즉 “내가 거룩하니 너희도 거룩하라”라는 말씀이 일관된 하나님의 소원이며 우리에게 명령하시는 말씀인 것입니다. 그렇게 되기 위해서는 무엇보다도 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 배우고, 확실한 믿음의 터 위에 서야 합니다. 그리하여 하나님과 같이 거룩에 이르게 될 때, 생명나무의 길을 지키는 그룹과 화염검을 통과하여 생명나무 열매를 따먹는 축복을 받게 되는 것입니다.
1. 하나님의 거룩에 이르게 될 때 변화의 축복이 있습니다.
본문 살전 4:3 말씀을 볼 때, “하나님의 뜻은 이것이니 너희의 거룩함이라” 하셨습니다. 거룩한 하나님께서 우리 인간에게 주신 사랑이 바로 은혜입니다. 이러한 은혜를 받을 때 죄를 싫어하게 되며, 허탄한 길 가기를 싫어하고, 오직 그리스도의 의의 병기로 선한 일을 위해 싸우는 사람으로 변화하여 가는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리도 거룩하신 자처럼 거룩해지면 생활이 달라집니다. 성별된 생활, 갈라지는 생활, 불의와 의, 악과 선이 갈라지는 삶을 살게 됩니다.
1) 지식의 세계가 달라져서 신앙의 세계로 변합니다.
우리가 거룩에 이르기 전에는 세상의 이치로 앞뒤를 따지기 좋아하고, 하나님의 자리에 앉아서 판단하기를 좋아했습니다. 그러나 거룩의 축복을 받게 되면, 그러한 세상 지식의 세계가 변해서 신앙의 세계로 바뀌게 됩니다. 믿음의 세계가 달라지는 가운데, 세상 악취를 풍기던 삶이 그리스도의 향기를 뿜어내는 거룩한 삶으로 바뀌게 되는 것입니다.
2) 이론의 세계가 달라져서 순종의 세계로 변합니다.
이제는 늘 하나님의 말씀에 “아멘” 하며 동의하는 삶을 살게 됩니다. 땅의 지체를 죽이는 가운데 오직 위엣 것을 찾는 순종의 삶을 살게 됩니다(골 3:1). 예수님의 제자들이 예수님의 말씀에 순종하여 그물을 던질 때, 그물이 찢어질 정도로 만선의 축복을 받은 것과 같은 이치입니다. 순종이 없을 때는 빈 그물이지만, 순종할 때는 만선의 축복이 되었습니다.
3) 의심의 세계가 달라져서 확신을 얻게 됩니다.
도마와 같이 의심하던 과거의 삶이, 이제는 보지 않고도 믿을 수 있을 정도로 확신의 신앙으로 바뀌게 됩니다. 그렇게 될 때 예수님께서 주시는 참된 평안을 받으므로, 조급하고 불안하던 세계가 달라져 참평안의 세계를 맛볼 수가 있는 것입니다.
2. 하나님의 이름과 뜻과 언약과 말씀이 거룩합니다.
‘거룩’이라는 말의 뜻은 ‘구별됐다’입니다. 즉 예수 그리스도의 십자가 피를 힘입어 속죄함 받은 자가 되고, 성별된 삶을 살 때 거룩한 자가 되는 것입니다. 그러면 무엇이 하나님께 거룩한 것이 됩니까?
1) 하나님의 이름이 거룩합니다.
시 33:21에 “우리 마음이 저를 즐거워함이여 우리가 그 성호를 의지한 연고로다” 하였습니다. 여기서 시편 기자는 하나님의 이름을 가리켜 ‘성호(聖號)’라 하고 있습니다. 즉 하나님의 이름이 거룩하다는 것입니다. 그래서 시 111:9에서는 “여호와께서 그 백성에게 구속을 베푸시며 그 언약을 영원히 세우셨으니 그 이름이 거룩하고 지존하시도다”라고 분명히 하나님의 이름의 거룩함을 말씀하고 있습니다.
2) 하나님의 뜻이 거룩합니다.
“하나님이 우리를 구원하사 거룩하신 부르심으로 부르심은 우리의 행위대로 하심이 아니요 오직 자기 뜻과 영원한 때 전부터 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 하심이라”(딤후 1:9)라는 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님의 거룩하신 뜻으로 말미암아 우리들이 거룩하신 부르심으로 부르심을 입게 된 것입니다. 이러한 축복을 받았기 때문에 우리는 그리스도를 위하여 고난도 달게 받을 수 있고(빌 1:29), 어떤 환난이나 핍박이 올지라도 원망하지 않고 승리할 수 있는 것입니다.
3) 하나님의 언약이 거룩합니다.
눅 1:72에서 “우리 조상을 긍휼히 여기시며 그 거룩한 언약을 기억하셨으니”라는 말씀을 볼 수 있습니다. 이는 하나님께서 아브라함과 같이 믿음의 선진들과 맺은 거룩한 언약을 기억하신 결과로 우리에게도 복을 주셨다는 것입니다. 여기서도 분명히 우리는 하나님의 언약이 거룩한 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 거룩하기 때문에 그 언약은 ‘영영한 언약’이며(시 105:10), 변함도 없고 회전하는 그림자도 없는 언약입니다(약 1:17). 이처럼 하나님의 언약이 거룩한 것은 그것이 피로 맺은 언약이기 때문입니다.
4) 하나님의 영생의 말씀이 거룩합니다.
예레미야 선지자는, 하나님의 거룩한 말씀을 인하여 은혜가 충만케 된 성도의 축복에 대해서 렘 23:9에 말씀하고 있습니다. 사도 요한도 “저희를 진리로 거룩하게 하옵소서 아버지의 말씀은 진리니이다”(요 17:17)라고 말씀하고 있으니, ‘거룩한 진리’를 각자 내 마음에 모실 때 우리도 하나님의 거룩에 이르게 되는 것입니다.
결론:
하나님의 이름과 뜻과 언약과 말씀이 거룩하다고 하셨으니, 그 거룩하신 성호를 찬양하며 하나님의 뜻과 언약을 좇고 영생의 말씀에 심취할 때, 우리 또한 하나님의 거룩에 이를 수 있습니다. 그러한 축복을 받아야만 모든 속성이 변하여, 지식과 이론과 의심의 세계가 신앙과 순종과 확신으로 바뀌는 변화의 축복을 받게 됩니다.
