My Name is in the Book of Life
Philippians 1:1-12, 4:1-3 Revelation 20:12-15
Because our names will be thrown into the lake of fire if our names are not found written in the Book of Life, there is no greater blessing than having our name written in it. Thus, as Apostle Paul spoke in today’s scripture text, Php 4, those believers whose names are found written in the Book of Life are the happiest ones. If so, through the message of faithful obedience of the members of church in Philippi, and love and commitment that Apostle Paul as a true shepherd pour upon them until their names were found written in the Book of Life, I sincerely hope that we receive abundant grace that our individual name too will be found written in the Book of Life.
I. To those whose name is written in the Book of Life, there is an individual crown.
When our names are written in the Book of Life, it means that there is a crown that God has prepared for us. Just like there are different types of medals in the athletic games depending on the results, the Bible says that God will give various crowns to us according to our own level of faith. First, it is said in Jam 1:12 God will give the “crown of life” that He promised to those who persevered through the trials and were acknowledged as righteous. Furthermore, it is said in 1 Pet 5:4 that He will give the “crown of glory,” and 1 Thes 2:19 talks about the “crown of pride.” Also, the “crown of righteousness” was discussed in 2 Tim 4:8. This crown of righteousness is awarded to those who fight the good fight and finishes the race that was assigned to them and kept their faith. In short, it refers to those who defeat the wickedness with the kindness. This crown can only be awarded to those who received the love and the power of Jesus who defeated all the wickedness with the kindness by pleading for forgiveness until the end, during the final moment of his crucifixion on the cross. Furthermore, it is stated in Prov 12:4, “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,” and 1 Cor 9:25 spoke about a “crown that will not last.” Hence, the crown that we will receive must be the crown that will last forever and will neither perish nor fade away. Lastly, it is said in Isa 28:5 that God Himself will be the “glorious crown” and a beautiful wreath to the remnants of His people. If so, we should receive and enjoy the crown that is already prepared for us by enduring until the end like it is stated in Mt 24:13.
II. In order to be written in the Book of Life, there must be true love and obedience.
Through the relationship between Apostle Paul who is a true shepherd and the members of the church in Philippi, the true lamb, we can understand the secret behind how the names of the members of the church in Philippi were written in the Book of Life. It is because Apostle Paul who is a true shepherd dedicated his life with such devotion and commitment for his ministry so that the names of the members of the church in Philippi will be written in the Book of Life. This shows the love and the commitment for his people and the attitude as the leader like the pleading of Moses who said, “Please forgive their sin–but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written” in Exo 32:32. The members who are the true lamb also followed the words of the shepherd with absolute obedience. When Euodia and Syntyche disagreed and turned their backs against each other, they obeyed and became one when they read the letter of encouragement of Apostle Paul who pleaded with them “to be of the same mind in the Lord.” Also, there were many members of the church who carried the burdens and yokes with Apostle Paul and worked diligently for the gospel. Not only that, when the members of the church in Philippi realized that Apostle Paul went to prison because of them, they gathered offering while giving thanks to God during their times of hardship in life and gave to Apostle Paul via Epaphroditus, and this also became “fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing” to God as well (Php 4:10-18). As you can see, because there were the members of the church in Phillip who obeyed the direction of the man of God and carried the burdens with him for the gospel, Apostle Paul referred to them as “whom I love and long for, my joy and crown” (Php 4:1).
III. We must rejoice at the fact that our names are written in the Book of Life.
It is said in Lk 10:17-20 that Jesus said to the 70 members who returned to him with joy after performing the signs and miracles in the name of Jesus, “do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” Therefore, we the believers should not be delighted with anything else but believe and rejoice in the fact that our names are written in the Book of Life. Apostle Paul substituted this fact with “our citizenship is in heaven” (Php 3:20). Therefore, we are the citizens of heaven who possess the Certificate of Citizenship that was personally awarded by God, and He Himself is the King of that Kingdom. The fact that our names are written in the Book of Life, means that we put on the “garment of salvation” and enter the “order of mercy.” The Psalmist confessed in Ps 139:16, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Through this fact, I would like all of you to believe that your name is already written in the Book of Life and be delighted.
Conclusion:
When Apostle Paul nurtured the members of the church in Philippi, he nurtured then with true love, the power of the Word and tears. Hence, when he saw their names were already written in the Book of Life, he rejoiced and gave thanks. If so, we must become the fruits of joy that answers to the Word of God with obedience and commitment like the members of the Church in Philippi.

생명책에 우리의 이름이 기록되지 못하면 불 못에 던짐을 당하기 때문에, 생명책에 내 이름이 있다는 것만큼 큰 축복은 없습니다. 그러므로 오늘 본문 빌립보서 4장에서 사도 바울이 말씀하고 있는바 생명책에 그 이름이 기록된 성도들은 가장 행복한 자들입니다. 그렇다면 빌립보 교인들의 이름이 생명책에 기록되기까지 사도 바울이 참목자로서 그들에게 쏟은 사랑과 헌신, 그리고 빌립보 교인들의 믿음의 순종의 모습을 통해, 우리 각자의 이름도 생명책에 기록될 수 있는 큰 은혜를 받기를 바랍니다.
1. 생명책에 이름이 기록된 자는 각자의 면류관이 있습니다.
생명책에 우리의 이름이 기록되었다는 것은 우리에게 하나님께서 주시려고 예비하신 면류관이 있다는 것입니다. 운동 경기에서도 경기 결과에 따라 다른 메달이 있듯이, 성도들 또한 각자의 믿음에 따라 하나님께서 다양한 면류관을 우리에게 주신다고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다.
먼저 약 1:12에서는, 시험을 참아 옳다 인정하심을 받은 자에게는 약속하신 ‘생명의 면류관’을 주시겠다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 또한 벧전 5:4에서는 ‘영광의 면류관’을 주시겠다고 말씀하고 있으며, 살전 2:19에는 ‘자랑의 면류관’에 대해서 말씀하고 있습니다. 또한 딤후 4:8에서는 ‘의의 면류관’에 대해서 말씀하고 있습니다. 이 ‘의의 면류관’은 선한 싸움을 싸우고 자기에게 주어진 달려갈 길을 다 마치고 믿음을 지킨 자들에게 주어지는 면류관입니다. 한마디로 선으로 악을 이긴 사람을 뜻합니다. 이는 십자가 상에서 마지막 죽는 순간에도 끝까지 용서를 간구함으로써 선으로 모든 악과 싸워 승리하신 예수님의 사랑과 능력을 받은 자들만이 얻을 수 있는 면류관입니다.
또한 잠 12:4에는 ‘어진 여인은 남편의 면류관’이라고 했으며, 고전 9:25에서는 ‘썩을 면류관’에 대해서 말씀하고 있으니 우리가 받을 면류관은 썩지 않고 쇠하지 않는 영원한 면류관이 되어야겠습니다. 끝으로, 사 28:5은 남은 백성에게는 하나님께서 친히 ‘영화로운 면류관’이 되시며 아름다운 화관이 되실 것이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 마 24:13 말씀대로 끝까지 견딤으로 예비된 면류관을 받아 누리는 역사가 있어야겠습니다.
2. 생명책에 기록되기 위해서는 참된 사랑과 순종이 있어야 합니다.
우리는 참목자인 사도 바울과 참양 된 빌립보 교인들 간의 관계를 통해서 빌립보 교인들의 이름이 생명책에 기록된 비결을 알 수 있습니다. 그것은 참목자 된 사도 바울이 빌립보 교인들의 이름이 생명책에 기록될 수 있도록 생명을 바쳐 목회했기 때문입니다. 이는 “이제 그들의 죄를 사하시옵소서 그렇지 않사오면 원컨대 주의 기록하신 책에서 내 이름을 지워 버려 주옵소서”(출 32:32)라고 하나님께 호소했던 모세와 같이, 자기 백성에 대한 사랑과 헌신의 자세를 말씀하고 있습니다.
교인들 또한 참양 된 자로서 목자의 말에 절대적으로 순종했습니다. 유오디아와 순두게가 피차에 다투고 등지고 살았으나, “주 안에서 같은 마음을 품으라” 하는 바울의 권면의 편지를 보고 순종하여 하나가 되는 순종이 있었습니다. 또한 사도 바울과 함께 멍에를 메고 복음을 위해 힘쓰는 교인들이 있었습니다.
뿐만 아니라, 빌립보 교인들은 사도 바울이 감옥에 갇히게 된 것이 바로 자신들 때문임을 깨닫고, 어려운 생활 가운데 십시일반으로 하나님께 감사하면서 정성스럽게 예물을 모아 에바브로디도 편에 바울에게 전달하였고, 이것이 또한 사도 바울뿐 아니라 하나님께 향기로운 제물이 되었다고 말씀하고 있습니다 (빌 4:10-18). 이처럼 하나님의 사람의 말씀에 순종하고, 그분과 함께 복음을 위해 같은 멍에를 메며 힘쓰는 교인들이 바로 빌립보 교인들이었기에, 사도 바울은 그들을 가리켜 “나의 기쁨이요 면류관인 사랑하는 자들”이라고 불렀던 것입니다 (빌 4:1).
3. 생명책에 내 이름이 기록된 것으로 기뻐하는 삶을 살아야 합니다.
눅 10:17-20 말씀에서, 예수님은 주의 이름으로 기사이적을 행한 후 기뻐하며 돌아와서 보고하는 70문도에게 “귀신들이 너희에게 항복하는 것으로 기뻐하지 말고 너희 이름이 하늘에 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러므로 성도는 그 어떠한 것으로든 기뻐할 것이 아니라, 오직 내 이름이 생명책에 기록된 것을 믿고 그것으로 인해 기뻐하는 삶을 살아야 합니다.
사도 바울은 이 사실을 “우리의 시민권이 하늘에 있다”(빌 3:20)라는 말씀으로 대신하고 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님께서 직접 부여하신 하늘나라 시민권을 가진 자이며, 하나님이 바로 그 나라의 주인이십니다. 우리의 이름이 생명책에 기록됐다는 것은 “구원의 옷을 입고 긍휼의 반열에 섰다”는 것을 의미합니다. 시편 기자는 시 139:16에 “내 형질이 이루기 전에 주의 눈이 보셨으며 나를 위하여 정한 날이 하나도 되기 전에 주의 책에 다 기록이 되었나이다”라고 고백하고 있습니다. 이 사실을 통해 이미 내 이름이 생명책에 기록된 것으로 믿고 기뻐하는 삶을 사는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
결론:
사도 바울은 빌립보 교인들을 양육하되 참사랑과 말씀의 능력과 눈물로 양육한 결과로 그 교인들의 이름이 벌써 생명책에 기록되어 있는 것을 보고 기뻐하며 감사했습니다. 그렇다면 우리들 또한 빌립보 교인들과 같이 하나님의 말씀에 순종과 헌신으로 응답하는 기쁨의 열매가 되어야겠습니다.
