A Man Who Received God's Blessing
2 Samuel 6:1-15
Today’s scripture text reveals the secret behind how Obed-Edom who was merely one of the harpists and one of the gatekeeper who guarded the gate to the Ark was able to receive this great blessing during this short period of 3 months that he sheltered the Ark of Covenant. Through this message, I sincerely hope that all of you will receive God’s blessings this year like Obed-Edom.
I. Like Obed-Edom, we must only trust the Word of God and only serve the Word of God.
Even though God commanded Moses that when the Ark of Covenant is to be transported, it must be carried on the shoulders of the Kohatites from the Tribe of Levi, but the Israelites did not obey this command. And Uzzah grabbed the Ark of Covenant with his hands with his humanly thoughts, so God struck him down and he died there. While this was going on, it was Obed-Edom who received the greatest blessing of all people. From his name, “Obed” means “to serve” which is derived from a Hebrew word “Abad (עָבַד),” so the name Obed-Edom contains the literal meaning of “worshipper of Edom” or “serving Edom” Like his name sake, Obed-Edom was merely a nameless gatekeeper who served his superiors and a man who fervently loved God. As a result, not only he received so much blessing that the news of him was spread throughout the whole nation but 62 people of his descendants were blessed to serve the temple until King Amaziah (1 Chr 26:4-8).
II. Obed-Edom was a person who was chosen from the multitudes of people.
It is stated in 1 Chr 13:13-14 that when the Ark of Covenant stayed in the house of Obed-Edom, it remained with the “family” of Obed-Edom for 3 months. What this means is that it did not remain only with Obed-Edom but with everyone who lives in that house such as all descendants, relatives and family members. When we compare this with the family of the Priest Eli, we can see how great this blessing is for Obed-Edom. Although Eli himself may have lived a life of faith, his sons were wicked; so the wrath of God was upon them that they both died in the battle with the Philistines. On the contrary, Obed-Edom and all of his family members gave thanks, prayed and glorified God while they sheltered this Ark of Covenant. Because God knows this ahead of time, He did not lead the Ark of Covenant to the house of centurions, to the commanders or to the house of the famous, but to the house of Obed-Edom. Obed-Edom was specially chosen from the multitudes of people. If so, what type of people in the Bible was specially chosen by God like Obed-Edom? In 1 Kings 17, a widow at Zarephath sincerely served the man of God. Even though she decided to make a last meal with a handful of flour and a few drops of oil, eat it with her son and die, she offered to Elijah without hesitation when he requested. This is an action that is impossible to conduct without the faith to consider Prophet Elijah as God. However, as a result of her generous action, she received the blessing of abundance that the flour and oil never dried out. The tax collector Zacchaeus in Lk 19 and the woman who had been suffering from hemophilia for 12 years in Mk 5 all came forward to Jesus with faith and were able to receive blessing when they obeyed the Word of Jesus. We can see from the examples of the people mentioned above that such blessing in short is given commonly to those who are close to only God, welcome only God in their hearts, do not desert the Word but try to live according to the Word. If so, I would like all of you to believe that each and every one of you will become spiritual Obed-Edom when all of you are close to God, do not leave the Word of God, accept Him in your hearts and try to live a life filled with joy and happiness throughout this year.
III. The blessing will surely come in this year of 2017.
What Obed-Edom received during the short 3 months while the Ark of Covenant remained in his house was not a simple good fortune but the “blessing.” If he received such a great blessing that the whole nation was envious of during this period, its secret is on the Ark of Covenant. In other words, inside the Ark were two stone tablets that the Ten Commandments were inscribed on. This symbolizes Jesus Christ who is the Word (1 Cor 10:4, Dan 2:44). Secondly, there was a jar of manna in the Ark of Covenant, and it signifies Jesus Christ who is the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35). Lastly, there was a budded staff of Aaron. This symbolizes the resurrected Jesus, and at the same time; all these 3 items that were in the Ark of Covenant symbolize the Word of Jesus. If so, I sincerely believe that when we also accept Jesus in our hearts who is the Spiritual Ark of Covenant, we will receive the same blessing in the year 2017 like Obed-Edom.
Conclusion:
The blessings that came upon the house of Obed-Edom were the blessing of salvation, blessing of possession, the blessing of the life of missionary to proclaim the gospel by making many people envious, and the blessing of prosperity and success that all wishes and the desires of the heart was accomplished. Furthermore, these blessings did not end at the current generation but continued on to his descendants to descendants, and they received the blessing to serve the House of God. This shows that those people that God stays with, their households and the nations will become the head of all nations, the light of all towns and receive the blessing of consecration that wherever they go, they will be the head and not the tail. I truly hope and pray that such blessings will be upon all of you this year.
하나님의 축복을 받은 사람

오늘 본문은, 수금을 타는 자 중에 한 사람이자 궤의 문을 지키는 수문장에 불과했던 오벧에돔이 하나님의 법궤를 모신 3개월의 짧은 기간 동안 어떻게 큰 축복을 받을 수 있었는지 그 비결을 말씀해 주고 있습니다. 이를 통해 금년 한 해 모든 성도님들이 오벧에돔과 같이 하나님의 축복을 받아 누리는 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
1. 오벧에돔처럼 말씀만을 믿고 말씀만을 섬겨야 합니다.
하나님은 모세에게 법궤를 운반할 때는 레위 지파 중 고핫 자손에게 어깨에 메고 운반하라고 명령하셨지만, 이스라엘은 이에 순종하지 않았습니다. 그리고 웃사는 인간적인 생각에 법궤를 손으로 붙잡았으므로 하나님께서 충돌하셔서 죽고 말았던 것입니다. 이런 중에 가장 복을 받은 사람은 다름 아닌 오벧에돔이었습니다. 그의 이름 중 ‘오벧’은 ‘섬기다’라 뜻의 히브리어 ‘아바드’에서 온 말로서, “에돔을 섬기는” 혹은 “에돔의 예배자”라는 문자적 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 그 이름의 뜻과 같이, 오벧에돔은 미미한 문지기에 지나지 않았지만 자기 상관을 사랑하는 사람이었고, 중심으로 하나님을 뜨겁게 사랑했던 사람입니다. 그 결과로 온 나라에 그 소문이 퍼질 정도로 복을 받았을 뿐 아니라, 아마샤 왕 때까지 그의 자손들이 62명이나 성전에서 봉사하는 축복을 받았습니다 (대상26:4-8).
2. 오벧에돔은 수많은 사람 가운데 선택받은 사람입니다.
법궤가 오벧에돔의 집에 있는 동안 “그 권속과 함께” 석 달을 있었다고 대상 13:13-14에 말씀하고 있습니다. 즉 오벧에돔 한 사람과만 함께한 것이 아니라 그 집에 거하는 모든 자손들과 친척, 권속들 전체와 함께했다는 것입니다. 이는 엘리 제사장의 가정을 볼 때, 제사장 자신은 하나님과 함께하는 생활을 했을지라도 그 아들들은 불량자로서 하나님과 함께하지 못할 때 블레셋 전투에서 한꺼번에 죽는 재앙이 임했던 것과 비교해 보면, 얼마나 큰 축복인가를 알 수 있습니다. 오벧에돔의 모든 권속은 법궤를 모시면서 감사하고, 기도하고, 하나님께 영광 돌리는 생활을 했던 것입니다.
이를 미리 아셨기에 하나님께서는 백부장이나 천부장, 유명한 사람들의 집으로 법궤를 이끄시지 않으시고 오벧에돔의 집으로 인도하셨던 것입니다. 오벧에돔은 수많은 사람 가운데 특별히 선택받은 사람입니다. 그렇다면 성경을 볼 때에 어떤 사람들이 오벧에돔과 같이 하나님의 선택을 받는 자가 되었습니까? 왕상 17장에 사르밧의 한 과부가 하나님의 사람을 진실하게 대접하는 사람이었습니다. 그는 마지막 남은 밀가루와 기름 몇 방울로 떡을 만들어 아들과 먹고 죽기를 결심하였지만, 그것마저도 엘리야 선지자가 요구하자 망설임 없이 모두 바쳤습니다. 엘리야 선지자를 하나님과 같이 여기는 믿음이 없이는 불가능한 행위입니다. 그렇지만 그 행한 결과로, 그녀는 밀가루와 기름이 다하지 않는 풍요의 축복을 받게 되었습니다. 눅 19장의 세리장 삭개오와, 막 5장의 12년 동안 혈루증을 앓은 여인이 다 믿음으로 예수께 나왔고, 예수님의 말씀에 순종했기에 축복을 받았습니다.
이러한 축복은 한마디로 하나님만을 가까이하고, 하나님만을 모시고, 말씀을 저버리지 않고 말씀대로 살려고 애쓰는 사람들에게만 공통적으로 주어진다는 것을 위의 사람들의 경우를 통해서 알 수 있습니다. 그렇다면 금년 한 해 모든 성도님들이 하나님을 가까이하고 하나님의 말씀을 놓치지 않고 모시는 가운데 기쁨과 즐거움으로 살려고 할 때, 각자 여러분 자신이 신령한 오벧에돔이 된다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
3. 반드시 축복이 임하고 마는 2017년, 이 한 해입니다.
오벧에돔이 법궤를 모신 짧은 3개월의 기간 동안 받은 복은 단순한 복이 아니라 ‘축복’입니다. 그가 이 기간 동안 나라 전체가 부러워할 정도로 엄청난 복을 받았다면, 그 비결은 법궤에 있습니다. 즉 법궤에는 십계명이 새겨져 있는 언약의 돌판이 있었습니다. 이는 말씀 되신 예수 그리스도를 상징합니다(고전 10:4, 단 2:44). 두 번째로, 만나를 담은 항아리가 들어 있는데, 이는 생명의 떡이신 예수 그리스도를 상징합니다(요 6:35 이하). 끝으로, 아론의 싹 난 지팡이가 있었습니다. 이는 부활하신 예수님을 상징하며, 동시에 이들 법궤 속에 있던 세 가지 물건 전체는 예수님의 말씀을 상징하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 우리 또한 오벧에돔처럼 신령한 법궤 되신 예수님을 모시고 살 때 2017년 한 해도 오벧에돔과 같은 축복이 반드시 임할 줄 믿습니다.
결론:
오벧에돔의 집에 임한 축복은 구원의 축복, 소유의 축복, 많은 사람들의 부러움을 사게 하여 복음을 전하는 선교적 삶의 축복, 모든 마음에 원하는 소원대로 성취가 되는 형통의 축복이었습니다. 그리고 그 축복은 당대에 그친 것이 아니라, 그의 자자손손으로 이어져서 하나님의 집을 맡는 축복을 받았습니다. 이는 하나님께서 함께하는 사람, 그 가정, 나라야말로 열국의 머리가 되고 모든 동네의 빛이 되며, 어디 가든지 꼬리가 되지 않고 머리가 되는 성별된 축복을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이러한 축복이 임하는 한 해가 되시기를 축원합니다.
