Even Though the Lord has Come Again to Seek the Fruits of This Year
Luke 13:1-9
Since the Fall of Adam to this date, God is waiting for all of us to repent. The two incidents appear in today’s scripture text contain “repentance” as a common theme. The incident where the blood of the Galileans was mixed with the sacrifice or the deaths of 18 people due to the collapse of the tower in Siloam are connected with the theme, “Unless you repent, you too will all perish.” The fig tree planted in the vineyard will be cut down and thrown away if it does not bear fruit even though there were owner’s hard work and care. The reason that we are unhappy is all because of “sin.” If “death came as a result of that sin,” I would like all of you to completely repent before this year passes by so that you are worthy of the time and the land that our Master allotted for you.
I. The attention of the vineyard owner is on the “abundant” fruits.
The attention of the vineyard owner is on only one, which is on the “abundant” fruits. When we look at v6 of today’s scripture text, the vineyard owner planted a fig tree in his vineyard. It is also stated in Ps 80:8, “You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.” God drove out the 7 nations of Canaan and transplanted the Israelites, His chosen people, in that land and made them settle there. This fig tree that has been planted here is under a very optimal condition. This vineyard was under such an optimal condition that its owner took care of it with such care and hard work, and it was fenced so that a fox or other wicked beasts could not enter in. This is the tree that was planted in such a rich and fertile land. Furthermore, the vineyard worker pulled the weeds out, watered it and fertilized it so that this fig tree can grow well. It was planted in a very special place and was reared with such care. This was a fig tree that was planted in a very good spot where it was “very good” in the eyes of the Master and was reared with such care. That is why the owner has no choice but to hope for abundant fruits with his special love and attention he gave it. The word “seek” is defined as 1) find, 2) desperately wander to find3) asking like a beggar is begging. If the tree bore abundant fruits, the owner will confidently come and fetch the fruits but due to an opposite outcome, the owner was not able to fulfill his duty as an owner. That is why the owner glanced at the tree instead and to see if there were any fruits and begged for a fruit like a beggar. Lastly, it is defined as 4) diligently expect. As you can see, the purpose of existence for a fig tree is on the fruit itself. The fruit is indeed the function of a fig tree as well as its life. However, the kind expectation of an owner had collapsed. “For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any” (v7). The owner was completely disappointed and distraught. The result of the owner’s disappointment is nothing but the judgment. We must be able to hear the voice of the Lord reproaching us “how come you are only wasting the soil?” The fig tree became unworthy of its name, land, time, and all the efforts and attention it received. A land symbolizes our body given from God, our talents and techniques. The Lord came to seek for the fruits grown in the land with hopes and expectations; but He was not able to acquire it, so He commanded to “cut it down and throw away.” If it was cut down and thrown away, it will only be used to kindle a fire; so the end result of the owner’s judgment is the judgment of fire (Mt 3:12).
II. By the intercessory prayer of the vineyard worker, the execution of the judgment was postponed.
Piercing through the irate reproach of the Master, Jesus who is the vineyard worker is standing at the seat of the intercessor and pleading wholeheartedly. We must be able to see the image of the intercessor who is kneeling down and pleading for us, “Lord, please leave it alone for this year.”
The prayer stated in v8 “I’ll dig around it and fertilize it” is the prayer that satisfies God’s righteousness. “If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down” (v9)- This verse means, “if you give me one more chance and be patient with me for one more year, I will work harder and give fertilizer so that it will bear fruit.” Didn’t he pray earnestly for one more chance? With the saddened and wailing heart to pray at the Mt. Gethsemane, he is praying fervently and earnestly to the Master for the final plea, so God’s terrifying command of judgment has been postponed. The prayer of the vineyard worker is the image of Jesus who is still standing on the right side of God and praying for us. I would like all of you to see the image of the Lord who is praying wholeheartedly for us who lived away from the Will and would like you to recant and make it an opportunity of repentance. As you can see, the Lord embraced fruitless fig tree like us. He did not blame our sin but trusted us that we will ultimately overcome sin and return to him. It is likewise for the disciples. Jesus did not believe their mistrust but believed that they would repent and return. Didn’t his disciples all return to Jesus and fulfilled their duties as great apostles just like how he trusted them?
Conclusion:
Our Green Hill Church is the church that is thriving and productive. It is not a fig tree full of words, but it is a thriving church full of abundant fruits. When we think of year 2016, we have nothing but being thankful. There were frustrations, regrets and grumbling at times but He gave us a chance to repent and to bear fruit through today’s message. In this year where we only have a few days remaining, I would like all of you to understand the longing of the Master and bear the fruits that are appropriate for the name a “fig tree.”
주인께서는 금년에도 열매를 구하러 찾아오셨는데

아담 타락 이후 지금까지 하나님은 우리가 모두 ‘회개’하기를 기다리고 계십니다. 오늘 본문에 나오는 두 가지 사건은 모두 ‘회개’라는 공통점을 안고 있습니다. 갈릴리 사람들의 피를 제물에 섞은 것이나 실로암 망대의 붕괴로 18명이 죽은 사건은 모두 “너희도 회개치 아니하면 다 이와 같이 망하리라” 하신 주제와 연결됩니다. 포도원에 심긴 무화과나무도 주인의 정성과 사랑이 담겨 있지만 열매 맺지 않으면 찍어 버리겠다는 것입니다.
우리 인생이 불행한 이유도 다 ‘죄’ 때문입니다. 그 죄의 결과로 ‘사망’이 왔다면, 금년 한 해가 다 가기 전에 철두철미하게 회개함으로, 주인께서 우리에게 허락하신 땅과 시간의 값을 다 하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
1. 포도원 주인의 관심은 알찬 열매에 있습니다.
포도원 주인의 관심은 오직 하나, ‘알찬 열매’에 있습니다. 본문 6절 말씀을 볼 때, 포도원 주인이 포도원에 무화과나무 한 그루를 심었습니다. 시 80:8 말씀에도 “주께서 한 포도나무를 애굽에서 가져다가 열방을 쫓아내시고 이를 심으셨나이다”라고 하였습니다. 가나안 7족속 열왕을 쫓아내시고 선민 이스라엘을 그 땅에 심어 정착시키신 것입니다.
여기에 심어진 무화과나무는 참으로 좋은 조건 하에 있습니다. 주인이 정성으로 일군 포도원이 있고, 울타리를 쳐서 여우나 악한 짐승이 넘보지 못하게 좋은 환경을 꾸며 주셨습니다. 아주 비옥하고 풍요로운 땅에 심은 나무인 것입니다. 또한 무화과나무가 잘 자랄 수 있도록 두신 과원지기가 잡초를 뽑고 거름을 주고 물을 주었습니다. 아주 특별한 장소에 심어 정성을 다 쏟았습니다. 주인이 보기에 “심히 좋았더라” 할 만한 좋은 자리에 심어, 정성으로 기른 무화과나무입니다. 그러므로 주인은 특별한 관심과 사랑으로 알찬 열매를 기대할 수밖에 없습니다.
‘구한다’는 1) ‘찾는다’, 2) ‘찾아 헤맨다’, 3) ‘거지가 동냥을 구하듯 얻으러 다닌다’를 말합니다. 알찬 열매를 맺었으면 주인께서 당당하게 와서 가져가는데, 그렇지 못한 결과로 주인이 주인 노릇을 하지 못한 것입니다. 그래서 오히려 주인이 나무의 눈치를 보면서 열매가 없는가 하고 동냥 얻듯이 구하는 신세가 되고 만 것입니다. 4) ‘애써 기대한다’라는 뜻이 있습니다. 이처럼 무화과나무의 존재 목적은 열매 그 자체입니다. 열매야말로 무화과나무의 기능이요 생명입니다. 그러나 주인의 선한 기대는 무너지고 말았습니다. “내가 삼 년을 와서 이 무화과나무에 실과를 구하되 얻지 못하니”(:7), 주인이 완전히 실망하고 낙담했습니다.
주인의 실망의 결과는 오직 심판밖에 없습니다. “어찌 땅만 허비하느냐?” 호령하시는 주님의 책망의 소리를 들을 줄 알아야 합니다. 무화과나무가 나무 값도 하지 못하고 땅 값, 시간의 값, 무화과나무라는 이름의 값도 하지 못한 것입니다. 땅은 하나님께로부터 받은 우리의 몸, 그리고 재능과 기술 등을 말합니다. 주인은 기대와 소망 속에서 이 땅에서 자란 열매를 구하기 위해 오셨지만, 얻지 못하므로 “찍어버리라”라고 명령하셨습니다. 찍어서 버리면 불쏘시개가 될 뿐이니, 주인의 심판의 결국은 불 심판입니다 (마 3:12).
2. 과원지기의 중보기도로 심판의 집행이 유예되었습니다.
진노하는 주인의 책망의 음성을 뚫고, 과원지기이신 예수님께서 중보자의 자리에 서서 간절히 애원합니다. “주인이여, 금년 한 해만 참아 주십시오!” 하고 애원하며 무릎을 꿇고 우리를 대신하여 간절히 기도하시는 중보자의 모습을 볼 줄 알아야 합니다.
“내가 두루 파고 거름을 주리니”(:8)–이는 하나님의 공의를 만족시키는 기도입니다. “이 후에 만일 실과가 열면이어니와 그렇지 않으면 찍어 버리소서”–“금년 한 해만 더 참아 주시면 열심히 갈고 닦고 거름을 줘서 열매를 맺도록 하겠습니다.” 금년 한 번만 더 기회를 허락해 달라고 간절히 기도하지 않았습니까? 겟세마네 동산에서 심한 통곡과 눈물로 힘쓰고 애써 간절히 기도하시는 심정으로, 주인에게 마지막 간청을 올리는 주님의 기도로 하나님의 무시무시한 심판의 명령이 유예된 것입니다. 과원지기의 기도는 지금도 우편에 앉아 기도하시는 예수님의 모습입니다. 뜻과 상관없이 살아가던 인생들이라 할지라도, 지금도 나를 위해 간절히 기도하시는 주님의 모습을 보시고 한번 돌이켜 회개의 기회로 삼으시기 바랍니다.
이처럼 예수님은 열매 없는 무화과나무 같은 나 한 사람을 껴안아 주셨습니다. 우리의 죄를 탓하시지 않고, 결국엔 죄를 이기고 돌아올 것이라는 확신을 가지고 믿어 주셨습니다. 제자들에 대해서도 마찬가지입니다. 그들의 불신을 믿으신 것이 아니라, 제자들이 회개하고 돌아올 것을 믿으셨습니다. 예수님의 믿음대로 제자들이 다 돌아와서 위대한 사도로 사명을 다하지 않았습니까?
결론:
우리 평강제일교회는 살아 있는, 생산성이 있는 교회입니다. 말만 무성한 무화과나무가 아니라, 열매가 무성하고 주렁주렁 맺혀 있는 살아 있는 교회입니다. 2016년도 생각하면 생각할수록 감사밖에 없습니다. 때로는 짜증과 후회, 원망의 시간도 있었지만, 오늘 말씀을 통해 회개하게 하시고 열매 맺을 수 있는 기회를 주셨기 때문입니다. 이제 며칠 남지 않은 금년 한 해, 우리는 주인의 소원을 깨달아서 각자 ‘무화과나무’의 이름에 합당한 열매를 맺으시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
