The Mountains are High and the Valleys are Deep
Genesis 12:1-4, Psalm 90:1-17
Abraham trusted only the Word of God and left his hometown “without knowing where he was going.” Wherever Abraham went, he built an altar and tried to live according to the Word of God; however, we see there were many ups and downs in his life’s journey. In short, there were the mountains of success and the valleys of tribulations that he passed. This is life.
I. The life’s journey of Abraham that has many ups and downs
Let us take a look at the life’s journey of Abraham, the Forefather of our faith, who only trusted the Word of God and left his hometown! Even though he built an altar everywhere he went and lived to walk with God, he left the land that God designated and went down to Egypt when he encountered the famine; and he suffered the hardship that he almost lost his beautiful wife there. Doesn’t this incident show that Abraham will encounter high mountains and deep valleys on his way to God? Abraham almost encountered a conflict because of his nephew Lot. Abraham encountered a suffering where his nephew Lot and his family were captured by the enemy during a war; so he took his private soldiers of 318 men that he raised at home and rescued them. However, he met with Melchizedek on his way back, received the blessing of Bread and Wine as well as the Word of Blessing that God Himself will be his shield and reward. Even though Abraham received the covenant from God about his descendants, he yielded a fruit of distrust when he listened to his wife, took her servant Hagar and begot Ishmael. He also received a command to sacrifice his only son Isaac on a mountain in the region of Moriah which was like a bolt out of the blue. However, while he was walking on the painful 3-day journey, Abraham encountered a new experience to be saved again. His entire life’s journey is indeed identical to climbing a mountain and passing through a valley. However, Abraham flattened innumerable ups and downs with a bulldozer of faith. When there was a high mountain, he flattened it and when there was a deep valley, he covered it; so he straightened the way of the Messiah.
II. Only the Everlasting God is the safe haven for life’s ups and downs
Moses confessed in today’s scripture text, Ps 90:10, “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow.” It is also stated in v3-4 of today’s scripture that the life on the earth is like a “watch in the night.” Hence, the life departed from God is like a dust that carries the trouble and the sorrow. That is why Moses confessed “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations” (Ps 90:1). Doesn’t this tell us that the eternal safe haven for life of a sojourner and a traveler is only God and not this earth? Life seems like it will last forever on this earth, but it is temporary and vain, like a watch in the night that will ultimately return to dust. Isn’t Moses confessing that life is nothing but trouble and sorrow instead of joy and happiness? That is why the way to live our short life with many ups and downs of trouble and sorrow is to remember only God and hold on to the Hand of faith and love. Like Augustine who once said, “we must consider our days that we encounter daily as our last days of our lives, we must “make the most of every opportunity” (Eph 5:15-16) and live to devote our lives to the Will of God. Like Moses who petitioned to live with the Lord’s kindness and mercy, we must have diligence to fear God and live according to the Word. Like Joshua who stopped the sun, we must live a life of faith that is hotter than the sun. Those who are like that will live at peace on this earth that has many ups and downs.
III. Make straight path of the Lord
When there are lots of ups and downs in life like the mountains and the valleys, it becomes difficult to come near God. That is why we must be the “voice” of the one calling to prepare the way to the Lord like Prophet Isaiah had said. The “voice” is something that reveals the Word while it itself is hidden. It is like John the Baptist who fulfilled the duty of the “voice” to disappear himself after he revealed Jesus on the earth who is the Word (Lk 3:4-6). If those who proclaimed the Word reveal “themselves,” then the Word will be covered and vanished. We must only reveal the everlasting Word of Jesus Christ and the Cross of salvation. That is the duty of the “voice” that John the Baptist upheld. When the Lord is coming to me, the path must not be too high or too deep that will exhaust him. All the mountains of arrogance and the valleys of corruption that exist in the scenes of our lives must be flattened with the bulldozer of Word. The greed, schemes and scams that are as deep as the valleys must be eliminated. All high and low mountains of arrogance, self-worth and self-pride must be thrown away and be flattened. Crooked things, i.e. dishonest and bent heart, unjust and hypocrisy must be repented. This is the work where the high mountains become low and the deep valleys are covered and become flattened. We must walk on the impartial path to stay closely in tact with honesty and integrity. When that happens, all flesh will see the salvation of God.
Conclusion
As we examine Abraham’s life’s journey, the life on the earth is a life with many ups and downs where the mountains intersect with the valleys. That is why we must rely on God more and more and make Him our safe haven, so we can straighten the path that is bent, high or deep with the bulldozer of Word.
산은 높고 골은 깊다

아브라함은 하나님의 말씀만을 믿고 ‘갈 바를 알지 못하고’ 고향 땅을 떠났습니다. 가는 곳마다 제단을 쌓고 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하는 삶을 살려고 애썼지만, 그의 인생 여정을 보면 수많은 굴곡이 있음을 볼수 있습니다. 한마디로, 형통의 산도 있고 고난의 골짜기도 거쳐 갔던 것입니다. 그것이 인생입니다.
1. 굴곡 많은 아브라함의 인생 여정
믿음의 조상으로서 오직 하나님의 말씀만을 믿고 고향 땅을 떠난 아브라함의 인생 여정을 살펴보십시오! 가는 곳마다 제단을 쌓고 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살았지만, 흉년을 만나 하나님께서 정하여 주신 땅을 등지고 애굽으로 내려갔으며, 그곳에서는 아리따운 아내를 빼앗길 뻔한 고난을 겪게 되었습니다. 이는 아브라함이 하나님 앞으로 가는 노정에서 높은 산도 만나고 깊은 골짜기도 만날 것임을 시사해 주는 사건이 아니겠습니까?조카 롯 때문에 하마터면 분쟁이 일어날 뻔하기도 했습니다. 전쟁으로 조카 롯의 가족을 빼앗겨 집에서 기른 318명의 사병을 이끌고 되찾아오는 고통을 겪기도했습니다. 그러나 돌아오는 길에는 멜기세덱을 만나떡과 포도주의 축복을 받고, 하나님 자신이 방패와 상급이 되어 주시겠다는 축복의 말씀도 받게 됩니다. 자손에 대한 하나님의 약속을 받고도, 아내의 말을 듣고몸종 하갈을 취하여 이스마엘을 낳는 불신의 열매도맺었습니다. 독자 이삭을 모리아 땅의 한 산에 바치라는 청천벽력과도 같은 명령도 받았습니다. 그러나 3일간의 고통스런 길을 걷는 가운데 다시 건짐을 받는체험도 하게 되었습니다. 이 모든 아브라함의 인생 여정은 그야말로 산을 넘고 골짜기를 지나는 것과 같습니다. 그러나 아브라함은 그 수많은 인생의 굴곡을 믿음의 불도저로 다 평탄케 했습니다. 높은 산이 나타나면 깎아 내고, 깊은 골짜기를 만나면 메워서 메시야가오는 크고 평탄한 길을 닦았던 것입니다.
2. 영원하신 하나님만이 굴곡 많은 인생의 안식처
모세는 오늘 본문 시 90:10에서 “인생의 연수가 70이요 강건하면 80이라도 그 연수의 자랑은 수고와 슬픔뿐”이라고 고백하고 있습니다. 본문 3-4절에서도 이땅에서 인생의 삶은 “밤의 한 경점 같”다고 말씀하고있으니, 하나님을 떠난 인생은 수고와 슬픔을 안고 살아가는 티끌과 같을 뿐입니다. 그렇기 때문에 모세는 주님만이 대대에 우리의 영원한 거처가 되신다고 고백하고 있는 것입니다(시 90:1). 이는 바로 나그네와 행인 같은 인생의 영원한 안식처는 이 땅이 아니라 오직 하나님임을 가리키는 말씀이 아니겠습니까? 이 땅에 영원히 살 것 같은 인생이지만, 결국 인생은 티끌로 돌아가고 마는 허무한 존재, 밤의 한 경점과도 같이 짧은 존재입니다. 그나마도 기쁨과 즐거움보다는 수고와 슬픔뿐인 삶이라고 모세는 고백하고 있지 않습니까? 그렇기 때문에 짧은 우리의 인생, 수고와 슬픔의 질곡 많은 인생을 보람 있게 사는 방법은 오직 하나님만을 기억하고, 늘 생각하며 믿음의 손으로 붙잡고 사랑하는 것입니다. “우리의 매일 당하는 그날을 우리의 일생의 최후의 날과 같이 여겨야 된다”라는 어거스틴의 말처럼, 세월을 아껴 (엡 5:15-16) 주의 뜻에헌신하는 삶을 살아야 합니다. 주의 인자와 자비를 힘입어 살게 해 달라고 몸부림치는 모세와 같이, 하나님을 경외하고 말씀대로 살고자 하는 열심이 있어야 합니다. 태양을 멈춘 여호수아처럼 태양보다 더 뜨거운 믿음의 삶을 살아야 합니다. 그러한 자들만이 굴곡 많은 이 세상에서 평안한 삶을 누릴 수 있습니다.
3. 주의 길을 평탄케 하라
인생에 산과 골짜기와 같은 굴곡이 많게 되면 하나님께로 나아가기가 어렵습니다. 그러므로 이사야 선지자의 말씀과 같이, 외치는 자의 ‘소리’가 되어 주 앞으로 나아가는 길을 평탄케 해야 됩니다. ‘소리’는 말씀을 나타내 놓고 자신은 사라지는 존재입니다. 마치 세례 요한이 말씀이신 예수님은 세상에 나타내고 자신은 없어지는 ‘소리’의 사명을 감당했던 것과 같습니다 (눅 3:4-6). 말씀을 전하는 자가 ‘자기’를 나타내면 말씀은 가려지고 없어지고 맙니다. 오직 예수님만 나타내고, 그리스도의 영생의 말씀과 구원의 십자가만을 드러내야 됩니다. 그것이 세례 요한이 감당한 ‘소리’의사명입니다. 주님께서 나에게 오시는데 너무나 높고 골이 깊어서 피곤해서는 안 되겠습니다. 우리 인생의 현장에 있는 모든 교만의 산과 부조리의 골짜기를 말씀의 불도저로 평탄하게 만드는 역사가 있어야만 하겠습니다. 골짜기와 같이 깊은 욕심과 올무와 술수를 다 없애야 됩니다. 모든 산과 작은 산과 같은 교만, 자존심, 자기 자랑을 버리고 낮아져야 됩니다. 굽은 것 즉 정직하지 못하고 굽은 마음, 불의와 외식하는 마음을 회개해야 합니다. 이것이 높은 산과 골짜기를 닦아 평지가 되게 하는 역사입니다. 험한 길은 술수와 음모와 악한 죄와 범죄의 길을 가리키는 말입니다. 이러한 것들을 다 회개할 때 평탄한 길이 됩니다. 정직과 도덕에서 추호도 흠이 없을 정도로 ‘정도(正道)’를 걸어야 합니다. 그랬을 때 모든 육체가 하나님의 구원을 본다고 했습니다.
결론
아브라함의 인생 여정에서 살펴보았듯이 이땅에서의 삶은 산과 골짜기가 교차하는 굴곡 많은 삶일 뿐입니다. 그렇기 때문에 더더욱 하나님만을 의지하고 안식처 삼아, 말씀의 불도저로 모든 굽은 것, 높이 솟은 것, 깊게 패인 것을 갈아엎어 평탄케 해야 합니다.
