Jesus Gave Thanks in All Circumstances

Jesus Gave Thanks in All Circumstances
Jesus Gave Thanks in All Circumstances
Philippians 2:19-30

It is the Will of God and His demand that He has for us in Christ to rejoice always, to pray continually and to give thanks in all circumstances. We must reflect on our past whether or not we only gave thanks for the big things in life, but grumbled instead on things we view as unacceptable. When we live a thankful life, we can defeat wickedness. Thankfulness becomes a weapon that conquers and forces to surrender hardship, afflictions, distress, persecution, misunderstanding, famine and even death. King Jehoshaphat put singers before God and had them to give thanks when Moab and Ammon invaded Judah (2 Chr 20:21). At that time, God defeated them with ambush. The Israelites gathered at the Valley of Berakah and gave thanks and praises (2 Chr 20:25-26). Job, too, gave thanks and praises with the faith of nakedness when he lost all his possessions and children overnight (Job 1:21). As a result, Job received abundant blessings. Our Lord too always gave thanks to Father. He gave thanks greatly in 4 occasions. I would like to receive grace through our Lord’s thanksgiving.

I. Jesus gave thanks for the small things.
To a hungry crowd of thousands, 7 loaves of bread with 2 small fish (Mat 15:32-38) and 5 loaves of bread with 2 fish seemed like worthless and insignificant food of the poor (Jn 6:4-13). However, Jesus offered earnest prayer of thanksgiving to God for this (Mat 14:19, Jn 6:11). This became a starting point of a miracle, where the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish became enough to feed 5000 people. It was distributed to them as much as they wanted and there were still leftovers that filled 12 baskets (Mat 14:20, Jn 6:11-13). My beloved saints! Please give thanks for the small things. A miracle will surely happen. A man cannot know happiness if all he does is grumble. However, happiness will come to those who are always thankful. Though we may not be happy, when we give thanks the blessing of prosperity and success will come and everything will go well. If we see things through the eyes of complaints, the world seems unacceptable. On the other hand, if we see things through the thankful eyes, there is nothing but thanksgiving. Everything around us becomes the reason to be thankful.

II. Jesus gave thanks when he completely failed.
The towns that Jesus showed most power and sincerity to did not repent. That was why the Lord fiercely judged Chorazin and Bathsaida (Mat 11:21). He cursed Capernaum. We can feel Jesus’ sadness, emptiness and frustration. How disappointing is it when there are no fruits of effort? At that time, our Lord’s disappointment reached its peak (Mat 11:20). Yet, Jesus gave thanks at that very moment by saying, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children” (Mat 11:25). Here, “little children” refers to his disciples. Even though his ministry has failed, Jesus gave thanks when he saw the kingdom of God was quietly being expanded through his disciples who were like little children. Moreover, the Lord said it was the Father’s Will (Mat 11:26).

III. Jesus gave thanks for the fact that God heard his prayers.
At Lazarus’ tomb, Jesus gave thanks to God that He heard his prayers (Jn 11:41). The Lord did not request to resuscitate his beloved Lazarus. After he gave thanks to God for hearing his prayers, Jesus commanded toward death and called out to Lazarus by saying, “Lazarus, come out!” (Jn 11:43). When that happened, the dead man came out from his tomb, with his hands and feet still wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Although he was dead for 4 days and started to emit foul odor, the work of re-creation began as death surrendered to life with the Word of the Lord (Jn 11:44). Thankfulness started such work of life.

IV. Jesus gave thanks when he was faced with crucifixion.
Jesus shared his last supper with his disciples at the Upper room of Mark and John before he was faced with crucifixion. During his last meal he spoke saying, “I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Mat 26:29). Jesus saw and knew what would happen to him the next day. He already saw that he would be flogged, punched, crowned with a thorns and crucified on the cross, yet he endured this excruciating pain. In the midst of all this, he shared bread with his disciples and said it was his body; and shared wine and said it was his blood and gave thanks (Lk 22:17-20, Mat 26:26-28). Even though they were sharing Jesus’ Last Supper, the disciples did not know the definition or the meaning of Holy Communion. Moreover, the Lord knew of the betrayal that was to come from Judas Iscariot. He already knew of Peter’s denial. The heart of the Lord was lonely and deeply saddened (Mat 8:20, 26:37-38, Lk 9:58). However, the Lord still gave thanks.

Conclusion:
When there is no thankfulness, arrogance will come. God will judge those who are arrogant (Lk 14:11). However, when your heart is filled with thankfulness, the work of love will start. The Lord is the completion of the law (Rom 13:10). I sincerely hope that we always devote ourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful (Col 4:2).
