A Life Where One can Clap His Hands
You can clap your hands when both of your hands are empty. Yet, if you are holding something in one hand, you are no longer able to do so. Of the crowd who was listening to Jesus, one man came over to him and requested, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me” (Lk 12:13). When Jesus looked at him, he was full of greed and desires, so Jesus said, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you? Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (Lk 12:14-15). The hands of a foolish rich man were full (Lk 12:16-21). A rich young man had one empty hand, but the other hand was full (Mk 10:17-22). That was why neither of them were able to clap.
I. A foolish rich man.
Fall came and a rich man was able to harvest abundant crops. He said to himself, “I will build bigger barns, and there I will store my surplus grain. My spirit will be pleased.” However, God said, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” Continued on by saying, “Whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God is a fool.” Being wealthy is not a sin. A wealth is an inheritance and a gift from the Lord. However, it is foolish to think that you own that wealth and that it can only used for you. My beloved saints! Everything was created by God. The land and everything in it (Ps 24:1). All of the gold and silver belongs to God (Hag 2:8). On his deathbed, King David confessed a great confession that everything came from God, and he has given Him only what came from His hand (1 Chr 29:14-16). We are merely the custodians who manage assets. The owner of wealth is no one but God (Deut 8:18). The rich man mentioned above was a crooked person who said he would use this wealth in any way he desired even though it was only temporarily entrusted to him. This foolish rich man did not have the ability in his life to clap for both of his hands were full (Ecc 6:1-2). He was solely focused on building more barns, and his satisfaction was on storing his surplus. There was no future for him. He only knew how to store his wealth, but did not know how to store it in heaven (Mt 6:20). He knew how to build a barn on the earth, but did not know how to build a sturdy barn in heaven that will not rust. This rich man was spiritually a penny-less, poor man. My beloved saints! The purpose of our life is not on ourselves, but on the glory of God (Ecc 10:31).
II. A rich young man.
This second person ran to Jesus while he pondered deeply about future life and living eternally and asked,” What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him by saying to obey the ten commandments. This rich young man told Jesus that he has obeyed all commandments. Jesus spoke to him of one thing that he lacked by stating, “One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Mk 10:21). However, this man’s face fell at this time and went away sad because he had great wealth. When Jesus looked at this young man, he was full of loneliness, worries and emptiness. When Jesus saw that, He presented him with a conditional freedom (Mk 10:21-22). The Lord told him to sell all his possessions to help the needy. Jesus was telling him to open his hands that had been closed shut. It is because he can clap hands only if his hands are open. Jesus commanded this young man to host a “garage sale.” He was telling this young man to dispose all his greed that has been filling his heart and accept God in the center of his heart while loving Him with all his heart.
Conclusion:
It is more of a blessing to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). When we give, He will “press down, shake together and run over and will pour” into our lap (Lk 6:38). We must host our own “garage sale” to reflect back on ourselves and organize ourselves. A swift horse does not like to be locked up in a stable. A flower wants to blossom and emit fragrance. A saint is such being. Let us be generous toward God. I sincerely bless everyone in the name of the Lord that our hands become the holy hands that can clap for the remaining days of our lives.
손뼉을 칠 수 있는 생애
손뼉은 두 손이 다 비어 있어야만 칠 수가 있습니다. 한 손에 물건을 붙잡아도 손뼉을 칠 수가 없습니다. 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 있던 무리 중에 한 사람이 예수께 나아와서 ‘선생님, 내 형이 재산이 많은데, 그 형을 명해서 유업을 함께 나누게 하소서’(눅 12:13)라고 요청을 했습니다. 주님이 보시니 탐심과 욕심이 가득했습니다. 그래서 주님은 “이 사람아 누가 나를 너희의 재판장이나 물건 나누는 자로 세웠느냐 삼가 모든 탐심을 물리치라 사람의 생명이 그 소유의 넉넉한 데 있지 아니하니라”(눅 12:14-15)라고 말씀하셨습니다.
어리석은 부자의 양손은 꽉 차 있어서 더 이상 붙잡을 수가 없을 정도입니다(눅 12:16-21). 부자 청년은 한 손은 비었지만 다른 한 손은 꽉 차 있습니다(막 10:17-22). 그래서 둘 다 손뼉을 칠 수 없습니다.
1. 어리석은 부자
부자가 소출이 풍성한 가을을 만났습니다. 부자는 ‘수확이 많으니 더 많은 창고를 짓자, 곡식과 재산을 차곡차곡 쌓아 두자. 내 영혼아 기뻐하라’라고 스스로에게 말을 했습니다. 그때 하나님이 들으시고 물으십니다. “어리석은 자여, 바로 내가 오늘밤에 네 영혼을 가져가면, 네가 준비한 것이 누구 것이 되겠느냐?” 그러시면서 ‘하나님께 부요하지 못하고 자기를 위하여 재산을 쌓아 두는 사람은 어리석다’라고 말씀하셨습니다.
재물을 많이 가졌다는 것이 죄가 되는 것은 아닙니다. 재물은 하나님이 주시는 기업이고 선물입니다. 다만 그 재물의 소유주가 자기 자신이고, 재물을 자신만을 위하여 사용한다고 생각하는 것이 어리석은 것입니다.
성도 여러분, 만물은 하나님이 창조하셨고, 땅과 거기 충만한 것이 하나님 것이며(시 24:1), 금도 은도 하나님의 것입니다(학 2:8).
다윗왕은 임종 직전에 ‘모든 것이 주께로부터 왔으며 주께 받은 것을 주께 드렸다’(대상 29:14-16)고 위대한 고백을 했습니다. 인간은 물질의 관리인에 지나지 않습니다. 물질의 주인은 오직 하나님밖에 없습니다(신 8:18).
위의 부자는 정말 빗나간 사람입니다. 잠시 동안 위탁된 물질을 자기를 위해서 마음껏 쓰겠다고 하고 있습니다. 어리석은 부자는 생의 손뼉을 칠 수 있는 여유가 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 두 손이 꽉 차 있기 때문입니다(전 6:1-2).
어리석은 부자의 관심은 창고를 짓는 일입니다. 그리고 그의 보람은 재물을 쌓아 두는 것입니다. 그에게는 내세가 없습니다. 그는 보물을 땅에 쌓아 둘 줄만 알았지, 하늘에 쌓아 둘 줄은 몰랐습니다(마 6:20). 땅의 곳간을 지으면서 녹슬지 않는 하늘 곳간을 지을 줄을 몰랐습니다. 이 부자는 영적으로 땡전 한 푼 없는 가난뱅이입니다. 성도 여러분, 우리 삶의 목적은 자신에게 있는 것이 아니라, 오직 하나님의 영광에 있습니다(고전 10:31).
2. 부자 청년
다른 한 사람은 내세 곧 영생 문제에 대해서 고민하는 가운데 주님께 달려와서, ‘선생님! 내가 어떻게 하여야 영생을 얻으리이까’라고 주님께 질문을 했습니다. 주님은 계명을 지키라고 말씀을 하셨습니다. 부자 청년은 ‘다 지켰다’고 했습니다. 주님은 그에게 한 가지 부족한 것을 말씀하셨습니다.
“네게 오히려 한 가지 부족한 것이 있으니 가서 네 있는 것을 다 팔아 가난한 자들을 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 좇으라”(막 10:21). 그러나 그 청년은 재물이 많은 고로 슬픈 기색을 띠고 근심하며 돌아갔습니다.
예수께서 그 부자 청년을 보니 고독과 불안, 허무감으로 그 마음이 가득 차 있었습니다. 그것을 보시고 주님은 해방시켜 주시는 조건을 제시했습니다. 그러한 것들이 꽉 찬 것을 꿰뚫어 보시고 그를 진정으로 해방시켜 주는 조건을 제시하신 것입니다(막 10:21-22). 주님은 재물을 다 팔아서 가난한 자에게 주라고 말씀하셨습니다. 꽉 잡고 있는 손을 시원하게 펴라는 것입니다. 꼭꼭 쥔 손을 시원하게 펴야만 손뼉을 칠 수 있기 때문입니다.
예수님은 그 부자 청년에게 ‘거라지 세일’(garage sale)을 명령하셨습니다. 인간 창고 마음속을 가득 메우고 있는 욕심을 처분해 버리고 하나님을 뜨겁게 사랑하면서 마음 중심에 모시라는 것입니다.
결론:
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 받는 자보다 주는 자가 더 복이 있습니다(행 20:35). 주면 후히 되어 누르고 흔들어 넘치도록 안겨 주시겠다고 하셨습니다(눅 6:38). 거라지 세일(garage sale)을 하여 자기를 정돈하고 점검해야 합니다. 천리마(千里馬)는 마구간에 갇혀 있기를 싫어합니다. 꽃은 활짝 펴면서 향기를 토하기를 원합니다. 성도가 바로 그러한 존재입니다.
우리는 하나님께 대하여 부요합시다. 우리의 남은 생애에 손뼉을 칠 수 있는 그러한 거룩한 손 되시기를 주의 이름으로 축원합니다.
