Philemon 1:1-3

God gave the original source of solace and happiness to all mankind on this earth and it is the “family” which is the fundamental unit of the church and the nation, as well as the foundation for the stability and peace. The history of mankind started from the family of Adam in the Garden of
Eden, but he lost his wife due to sin and lost his family and children as well. The morals and ethics can no longer exist in mankind who has departed from God; it only darkens the family in anything he does, as well as the society, nation, and its people. Thus, Jesus came to the earth in order to find the lost families once again. By coming to the house of Zacchaeus and proclaiming “Today, salvation has come to this house,” Jesus is declaring the blessing of finding the “lost families.” Many people would worry about the problems of the society and the church, but the way to resolve these problems is to firmly erect the household. Because the assembly of the families will erect a nation and initiate the church, the “family” is most sacred.

I. In the house of Philemon, there was a great head of the household of faith.
In order for a nation to be properly erected, a family has to be properly erected; and in order for a family to be properly instituted, the head of household of one’s family should properly stand up. If one got married and formed a family, he should be able to handle the responsibilities for his wife and the duties for his children. Philemon who appears in today’s scripture text is the head of household for his family. He was a model husband for his wife and the exemplary father that exhibited a great image as a head of household. First, he was an essential worker in the Early Church of Colossae and an associate who was loved by Apostle Paul. Moreover, he was a person who had dedicated his faith in the Early Church. With a faith without any shadows and the uniformity that he was the same inside and out, he treated everyone with love like he would love himself when he encountered others. Philemon also opened his house to the church. His house was publicly opened and served whoever visited him and the whole household was devoted to serving God. It was the household of Philemon that the head of household, his wife and his children were united as one and became a household that feared God. Thus, Philemon was a 1) man of faith, 2) a man of love, 3) a diligent man, 4) a holy man, 5) s msn with strong sense of service, 6) a cooperative man, 7) a creative man, 8) a man of tolerance and embrace, and 9) a loving and exemplary husband to his wife and a model father to his sons. Because Philemon was such a man of faith, the rays of righteousness of God were always shining brightly upon his household. There was no trace of darkness in his household. Nowadays, we see many wives who deserved to be happy are unhappy because of their husbands. There are so many head of households that do not take care of their wives and children but batter them, abuse them, and deceive them instead. We see many cases where these sons and daughters have twisted personalities, become scoundrels and become heavy burdens and dark shadows in the society. Thus, those who are the head of the households ought to completely repent before their families while sharply criticize themselves and come to realization. Those who are able to do such will be able to repent before God.

II. There was a wise housewife in the house of Philemon.
In the backgrounds of a great person, there is a great mother; and there is a wise housewife in the great household. From 2 Tim 1, we see Timothy the associate of Apostle Paul, was a person who was reared on the foundation of faith of his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. From today’s scripture text, Apphia, the wife of Philemon who takes care of her household is being introduced. There is no other explanation about her, but we see that her life and faith had no trace of shame before God or other people when we see her name confidently appears in the Book of Philemon. When we see Apostle Paul referred to her as a “sister” and recorded her name, we must not think of her as an ordinary woman. The reason that Paul considered Apphia as a special woman and treated her as such was because she cooperated so that her husband could partake in the Ministry of God. How was it possible for Philemon to follow Apostle Paul and proclaim the gospel all over the place if it weren’t for the assistance of his wife? Apphia dedicated her husband for the will of God and dedicated her son Archippus to be a brave and courageous soldier of Cross that does not know how to back down. As a result, a father, a mother, and a son were united as one in the house of Philemon; and on that foundation of faith, the Church of Colossae was founded on the house of Philemon. This is impossible without the support of a wife or the understanding of a son. It is not an exaggeration to say that the mood of one’s household depends on the personality and the character of a mother. Because there is great mother of faith in the house of Philemon, there was hope in the children who were raised in that household. When we see that Paul referred Archippus as the soldier, we can see that he was young, brave, wise, knowledgeable, filial to his parents and polite.

Conclusion:
There should be unity in a father, a mother and the children in the house of the believers. Like it is stated in Ecc 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken,” when the parents and the children are bound with a cord of 3 strands, it will never be broken. A bright household will make a bright society and a bright church; and the children who were reared in the bright households are confident without any areas creases wherever they go. I sincerely hope that we rear all our children completely with the Word (2 Tim 3:16-17) and the parents become completely one with their children, so that all of our households will become an ideal household that is always thankful to God like the household of Philemon.
