Examine Yourself First and Learn About the Secret of Holy Communion
Matthew 26:26-30, 1 Corinthians 11:17-29

Today’s scripture text urges that the proper attitude to partake in Holy Communion is that one must examine himself first and learn about the secrets of Holy Communion. In order to become the Atonement sacrifice, Jesus who is the One and Only Son of God, came to this earth as “the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world.” Moreover, because he gave all his flesh and blood to us and became our Life, we will receive new life as we eat the flesh and blood of the Lord through Holy Communion. Hence, let us examine together the proper attitude of the believers that partake in Holy Communion.

I. We must examine ourselves first.
As Jesus commanded his beloved disciples to celebrate the last Passover and to prepare for it, Jesus said “I would like to eat with you.” As you can see, Jesus wanted to celebrate Passover together with his disciples, but the Bible describes his emotion as he was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” because he foresaw and knew their distrust and betrayal. During such circumstances, Jesus shared with his disciples a bread and wine that signified his flesh and blood. What this represents is that this is the moment that Jesus gives new life to those who are destined to die due to sin and blemishes by giving his flesh; and it is also the moment that he supplies us with the power of life to abolish death by squeezing out his blood and allowed us to drink it. Hence, when we partake in Holy Communion that commemorates his flesh and blood, we must examine ourselves first. So whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of “sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” Whoever eats and drinks without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves (1 Cor 11:26, 28). Only those whose sins are completely cleansed first by receiving baptism before God and by confessing their faith before Him can partake in Holy Communion. Not only that, those who commit the sins of slandering, hating, and endangering others cannot partake in Holy Communion. However, those who completely repent will be forgiven no matter what type of sins they have committed. Whoever repents can partake in Holy Communion. Thus, we must first revive ourselves with Jesus’ precious blood shed on the cross and His Word that saved us from all our transgressions and forgave all our sins with that precious blood even though he gave up all his flesh and blood for us and crucified and died on the cross.

II. We must understand the mystery of Holy Communion.
God already foretold through Moses that the Savior of mankind will come as the Lamb of God and will save the myriads of people with His flesh and blood. From this, we can understand the mystery of Holy Communion. First, God told Moses about the regulations about slaughtering the Passover lamb. He told Moses to slaughter 1-year old male lamb without blemishes or defects. God told him to take it on the 10th of the first month and slaughter it on the 14th day between 3-6 pm. A slaughtered lamb must be roasted over fire and eaten, with doors closed and remain inside. They were to sprinkle the blood on the doorposts and door frames and were commanded never to break the bone (Exo 12:1-14). As a result of the Israelites’ obedience regarding this command, the bone of Jesus was not broken and crucified on the Hills of Golgotha, so he poured out his blood and thereby supplied life to those who believed him. Furthermore, the Israelites were commanded to eat bitter vegetables and unleavened bread at the crack of dawn next morning. Here, “bitter vegetable” contains the meaning to remind the Israelites to remember the hardships they had suffered in Egypt; while eating the unleavened bread means to cast away the “lumps” of their transgressions. The “yeast” signifies the sinfulness, and Jesus too considered the Pharisees and the teachers of the law during his time as the “lumps of sin” and warned to be cautious of the yeast of the Pharisees and the teachers of the laws. That is why Apostle Paul advised us to “keep the Festival with the new unleavened bread” (1 Cor 5:7). As you can see, by enacting the statutes of Passover through Moses, God already foretold of the flesh and blood of Jesus given in Holy Communion. Hence, if we partake in Holy Communion and eat the flesh of the Lord that is without yeast, we can receive the new life of resurrection and by drinking by faith the blood of the Passover lamb that allowed life in the midst of death, we will receive the blessing that no death or darkness will ever be allowed to touch us. This is the mystery of Holy Communion. It is the ceremony of Holy Communion in the very moment that we become one with the Lord during our fellowship with the Lord; and we will dwell in Him as He will dwell in us. Hence, those who cannot partake in the ceremony of Holy Communion will never be able to receive salvation.

III. We must understand the mystery of the Lord who came as the Passover Lamb without defects.
Jesus is God who was enrobed with the flesh and came to this earth. The reason that He was without defects even though He possessed the same flesh like us, was because He was not born with paternal attributes and maternal blood like us, but was born through Immaculate Conception; so He is the “One and Only Lamb without blemishes or defects” (1Pet 1:18). Even though he belonged to flesh and blood like us but He is powerful God who abolished death and eliminated devil (1 Jn 3:8). As you can see, only One who can completely destroy devil is the Messiah Jesus Christ who is sinless but took on flesh according to the Word of God and came to this earth as a Man. He is the One that gives us blood and flesh. That is why the Bible testifies throughout the Bible about the Lord who came sinless (Heb 4:14, 2 Cor 5:21, Heb 9:28, 1 Pet 2:22).

Conclusion:
Now, Jesus wants to give us eternal life by allowing us to eat his flesh and drink his blood through the ceremony of Holy Communion. I sincerely hope that there will be great blessing that all our sins will be forgiven and become pure and innocent believers without defects or blemishes by eating the bread of life of the Lord and drinking his precious blood.
