The King of all Kings, Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:1-17
Today is the day that Jesus who is the King of all kings has entered the City of Jerusalem triumphantly, and it is called the Palm Sunday which marks the commencement of the Passion Week. Even though Jesus made triumphal entry as the King of all kings, he was crucified on the cross in just a few days because the voices of the people overpowered Pilate. However, the cross of Jesus is the cross of love and reconciliation as well as the cross that mended the broken relationship between God and the mankind. As we welcome the Palm Sunday this year, I sincerely hope that we accept Jesus who is entering the City while bearing the cross of love, reconciliation and victory into our hearts and our lives.
I. The people greeted Jesus who is entering the City as the King of all kings with the praise of “Hosanna.”
The word “Hosanna” contains the meaning of “Lord, please save us now” or “beseeching earnestly.” When Jesus entered the City of Jerusalem, the sounds of praise of the people shouting “Hosanna” was so great that the whole city stirred. If so, what is the meaning of the sound of praise, “Hosanna”? First, it is the solemn moment to proclaim that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Second, it is the moment to bring Jesus’ 3 years of public ministry to close; and lastly it is a solemn moment to enter Jerusalem for the final time for the work of redemption. Like the Word in Jn 12:24 where Jesus says, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds,” he entered the City of Jerusalem to save many people through the precious blood shed on the cross as a sacrificial kernel of wheat. Today, on this first day, Jesus entered the City of Jerusalem as an eternal High Priest in order to resolve the problems of the loveless people and dark City that are like the wicked and adulterous generation as well as faithless and corrupt generation. He was being carried by a young colt in order to give the Spirit of life and resurrection to the people who only have curses, death and judgments. I would like all of you to deeply think about the image of our Lord.
II. Jesus who is entering the City of Jerusalem must enter our life.
Jesus, who entered the City of Jerusalem 2000 years ago, wants to open the door to our hearts and enter through Holy Spirit right now. All we have to do is to open the door to our heats with faith. I would like all of us to stop what we are doing and rush to open the door to welcome Jesus into our hearts. When the door of our hearts first opens up, we can shout “Praise Hosanna, please save us.” I sincerely hope that all of you will believe that Jesus did not just die eternally when he entered the City of Jerusalem 2000 years ago but believe that he is entering to you to this date, so I would like all of you to open the doors to your hearts to welcome him. After Jesus abolished the power of death and appeared 11 times, he ascended into heaven at the Mount of Olives while 500 people watched. The final word he said at that time was “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:20). Jesus widely opened the doors of our hearts filled with poverty, despair and illnesses, and wants to enter our hearts with the news of peace, prosperity and health. We must believe this Word, open our hearts and accept Jesus with faith who is entering the City 2000 years ago. Jesus is the secret of God and all prosperity, wisdom, intelligence and treasures are contained in Him (Col 2:2-3). Hence, whoever does not doubt but accepts Jesus who is entering the City, all his problems will be resolved.
III. Let us change Jesus’ direction of travel that is entering Jerusalem to the Church.
We must change Jesus’ direction of travel that is entering the City of Jerusalem to our church today. If Jesus who entered Jerusalem first cleansed the temple, what do you think Jesus will say to us about our church and about us when he comes to our church today? Jesus who is entering Jerusalem did the following. First, he reproached the corruption of the Church before he reproached the corruption of the world. He first reproached diseased faith, and corrupt and rotten religion. Second, Jesus who came to our church today reproached the religious leaders before he reproached the politicians or Rabbis. Third, before he was angry at the Gentiles, he was angry at the Pharisees (Mt 23). Hence, as we welcome Jesus into our hearts, we must first have the heart, dedication and offering of devotion of an owner of a colt who offered it to the Lord. It is the token of respect toward the King and teaches us about true consecration. We must also lay the cloaks on the ground. This refers to the offering of sacrifice. Like a blind man Bartimaeus who was able to see when he threw his cloak aside and ran to Jesus when he heard that Jesus was calling him (Mk 10:46-50), we must run to Jesus. Lastly, the people laid on the ground the palm branches that represent peace. If so, what will you and I lay before Jesus who is entering our church today?
Conclusion:
Even before we share the excitement and the joy of Jesus’ triumphal entry into the City of Jerusalem as the King of all kings, we see the intense image of Jesus running toward the Cross. I sincerely hope that while we follow the footsteps of Jesus this week which starts from the Palm Sunday, we encounter the experience of being crucified on the cross with the Lord. Hence, I sincerely hope that the living confession of resurrection will be overflowing that our lives from now on are not on ourselves but with the faith of trusting Jesus.
만왕의 왕, 승리의 입성
마 21:1-17
오늘은 만왕의 왕 되신 예수님께서 예루살렘 성에 승리의 입성을 하신 날로, 종려주일이기도 하며 고난주간의 첫 시작이 되는 날이기도 합니다.
예수님께서는 만왕의 왕으로 승리의 입성을 하였지만, 불과 며칠이 안 되어서 백성의 소리가 빌라도를 이기므로 십자가에 달리시고 말았습니다. 하지만 예수님의 십자가는 사랑과 화목의 십자가, 분리된 하나님과 나 사이를 연결시켜 주는 십자가입니다. 금번 종려주일을 맞아 이처럼 사랑과 화목과 승리의 십자가를 지고 입성하시는 예수님을 각자 나의 생활과 심령 속에 모셔 들이는 역사가 있기를 바랍니다.
1. 만왕의 왕의 입성을 백성은 ‘호산나’ 찬송으로 환영했습니다.
‘호산나’란 말은 ‘주여, 이제 구원하소서,’ ‘간절히 간구합니다’ 등의 뜻을 가지고 있는데, 예수님께서 예루살렘 성에 입성하실 때 환호하는 백성의 이 호산나 찬송 소리가 얼마나 컸던지 예루살렘이 소동할 정도였습니다. 그렇다면 ‘호산나’ 찬양 소리의 의미는 무엇입니까?
먼저는 예수님께서 평화의 왕이심을 선포하는 엄숙한 순간입니다. 두 번째는 예수님의 3년간의 공생애를 마무리하는 시간이며, 끝으로는 십자가의 구속 사업을 위해서 예루살렘에 마지막으로 입성하시는 엄숙한 순간입니다. “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(요 12:24) 하신 예수님의 말씀처럼, 그분은 희생의 밀알로 십자가 보혈의 공로를 통해 많은 백성을 구원하시기 위해 예루살렘에 입성하신 것입니다. 예수님은 영원한 대제사장으로서 악하고 음란한 세대, 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대와 같이 빛이 없는 도성, 사랑이 없는 백성의 문제를 해결해 주시기 위해 오늘 첫날 입성하신 것입니다. 그분은 저주와 죽음과 심판만이 남아 있는 백성에게 생명과 부활의 영을 주시려고 어린 나귀에 실려서 가고 계십니다. 그 주님의 모습을 한 번 깊이 생각해 보시기 바랍니다.
2. 예루살렘에 입성하시는 예수님이 내 생활에 꼭 입성하셔야 됩니다.
과거 2천 년 전에 예루살렘에 입성하셨던 예수님은 지금 성령을 통해서 우리의 마음 문을 열고 입성하기를 원하고 계십니다. 이제 우리는 믿음으로 마음 문만 열면 됩니다. 빨리 나가서 하던 일을 멈추고 문을 열어서 예수님을 맞이하시기 바랍니다. 우리의 심령의 문이 먼저 열릴 때, 우리도 “호산나 찬송하리로다 우리를 구원하소서” 하는 소리를 외칠 수가 있습니다. 예수님은 2천 년 전에 예루살렘 도성에 입성하셔서 영원히 죽고 만 것이 아니라, 지금도 여러분들에게 입성하고 계시다는 것을 믿으시고, 마음 문을 열어 영접하시기 바랍니다.
예수님께서는 사망 권세를 깨뜨리시고 11번 동안 나타나신 후, 감람산에서 500명이 보는 데서 올라가셨습니다. 그때 마지막 하신 말씀이 “볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 함께 있으리라” (마 28:20)입니다. 예수님은 우리의 가난과 절망과 질병의 문을 활짝 여시고, 평화와 부요와 건강의 소식을 가지고 입성하시고자 합니다. 이 말씀을 믿고 우리의 마음 문을 열고 2천 년 전에 입성하시는 예수님을 믿음으로 모셔야만 하겠습니다. 예수님은 하나님의 비밀로, 그 속에 모든 부요, 지혜, 지식, 모든 보화가 들어 있습니다(골 2:2-3). 그러므로 누구든지 의심치 말고 오늘 입성하시는 예수님을 모시기만 하면 모든 문제가 해결됩니다.
3. 예루살렘에 입성하시는 예수님의 방향을 교회로 돌립시다.
2천 년 전에 예루살렘에 입성하시는 예수님의 방향을 오늘 우리 각자의 교회로 돌려야만 하겠습니다. 예루살렘에 입성하신 예수님은 먼저 성전을 청결케 하시는 일을 하셨다면, 오늘 우리 각자의 교회에 오신 주님은 교회에 대해서, 각자 나에 대해서 뭐라고 하시겠습니까?
예루살렘에 입성하시는 예수님은 1) 세상 부패를 탓하기 전에 성전의 부패를 책망하셨습니다. 병든 신앙, 부패하고 타락한 종교를 먼저 책망하신 것입니다. 2) 또한 오늘 교회에 입성하신 예수님은 정치인이나 랍비를 책망하기 전에 종교 지도자들을 책망하셨으며, 3) 이방인에게 노하시기 전에 바리새인들에게 분노하셨습니다(마 23장).
그러므로 이러한 예수님을 모셔 들임에 있어, 우리는 먼저 나귀 새끼를 드린 주인과 같은 헌신, 봉사, 바치는 마음을 가져야겠습니다. 그것은 왕에 대한 존경의 표시이자 참된 성별을 우리에게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 또한 겉옷을 벗어 길에 깔아야 됩니다. 이것은 희생의 제물을 뜻합니다. 소경 바디매오가 예수의 부르심을 듣고 얼마나 기뻤던지 겉옷까지 벗어 앞에 달려가므로 보게 되었던 것처럼(막 10:46-50), 우리도 달려가야 합니다. 끝으로, 백성은 평화를 상징하는 종려나무 가지를 길에 깔았습니다. 그렇다면 저와 여러분들은 오늘 우리교회에 입성하신 예수님 앞에 무엇을 깔아 드리겠습니까?
결론:
오늘 우리는 만왕의 왕 되신 예수님의 승리의 입성의 기쁨과 감격을 채 나누기도 전에 십자가를 향해 달려가시는 예수님의 비장한 모습을 발견하게 됩니다. 종려주일부터 시작되는 주의 발자취를 믿음으로 한 주간 동안 따라가는 가운데, 주와 함께 십자가에 못 박히는 체험, 그리하여 이제부터 내가 사는 것이 내가 아니라 주 안에서 예수를 믿는 믿음으로 산다고 하는 산 부활의 고백이 넘쳐나는 성도들이 되시기 바랍니다.
