The Name of God
Hosea 6:3, John 17:3
The “name” which appears in the Bible represents the existence of the one that bears that name. Hence, “forgetting” its name denotes the loss of its existence. To this, the writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes said, “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten..” That is why a good name is better than fine perfume (Ecc 7:1). It is because a good name represents the “goodness” of its existence. If so, the name of our God is also the beautiful name in all the earth (Ps 8:1, 148:13). The Bible testifies this beautiful name as “Jehovah,” and I would like all of you to press on to acknowledge “Jehovah” the name of our Lord like Prophet Hosea said (Hos 6:3).
I. The meaning of the name “Jehovah”.
Because the name denotes “existence,” the action of Moses that asked about the name of the Lord was a question to confirm the “existence” of God. To Moses’ such questioning, God said of Himself as “Jehovah” or “I am who I am” (Exo 3:14-15).
1) I am who I am-The word “Jehovah” is an “everlasting name” of God, and it contains the meaning of “eternally self-existing One” or “He is who He is.” God is the Lord of everything and the start of the foundation. He is self-existing God who dwells and who is who He is. Basically, everyone is non-existent except God. Because God who is self-existing God made us to exist from nothing, our only master is our God. Hence, those of us who believe in Him will also become ones who “exist,” and those who do not believe in Him are ones who are “non-existent.”
2) Commemorative title- It is said in Hos 12:5 that the name of “Jehovah” is the name of God. “Commemorative” refers to something we must remember. Thus, just like how we choose from all creation that is worth commemorating and name it as natural heritage to remember it, we must always think about God who is the Lord of our remembrance. Thus, “Jehovah” which is God’s commemorative title means “Jehovah is the name that contains something that humans must remember.” In other words, it contains the meaning that God will never forget about us. There are many instances where the humans become forgetful, but God is the one who will continuously guide and hold on to us once He acknowledges us. Hence, it contains the meaning, “Do not forget about Me since I will not forget about you.”
3) Generations to come- The name of God is the name to be remembered for generations to come. What this means is that we must not fall short from God and our faith is interconnected so that our descendants of the descendants are able to bear fruits in the generations to come (Ps 102:12, 135:13, Isa 26:8).
II. The attributes of God that is manifested in the name “Jehovah”.
1) The Holy One- In terms of His existence, God is far above the dimensions than we are. We exist not because we want to exist but God who is who He is has enabled us to exist so we must completely trust and obey the Word of He who made us to exist. Because God is absolutely holy, we will become the children of God when our faith, prayer, praise, and entire life become blameless. As you can see, when God is holy, it means there is no death eternally and His love remains unchanged forever.
2) God the Creator- As it is stated, “It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.” (Isa 45:12), God created the heavens and earth, created a man from the dust, instilled living breath into his nostrils and made him a living being. Hence, the reason that we remember God’s name is “Jehovah” is because He is the Creator and is worthy to be praised and worshipped (Neh 9:6, Rev 4:11, 14:7).
3) God who is worthy to be glorified- Because God is the One who created us, we must offer worship that is appropriate for Him. The Book of Revelation in particular emphasizes the worship to the Creator, and the Book of Proverbs uses the name “Jehovah” 87 times to emphasize that we must remember and worship our God, not only as the Creator but as the Lord of wisdom. As a result of Adam, the forefather of mankind, who failed to remember the name of Jehovah, his descendants lost wisdom from birth, so it urges us to remember and love God who created us. Therefore, when we think “we exist without Jehovah our God,” He commands them to return everything that He had created. So when we forget God, we lose everything. On the contrary, God will bless those who fear, respect and remember Him and will let them “have everything” for generations to come.
Conclusion:
In Gen 3:4-7, when the serpent tempted Eve, it said, “You surely will not die! and you will be like God,” What it means is “you can exist without God,” so it is the word of deception and the word of a murderer that kills. As a result of hearing such word of the serpent, what the earth gave Adam and Eve were nothing but the thorns and thistles. If so, I sincerely hope that we come forward to God who is the Lord of life, acknowledge that He is who He is, who self-exists from eternity to eternity, so we can see the Light within the lights.

성경에서 ‘이름’은 그것을 지닌 자의 존재를 대표합니다. 그러므로 이름을 잊어버린다는 것은 그 존재를 잃게 됨을 뜻합니다. 이에 대해 전도서 기자는 “무릇 산 자는 죽을 줄을 알되 죽은 자는 아무도 모르며 다시는 상도 받지 못할 것은 그 이름이 잊어버린 바 됨이라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그래서 아름다운 이름은 보배로운 기름보다 낫습니다(전 7:1). 아름다운 이름은 그 존재의 아름다움을 대표하기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 우리 하나님의 이름 또한 온 땅에 아름다운 이름입니다(시 8:1, 148:13). 그 아름다운 이름을 성경은 ‘여호와’라고 증거하고 있는데, 호세아 선지자의 말처럼 하나님의 이름인 ‘여호와’를 힘써 아는 자들이 되기를 바랍니다(호 6:3).
1. ‘여호와’란 이름의 의미.
이름은 존재를 나타내는 것이기 때문에, 모세가 하나님께 그 이름을 묻는 행위는 하나님의 존재를 확인하는 질문입니다. 이러한 모세의 질문에 하나님은 당신을 ‘여호와, 곧 스스로 있는 자’라고 말씀해 주셨습니다(출 3:14-15).
1) 있는 자
여호와란 말은 하나님의 ‘영원한 이름’으로, ‘영원 자존자’, ‘있는 자’란 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 하나님은 모든 것의 모든 것이며 기초의 시작입니다. 그분은 자존자(自存者)이며, ‘계신 자’, ‘있는 자’입니다. 하나님 외에는 모두가 근본적으로 ‘없는 자’입니다. 없는 것을 ‘있는 자’이신 하나님께서 있게 하셨으므로 우리의 주인은 오직 한 분 하나님뿐이며, 그분을 믿는 우리도 곧 ‘있는 자’가 됩니다. 그러므로 하나님을 믿는 자는 ‘있는 자’이지만, 믿지 않는 자는 ‘없는 자’입니다.
2) 기념 칭호
‘여호와’란 이름은 하나님의 기념 칭호라고 호 12:5에 말씀하고 있습니다. ‘기념’이란 말은 우리가 기억해야 할 것을 지칭합니다. 그래서 만물 중에도 잊지 말고 기억해야 할 것들은 천연기념물로 지정하여 기억하듯이, 우리는 기억의 주인 되시는 하나님을 늘 생각해야 합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 기념 칭호인 ‘여호와’란 명칭은 ‘여호와는 사람이 꼭 기억해야 할 무엇이 있는 이름’이란 뜻입니다. 바꾸어 말하면, 하나님은 우리를 절대 잊어버리지 않으시는 분이라는 의미가 담겨 있습니다.
사람은 잊어버리는 경우가 많지만, 하나님은 한번 인정하면 끝까지 잊지 않고 붙잡아 주시는 분입니다. 그러므로 ‘내가 너를 잊어버리지 않으니 너도 나를 잊지 말라’는 뜻이 담겨져 있는 것입니다.
3) 대대로
하나님의 이름은 대대로 기억할 이름입니다. 이는 우리가 하나님의 이름에서 대대로 떨어지지 아니하고 그 믿음이 연결되어 자자손손 대대로 믿음의 결실을 맺어야 하는 뜻이 담겨 있습니다(시 102:12, 135:13, 사 26:8).
2. ‘여호와’란 이름에 나타난 하나님의 속성.
1) 거룩한 자
하나님은 존재에서 있어서 우리와 차원이 다르십니다. 각자 나는 내가 있고 싶어서 있는 것이 아니라 스스로 계신 자가 있게 해서 존재하기 때문에, 나를 있게 하신 분을 신뢰하고 그분의 말씀에 순종해야 합니다. 하나님은 절대 거룩하시기 때문에 우리의 믿음과 기도, 찬송, 생활 전체가 아름다워야 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다. 이처럼 하나님께서 거룩하시다는 것은 영원히 죽음이 없으시며, 영원히 사랑이 변치 않으시는 분이라는 뜻입니다.
2) 창조주 하나님
“내가 땅을 만들고 그 위에 사람을 창조하였으며 내가 친수로 하늘을 펴고 그 만상을 명하였노라”(사 45:12)라는 말씀처럼, 하나님은 천지를 창조하시고 그 흙으로 사람을 만들어 생기를 불어넣어 생령이 되게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 우리가 하나님의 이름이 ‘여호와’란 사실을 기억하는 것은 그분이 창조주이심을, 그래서 그분은 경배를 받기에 합당하신 분임을 말씀해 주고 있습니다(느 9:6, 계 4:11, 14:7).
3) 영광 받기에 합당하신 하나님
하나님은 우리를 창조하신 분이기에 우리는 그분에게 합당한 경배를 드려야 합니다. 특별히 계시록은 창조주를 경배하라고 강조하고 있으며, 잠언서에서는 ‘여호와’란 이름을 87번이라 사용함으로써 창조주이실 뿐 아니라 지혜의 주인이신 하나님을 기억하고 경배할 것을 강조하고 있습니다. 이는 인류 시조 아담이 여호와의 이름을 기억하는 일에 실패한 결과로, 그의 후손들은 날 때부터 지혜를 잊어버리고 태어났기에, 나를 창조해 주신 하나님을 기억하고 사랑하도록 권면하고 있는 것입니다.
그러므로 ‘여호와 하나님과 상관없이 내가 존재한다’라고 생각할 때, 하나님은 그런 주장을 하는 자에게 하나님이 창조해 준 모든 것을 반납하라고 명령하십니다. 하나님을 잊어버리면 모든 것을 잃게 됩니다. 반면에 하나님을 경외하고 기억하는 자를 하나님은 ‘있는 자’, ‘대대로’ 복을 받는 자로 삼아 주십니다.
결론:
창 3:4-7에서 뱀은 하와를 유혹하면서 ‘결코 죽지 않고 하나님과 같이 될 것이라’고 했습니다. 이 말의 뜻은 “너는 하나님과 상관없이도 존재할 수 있다”라는 뜻으로, 속임수의 말이며 죽이는 살인자의 말이었습니다. 이러한 뱀의 말을 들은 결과로 땅이 아담과 하와에게 선물한 것이 가시와 엉겅퀴뿐이었습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 생명의 주인이신 하나님께 나아와서, 그분이 ‘영원부터 영원까지 스스로 계신 하나님’이라는 사실을 깨닫고 광명 중에 광명을 보는 축복의 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
