Those Who Entered the Land of Canaan
Numbers 14:1-30
If it was the goal of the Israelites of the past to enter a land flowing with milk and honey, the land of promise and the land of abundance, it is the goal of faith for today’s Christians to enter the heaven, the spiritual Canaan. Thus, the course of Israelites’ entry into the City of Canaan has become many lessons for us who continue the march of pilgrimage toward heaven. However, today’s scripture is telling us that among the Israelites who left Egypt, only Joshua and Caleb will enter while the rest of the Israelites will never enter (Num 14:30). If so, let us examine together the secret behind how Joshua and Caleb were able to enter the Land of Canaan.
I. Joshua and Caleb never grumbled against God.
The biggest reason why the Israelites were not able to enter the Land of Canaan was because of grumbling. The Israelites grumbled against God so much that He said, “Just as you have spoken in My hearing, I will surely do to you…even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you…” (Num 14:28-30). All of the Israelites, except for Joshua and Caleb, grumbled against God. That is why God did not forgive all the people who grumbled against Him no matter how faithfully they have worked for Him. King Saul lost his throne with only one mistake of despising God, and Moses also did not get to enter the Land of Canaan due to his one incident of grumbling against God, even though he faithfully led the Israelites (Deut 1:1-3). As you can see, as a result of not properly accepting the Word of God and not understanding It, the Israelites spoke the words of distrust and resentment. These people remind us of Lot’s wife who became a pillar of salt when she ignored the command of God never to look back when leaving the City of Sodom and Gomorrah. Hence, when we trust and obey the Word of God no matter what He tells us to do and not commit the sin with our lips; we can enter the spiritual Land of Canaan like Joshua and Caleb.
II. Joshua and Caleb never neglected to do the Work of God.
Prophet Jeremiah clearly said, “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!” (Jer 48:10). This should be the proper attitude of those who receive the Word of God and obey His Will. The Israelites say they are doing the work of God but did not receive the Word, so they were not able to properly obey His Will. Because they were not able to differentiate between the first priority and the least priority, they spoke the word of the people first before they spoke the Word of God and neglected to do God’s work. “Neglect” refers to those who did not listen to the Word of God properly and had no protocols to conduct themselves appropriately, and acted impulsively as he is pleased; spoke the words of deception and mendacities. Thus, those who neglect the Work of God will be cursed, and those who speak in the name of other gods will also be killed (Deut 18:20). It is because God created our lips and ears, and He will surely judge us according to what He hears. That is why Jesus said, “But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops” (Lk 12:2-3). When we look at this, we can see that Joshua and Caleb, unlike the other Israelites, did not neglect God’s work or spoke in the name of other gods, but they acted and obeyed the Word of God as they heard.
III. Joshua and Caleb were the men of strong faith.
Joshua and Caleb who entered the Land of Canaan were the great people of faith who only believed the Word of God who pursued until the end according to their faith. Those people of faith are first, the man of prayer. They are like the ones who acquired the power of prayer like King Hezekiah whose life was extended by 15 years when he wept and prayed as soon as Prophet Isaiah told him that his life was coming to an end. Truly, those men of faith such as King Hezekiah, Joshua or Caleb were able to enter the Land of Promise led by God who is the Life and the Longevity, by loving and obeying only God (Deut 30:19-20). Second, they are the people who have the faith of transfiguration of eternal life without seeing death. If we believe the resurrection of the Lord as our resurrection, and also continued to live until the Lord’s second coming and have strong faith to believe in physical and spiritual transfiguration in glory, we will become great winner that swallows even death (1 Cor 15:54-55). Like Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (Jn 11:25-26), Joshua and Caleb had strong faith to believe this and were not swayed, so they were able to keep the faith for 40 years and enter the Land of Canaan.
Conclusion:
The Israelites experienced the great blessing that their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell during these forty years of wilderness journey (Deut 8:4, 29:5, Neh 9:21). However, if the Israelites were all destroyed in the wilderness because they did not obey the Word of God until the end but grumbled instead, we must always give thanks to God who gives us the victory and become those who stood firm to do the work of God diligently so that we all can enter the spiritual Land of Canaan like Joshua and Caleb (1 Cor 15:57-58).
가나안 땅에 들어간 사람들은?

과거 이스라엘 백성은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 약속의 땅, 풍요의 땅에 들어가는 것이 꿈이었다면, 오늘날 우리는 신령한 가나안인 천국에 들어가는 것이 신앙의 목표입니다. 그러므로 이스라엘의 가나안 입성의 과정은 천국을 향해 순례의 행진을 하는 우리에게 많은 교훈이 되고 있습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문은 출애굽 한 이스라엘 백성 중 오직 여호수아와 갈렙만이 들어가고 나머지는 결단코 들어가지 못한다고 말씀하고 있습니다(민 14:30). 그렇다면 여호수아와 갈렙은 어떻게 해서 가나안 땅에 들어갔는지, 그 비결을 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 여호수아와 갈렙은 하나님은 결코 원망하지 않았습니다.
이스라엘 백성이 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못한 가장 큰 이유는 ‘원망’ 때문이었습니다. 그들이 얼마나 하나님을 원망했던지, 하나님께서 “너희 말이 내 귀에 들린 대로 내가 너희에게 행하리니… 너희 이십 세 이상으로 계수함을 받은 자 곧 나를 원망한 자의 전부가… 결단코 들어가지 못하리라”(민 14:28-30)라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 여호수아와 갈렙을 제외한 모든 사람은 하나님을 원망한 자들이었던 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 하나님께서는 아무리 당신을 위해 충성했다 할지라도 원망하는 사람들은 용서하지 않으셨습니다. 사울 왕이 하나님을 업신여긴 한 번의 실수로 왕위를 빼앗겼고, 모세 또한 이스라엘 백성을 영도하는 일에 충성하였음에도 불구하고 한 번 원망하고 입방아 찧음으로 말미암아 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못했던 것입니다(신 1:1-3).
이처럼 이스라엘 백성은 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 영접하지도 않았고, 깨닫지 못한 결과로 불신과 원망의 입방아를 찧었던 것입니다. 이는 마치 소돔 성을 나올 때 결코 뒤돌아보지 말라고 명령하신 하나님의 말씀을 무시하고 뒤돌아봄으로써 소금기둥이 된 롯의 처와 같은 사람들인 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 어떠한 하나님의 말씀이든지 말씀대로 믿고 순종할 뿐 아니라 입술로 죄를 짓지 않을 때 여호수아와 갈렙같이 신령한 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수가 있는 것입니다.
2. 여호수아와 갈렙은 하나님의 일에 결코 태만히 하지 않았습니다.
예레미야 선지자는 “여호와의 일을 태만히 하는 자는 저주를 받을 것이요”(렘 48:10)라고 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 하나님의 말씀을 받고 뜻을 받드는 자의 자세를 말씀해 주고 있는 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성은 하나님의 일을 한다고 하면서도 말씀도 제대로 받지 않고, 그러니 하나님의 일을 제대로 받들지 못했던 것입니다. 우선과 차선을 가리지 못하므로 하나님의 일보다 사람의 일을 먼저 하고, 하나님의 일을 태만히 행했던 것입니다. ‘태만하다’라는 말은 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 듣지 않고 버릇과 예의가 없이 제 마음대로 함부로 날뛰고 말을 지어내는 자를 뜻합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 일을 태만히 하면 저주를 받으며, 방자히 행하는 자 또한 죽임을 당하게 됩니다(신 18:20). 그것은 하나님께서 우리의 입과 귀를 지으셨으며 우리의 말하는 것을 다 듣고 아시기 때문이며, 그리고 들으신 대로 반드시 심판하시기 때문입니다.
그러므로 예수님께서는 “감추인 것이 드러나지 않을 것이 없고 숨은 것이 알려지지 않을 것이 없나니 이러므로 너희가 어두운 데서 말한 모든 것이 광명한 데서 들리고 너희가 골방에서 귀에 대고 말한 것이 집 위에서 전파되리라”(눅 12:2-3)라고 말씀하셨던 것입니다. 이러한 내용을 볼 때, 여호수아와 갈렙은 다른 백성처럼 하나님의 일에 대해서 태만히, 방자히 행한 것이 아니라, 말씀을 들은 대로 행하고 순종한 믿음의 사람이었던 것을 알 수 있습니다.
3. 여호수아와 갈렙은 굳건한 믿음의 사람들이었습니다.
가나안 땅에 들어간 여호수아와 갈렙은 오직 하나님의 말씀을 굳건히 믿고 그 믿음대로 끝까지 행한 위대한 사람들이었습니다.
이러한 믿음의 사람들은 첫째, 기도의 사람입니다. 이는 마치 히스기야 왕이 자기의 생명이 다했다는 이사야 선지자의 선포를 듣자마자 울며 기도할 때 그 생명을 15년이나 연장 받은 것처럼, 기도의 능력을 얻은 사람들입니다. 참으로 히스기야나 여호수아와 갈렙 같은 신앙인들은 하나님만을 사랑하고 순종함으로써, ‘생명과 장수(長壽)’이신 하나님의 인도 하에 약속의 땅에 들어가게 되었던 것입니다(신 30:19-20).
둘째, 죽지 않고 영원히 사는 변화의 신앙을 가진 사람들입니다. 주님의 부활을 나의 부활로 믿고, 나아가서 주님 재림할 때까지 죽지 않고 살아서 영광 가운데 영육의 변화를 믿는 굳건한 믿음을 가지고 있으면, 사망마저도 집어 삼키는 위대한 신앙의 승리자가 되는 것입니다(고전 15:54-55). “나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐”(요 11:25-26) 하신 예수님의 말씀처럼, 여호수아와 갈렙은 이를 믿는 굳건한 믿음을 가지고 있었기에 흔들리지 않고 40년간 믿음을 지켜 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수 있었던 것입니다.
결론:
이스라엘 백성은 40년 광야 생활 중에 의복과 신발이 해어지지 않고 발이 부르트지 않는 축복을 체험했습니다(신 8:4, 29:5, 느 9:21). 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 끝까지 하나님의 말씀에 순종치 못하고 원망하므로 광야에서 다 멸망 받았다면, 우리는 날마다 우리에게 이김을 주시는 하나님께 감사하며, 견고하게 주의 일에 항상 힘쓰는 자들이 되어서, 여호수아와 갈렙처럼 신령한 가나안 땅에 다 들어가는 자들이 되어야겠습니다(고전 15:57-58).
