A Whole Life in a Flash (The Morning and the Evening)
Psalm 90:1-17

Through the confession of Moses, the father of law, today’s scripture text expresses the limitations and the meaninglessness of a sojourner who is agonized in the critical situation called time. If we look at v3-9 of today’s scripture text, a life ends in a flash like a “watch” in the night, like a dust that swept away like a flood, is as short as falling asleep for a moment, and like grass which sprouts anew and flourishes in the morning but fades and withers away in the evening. As you can see, one and only round of life is lived like a dust that blows away and a sojourner that passes by. If so, what is the meaning of morning and evening that is allotted for us?

I. It is the word that reveals the eternity of God.
It is stated in Ps 74:16, “The day is yours, and yours also the night.” If so, both the day and night belong to God, but we lived the year of 2016 without realizing this and were ungrateful to God. It is written in Gen 1, “there was evening and there was morning” and it was 1st day, 2nd day and all the way to the 7th day. However, it is said that all this was “good” in God’s eyes. It is because the morning and the evening were only created by our Living God. If so, those of us who lived in the time of God’s Creation, we must give thanks and seek God in the day, i.e. the light that God created and worship Him first. Furthermore, we must seek God’s true existence in the night within the darkness. Indeed, God who watched over us neither slumbered nor slept (Ps 121:4). It is because the day was created by God and so was the night. Thus, the morning and the evening are testifying for everlasting God. As you can see, if God gave us the morning and the evening last year for the purpose of the Providence of Salvation, did we live within the pleased eyes of God that “it was good” to His sight? Or did we live in the worries and anxieties, forgetting the morning and the evening?

II. It tells us of the finiteness of humans.
The fact that the evening turns to the morning denotes the finiteness of us humans. Thus, a man is allowed to live only up to the time that he made an agreement with God (2 Tim 4:7). The morning is a time that a flower blossoms. It refers to the starting point of life, birth and the beginning. On the other hand, the evening is a time that a plant is cut down, dried up and withered. This denotes the conclusion of life and the termination. Solomon spoke about this fact repeatedly as “a time to be born (morning) and a time to die (evening)” (Ecc 3:2). When we look at this, a life is like a mist, something that returns, and it is “brief.” Like the morning is not everlasting, our life is finite like a mist. Gen 5 records about the descendants after Adam, and the conclusion of that record was they “died.” Not only it teaches us that our life is not infinite but predetermined, it also contains the lesson which tells us not to desert the morning and the evening but hold unto them, and spend your days doing kind deeds and live according to the Will. Furthermore, it gives us the lesson that someday we will return to our eternal home to our dwelling place to rest and not wander on the streets forever.

III. It compares the aspects or modalities of man’s life.
It is stated in v6 of today’s scripture text, “In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.” Thus, the morning and the evening are relative and at the same time the same time, it compares the aspects of our lives. For example, when you are successful, it is morning; but it is the evening when you are unsuccessful. When you are promoted, it is the morning; but it is the evening when you become unemployed due to organizational restructuring. When you are born, it is the morning, however, when you die, it is the evening. When you are laughing out loud, it is the morning; however, when you sigh and groan, it is the evening. When your children obey you, it is the morning; but it is the evening when they do not. Thus, the morning for us is the time of joy filled with hope, but typically the evening is the time that is agonizing and the time that we despise. However, God says that both the morning and the evening were “good” in His eyes. If so, did we live with such principle of faith? As we close this year of 2016, I would like all of you to have a faith of “it was good” whether you encounter the morning or the evening, and overcome it with unchanging devotion and the faith of thanksgiving, and welcome the blessed morning of New Year of 2017.

Conclusion:
When we look at a year, the month of January symbolizes a morning whereas a month of December represents the evening; and it is the time to close. God gave 24 hours a day equally to everyone and will settle the “account” when the evening comes. Thus, we must faithfully work when the morning comes, be thankful and not slacking behind when it is time to receive grace, and abundant work of grace to cry out loud to God is overflowing in every individual and households. Furthermore, we must find both the morning and the evening that were “good” in God’s eyes, accurately settle our accounts with joy and thanksgiving before God and close everything properly.
