The Commoners Who Sought and Visited Jesus Who Was Born
Luke 2:21-39
Due to a fall of one person Adam, the ancestor of all mankind, the sin came to this earth; and as a result of sin, the death came (Rom 5:12, Rom 6:23). The Prophet Jeremiah testified that even if we cleanse our body with any soap or even if our flesh and bones are separated and boiled in abundant cleansing powder, we cannot resolve the fundamental problems of sin. There is only one person who can resolve the fundamental problems of sin and death and that is Jesus Christ who was born today in a manger. His birth is the glory to God and the peace to the people. I would like all of you to vacate your hearts and welcome him into your hearts. Jesus who was born today on this earth is the True Peace Himself that does not even have a trace of a shadow of uneasiness. If so, who welcomed our Lord 2000 years ago?
I. The commoners who met Jesus.
Even though Jesus clearly came to his land and not someone else’s land (Jn 1:11), no powerful people or religious leaders recognized Jesus and came forward to worship him who is the King of kings. Only those nameless and powerless commoners came to meet Baby Jesus as directed by the angels and worshipped him. First, the Bible speaks about Simeon and Anna. They are the people who consistently waited for the “consolation of the Lord,” and they are aged and old. Even though they were mere commoners that no one acknowledged or recognized them, God saw their consistent and burning hearts; and the Holy Spirit was always with them. As a result, the Holy Spirit inspired him so Simeon was able to enter the temple and recognize Jesus who came to be circumcised and shed tears of overwhelming joy-“For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations” (Lk 2:30-31). It is likewise with Anna. 7 years after she was married, Anna became a widow; and even though she was an elderly lady who had been a widow for 84 years, she was a faithful saint who “has never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers.” As a result, she was able to meet Baby Jesus who is the Savior of the mankind. Furthermore, the shepherds who were herding their flocks of sheep in the field heard the news of Jesus’ birth through the angels; so they received the grace to worship him with the Magi of the East. The shepherds represent all poor and underprivileged laborers on the earth who shed sweat drops on their foreheads. Even though their social class may have been low and their job was very difficult, they were innocent and honest. Although they were not treated properly as humans, they were always alert to pray to God and their hearts were filled with the desire to meet the Messiah. Thus, we the saints are the true laborers. Aren’t we indeed the true laborers who pray for the Kingdom of God, evangelize and honestly earn the money so that it can be used for the Kingdom of God? The true saints who shed sweat drops on their foreheads and not pursue others’ purses, but seek those who are more pathetic and poor than themselves to console and to provide aide are the blessed people who can meet the Lord.
II. Those that lost the opportunity after they heard the news of Jesus’ birth.
On the other hand, we see the people who lost the blessed opportunity to praise and worship even though they have heard the news of Jesus’ birth. Most typical example will be the owner of the inn or the guests who stayed at the inn. If the owner of the inn knew that the baby in Mary’s womb was the Messiah, do you think he would lead them to the stable/barn? He would probably try his best; and if there really was no vacancy, he would have given up his own room, welcome him and worship him. However, when he saw a woman in raggedy clothing and almost ready to give birth, the word “Messiah” did not cross his mind. This is likewise for the religious leaders during the time. The religous leaders such as the teachers of the law or the priests during the time even knew the place of Jesus’ birth, but they only answered the King Herod’s question, “where the Messiah was to be born?” They themselves did not even want to go see Baby Jesus, or even show an interest to find out more about him. As a result, they became the part of tragedy that couldn’t even see Jesus who was the Lord of eternal life and the Lord of redemption even though he was nearby.
III. Those that will stand before the Lord are those who give thanks with empty hearts.
In order for us to stand before God and glorify Him, we must empty our hearts and put all our past behind. Even though our Lord was born in a manger in Bethlehem in the Land of Judea 2000 years ago, we must empty our hearts completely and clean them to welcome our Lord into our hearts on this Christmas. During the time of Jesus’ birth in Israel, the society was corrupt as corrupt can be and the hearts were so wicked where the king stole his brother’s wife. However, all these commoners who met the Lord are those who were simple-hearted, honest, righteous, and lived with a clean conscience. When we abandon all our social status, education level, riches and the pride, we can stand before the Lord once again. When we look at Php 1:11, it is stated “through Jesus Christ–to the glory and praise of God.” When we reflect back on the grace we received from God throughout this year, all we have is thanksgiving. How can there be no thanksgiving when Jesus came for us, and how can we not welcome him with thankful hearts? Only those who execute the righteous and kind deeds that God likes and lend the helping hands to the needy can only welcome the Lord.
Conclusion:
In this Christmas, let us reconcile and resolve our differences with our enemies; and if there was sadness in our hearts, let us receive strength and consolation with the grace so that we can stand before God once again with grateful hearts.
탄생하신 예수님을 찾아 만난 보통 사람(평민)들
눅 2:21-39
인류의 시조 아담 한 사람의 타락으로 이 땅에 죄가 오고 죄의 결과로 사망이 온 것입니다(롬 5:12, 롬 6:23). 예레미야 선지자는 어떠한 비누로 씻는다 해도, 우리 몸을 뼈와 살로 추려서 양잿물에 삶는다 해도 그 죄의 문제를 해결할 수 없다고 증거하고 있습니다. 죄와 사망의 문제를 해결하시는 분은 오직 오늘 구유에 탄생하신 예수 그리스도 한 분밖에 없습니다. 그분의 탄생은 하나님께 영광이요, 사람들 중에 평화입니다. 오늘 여러분들의 마음을 다 비우시고 이분을 맞이하시기 바랍니다. 오늘 이 땅에 태어나신 예수님은 근심의 그림자도 없는 참평안 자체입니다.
그러면, 2천 년 전에 그러한 주님을 누가 맞이했습니까?
1. 예수님을 만난 보통 사람들.
예수님께서는 남의 땅이 아니라 분명 자기 땅에 오셨지만(요 1:11), 당시 어떤 권력자나 종교 지도자들도 예수를 알아보고 만왕의 왕이신 그분을 경배하기 위해 나아온 사람이 없었습니다. 오직 이름도 없고 빛도 없는 보통 사람(평민)들만이 천사의 지시를 통해 아기 예수님을 만나 경배하였던 것입니다.
먼저 성경은 시므온과 안나에 대해서 말씀하고 있습니다. 이들은 한결같이 ‘주의 위로를 기다리는 자’들로서 나이 많아 늙은 자들이었습니다. 그들은 아무도 인정해 주지 않고, 대접받지도 못하는 보통 사람들에 불과했지만, 그들의 일관되고 뜨거운 마음 중심을 보시고 성령이 늘 함께해 주셨습니다. 그 결과로 성령이 감동하사, 시므온은 성전에 들어가 할례받기 위해 오신 예수님을 알아보고 감격의 눈물을 흘렸습니다–“내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니 이는 만민 앞에 예비하신 것이니이다”(눅 2:30-31). 안나도 마찬가지입니다. 시집간 지 7년 만에 과부가 되고, 과부 된 지 84년이나 된 늙은 할머니이지만, “성전을 떠나지 않고 주야로 금식하며 기도로 섬겼던” 신실한 성도였습니다. 그 결과로 인류의 구원자이신 아기 예수님을 만나 본 것입니다.
또한 예수님이 탄생하실 당시에, 들에서 양을 치던 목자들이 천사로부터 탄생에 대한 소식을 듣고 동방박사들과 함께 경배드릴 수 있는 은총을 입었습니다. 목자들은 이 땅의 모든 가난하고 이마에 땀 흘리는 노동자들의 대표입니다. 그들의 신분은 비록 천하고, 힘든 직업이지만 순진하고 정직하였습니다. 사람 대접을 제대로 받지 못하는 사람들이었지만, 늘 깨어서 하나님 앞에 기도하며 메시아를 만나고자 하는 열망으로 가득 찼던 사람들입니다. 그러므로 우리 성도가 참다운 노동자입니다. 하나님 나라 위해서 기도하고, 전도하며 부지런히 벌어서 하나님 사업에 쓰이도록 하는 성도들이야말로 진정한 노동자가 아니겠습니까? 이마에 땀을 흘리고, 남의 주머니를 노리지 않고, 나보다도 불쌍하고 가난한 변두리 인생들을 찾아다니며 위로해 주고 구제해 주는 참다운 성도가 주를 만나 볼 수 있는 축복된 자들입니다.
2. 예수 탄생의 소식을 듣고도 놓쳐 버린 사람들.
반면에, 예수님의 탄생 소식을 듣고도 경배와 축복의 기회를 놓쳐 버린 사람들을 발견할 수 있습니다. 대표적으로 여관집 주인이나 여관의 투숙객들을 들 수 있습니다. 만약 여관집 주인이 마리아의 뱃속에 있던 아기가 메시아임을 알았으면 마구간/외양간으로 안내했겠습니까? 정말 정성을 다하고, 빈 방이 없다면 자기 방이라도 내어 주면서 맞이하고 경배했을 것입니다. 그러나 만삭 되어 곧 쏟아질 것 같은 산모의 배와 허름한 옷차림을 보고는 전혀 메시아로 생각하지 못했던 것입니다. 이는 당시 종교 지도자들도 마찬가집니다. 당시 서기관이나 제사장 등 종교 지도자들은 예수님의 탄생의 장소까지 다 알고 있었으면서도, “그리스도가 어디서 나겠느냐?” 하는 헤롯 왕의 질문에 답변하는 것으로 끝이었습니다. 그들 스스로가 가 보려 하지도 않고, 알려는 열심도 보이지 않았던 것입니다. 그 결과로 이들은 영원한 생명의 주요 속죄의 주인이신 예수 그리스도를 근처에 두고도 만나지 못하는 비극의 주인공들이 되고 말았습니다.
3. 주님 앞에 설 자는 빈 마음으로 감사드리는 사람뿐.
우리가 다시 주님 앞에 서고 하나님 앞에 영광 돌리기 위해서는, 마음을 다 비우고 지나간 과거는 다 뒤로 돌려야 합니다. 2,000년 전에는 유대 땅 베들레헴의 가축우리에서 주님이 태어나셨지만, 금년 성탄절에는 내 마음을 깨끗이 비우고 청결하게 하여 주님을 모셔 들여야만 합니다. 예수님 탄생 당시 이스라엘은 왕이 동생의 아내를 빼앗아 살 정도로 혼탁하며, 마음이 썩을 대로 썩은 사회였습니다. 그러나 주님을 만난 모든 평민들은 순박하고 솔직하며 정말 의롭게, 깨끗한 양심으로 살았던 사람들입니다. 모든 지위와 학식, 부와 교만을 버리고 살아야만 다시 주님 앞에 설 수 있습니다. 빌 1:11 말씀 볼 때, 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님의 영광과 찬송이 되게 하시기를 바란다고 하였습니다. 1년 동안 하나님께 받은 은혜를 되새길 때 오직 우리는 감사뿐입니다. 예수님께서 나 때문에 오셨는데 어찌 감사가 없고, 감사한 마음으로 그분을 영접하지 않겠습니까? 하나님이 기뻐하시는 의와 선을 행하시고, 가난한 자를 구제하는 사람들만이 주님을 맞이할 수 있는 것입니다.
결론:
금년 성탄절은 사람들과 원수 되었던 것을 다 풀고, 마음에 속상한 것이 있었다면 주시는 은혜로 말미암아 위로와 힘을 얻어 감사하는 마음가짐으로 하나님 앞에 다시 서는 역사가 있어야겠습니다.
