From This Day On, I Will Bless You
Haggai 2:10-19
The temple is where the eyes and the heart of God dwell. Hence, God will rejoice at anyone and will bless anyone who even has a desire to “build” the temple. Let us examine the background of today’s scripture text. The Israelites who returned from the Babylonian captivities started to reconstruct the temple led by Zerubbabel but it was interrupted by the interference of the Samaritans. To the Israelites who thought first of their houses before the temple of God and built them luxuriously, God sent Prophet Haggai to reproach them and to make them understand. What God was telling them was that He will bless those who even lay a foundation to build the temple. God will bless from “this day on” that such desire was set in the hearts.
I. We must have a heart like David.
In order to build the church, we must first have a heart like “David,” so we can be blessed. All throughout his life, David kept a longing desire to build the temple and prepared for it. If we look at 1 Chr 29:1-5, not only has David prepared the raw materials necessary for the temple from national resources, but he also wholeheartedly prepared from his personal resources, such as 3000 talents of gold (gold of Ophir), 7000 talents of refined silver, etc. However, to David who so desired to build the temple all his life, God said a word of a bolt out of the blue “You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood” (1 Chr 28:2-3). If it were an ordinary person, he would have had a change of heart when he was told not to build the temple even though he had prepared for it wholeheartedly like David. However, David did not have a change of heart in preparing for the temple construction and gathering the raw materials for the temple construction when he heard that he will not be allowed to build the house of God. Although his son, King Solomon built the temple, it was made possible because there was a longing heart for the temple and the preparation like King David.
II. There must be a willing heart.
When building the temple of God, there must be a willing heart. It is recorded in 1 Chr 29:13-14, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?” As you can see, David had such a joyful heart and willingly prepared the offering to God. He went on to confess “Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” When there is faith like David’s, there is willing heart. It is recorded that David offered with such generosity with willing heart that there was abundant surpluses after the construction was completed. In the time of Moses, God commanded to offer the raw materials necessary to build the Tabernacle with the willing hearts. He said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give” (Exo 25:1-2). As a result, it was such a great abundance that the Israelites offered with such generous hearts that later, they were restrained from bringing more because what they already had was more than sufficient to do all the work. As you can see, there must be the presence of willing hearts when in the process of the temple constructions. Not done forcefully but when there is devotion given with joy and happiness, God will gladly accept them. Like it is stated in Deut 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength,” if we do not give wholeheartedly, we can never partake in the commencement of new history of temple construction. In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, then started out with the willing hearts but they had a change of heart later and changed to unwilling heart. Even though they sold their property and offered the money, God did not gladly accept it because they did not offer it with complete joy.
III. We must have an enthusiastic heart.
The dictionary defines “enthusiasm” as “intense and eager enjoyment, overwhelmed with stimulation.” There has got to be an enthusiastic heart in order to build the temple. When our hearts are filled with the thanksgiving and overwhelming joy that we build the temple of God, which is what He rejoices the most, how can we fulfill this duty without getting excited about it? A physical attraction between a man and a woman cannot be accomplished without excitement. When there is excitement between the members of the church, it produces synergy so that they can concentrate on temple construction. When there is enthusiasm, there is joy. It makes you happy, excited, thankful and become interested. It is also stated in today’s scripture text, Hag 1:14, “So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel and the spirit of Joshua and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God.” As you can see, the temple construction should only be fulfilled by those who are excited and those who are filled with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The excitement that you felt when your children were accepted into the college they desired! The excitement that you felt when your business became successful! We need excitement greater than these in order to construct the temple of God.
Conclusion:
We don’t have many days left this year before we close. We need a heart of David when he prepared for the construction of the temple of God, a willing and enthusiastic heart. I sincerely hope that before we close this year, all of you will serve the church that is the flesh of the Lord with an enthusiastic heart and the heart of David.
오늘부터 복을 주리라
학 2:10-19
성전은 하나님의 눈동자와 마음이 머물러 있는 곳입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서는 누구라도 ‘성전 건축’에 대한 마음만 가져도 기뻐하시고 복을 주십니다. 오늘 본문의 배경을 보겠습니다. 바벨론 포로지에서 귀환한 이스라엘이 스룹바벨을 중심으로 성전을 건축하다가 사마리아 사람들의 방해로 중단되는 실패를 경험하였습니다. 하나님이 거할 성전보다 자신들이 거할 집을 먼저 생각하며, 고급으로 짓는 데 혈안이 되어 있는 이스라엘 백성을 향해, 하나님께서는 학개 선지자를 보내어 책망하며 깨닫게 해 주셨습니다. 그러면서 하시는 말씀이 성전 건축의 지대를 쌓기만 해도 복을 주시겠다는 것입니다. 그러한 마음을 먹은 ‘오늘부터’ 복을 주십니다.
1. 다윗과 같은 마음을 가져야 합니다.
성전 건축을 위해서는 먼저 다윗과 같은 마음을 가져야만 복을 받습니다. 다윗은 그 평생에 ‘성전 건축’에 대한 소원을 간직하며 준비한 사람입니다. 대상 29:1-5 말씀을 보면, 다윗은 성전 건축을 위해 국고에서 필요한 재료를 준비하였을 뿐 아니라, 자신의 사유물 중에서도 오빌의 금 삼천 달란트와 천은 칠천 달란트 등 정성을 다하여 예물을 준비하였습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 이렇게 평생을 성전 건축에 대한 소망을 가지고 준비한 다윗을 향하여 청천벽력과 같은 말씀을 주셨습니다. “너는 군인이라 피를 흘렸으니 내 이름을 위하여 전을 건축하지 못하리라”(대상 28:2-3) 하셨습니다.
여느 사람 같으면, 정성을 다해 준비했다 할지라도 다윗과 같이 성전 건축을 하지 못하리라는 말씀을 들으면 마음이 변질됩니다. 그러나 다윗은 성전 건축을 할 수 없다는 말씀을 듣고도 예물을 준비하며, 성전 건축을 준비하는 마음에 변함이 없었습니다. 비록 그 아들인 솔로몬 왕이 성전을 건축하긴 하였으나, 그것이 가능할 수 있었던 것은 바로 다윗 왕과 같이 성전을 사모하는 마음과 준비가 있었기 때문입니다.
2. 자원하는 마음이 있어야 합니다.
하나님의 전을 건축함에 있어서는 자원하는 마음이 있어야 합니다. 대상 29:13-14 말씀을 볼 때, “나와 나의 백성이 무엇이관대 이처럼 즐거운 마음으로 드릴 힘이 있었나이까?”라고 하였습니다. 다윗은 이처럼 즐거운 마음으로 자원하여 하나님께 예물을 준비했습니다. 이어서 다윗은 이렇게 고백하고 있습니다–“모든 것이 주께로 말미암았사오니 우리가 주의 손에서 받은 것으로 주께 드렸을 뿐이니이다”. 다윗과 같은 믿음이 있어야만 자원하는 마음이 생깁니다. 다윗 왕이 얼마나 넉넉하게 자원하는 마음으로 예물을 준비했던지, 성전 건축에 다 소용되고도 남음이 있었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.
모세 때도 하나님께서 성막 건축을 위해 필요한 재료를 자원하는 마음으로 바치라고 명령하셨습니다. “무릇 즐거운 마음으로 내는 자에게서 내게 드리는 것을 너희는 받을지니라”(출 25:1-2)라고 하셨습니다. 그 결과로 이스라엘 백성이 바친 예물이 얼마나 많았던지, 예물 가져오기를 중단하라 할 정도로 백성이 많은 예물을 자원하는 마음으로 가져왔던 것입니다.
이처럼 성전 건축의 과정에는 자원하는 마음이 있어야 합니다. 억지로 함이 아니라 기쁨과 즐거움으로 드리는 헌신이 있을 때 하나님께서 즐겨 받으십니다. 신 6:5 말씀에서 “너는 마음을 다하고 성품을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라” 하신 것처럼, 정성을 다 쏟지 않으면 절대로 성전 건축의 대역사에 참여할 수 없는 것입니다. 아나니아와 삽비라의 경우는, 시작은 자원하는 마음으로 출발했지만 나중에는 그 마음이 변질되어 인색한 마음으로 바뀐 경우입니다. 자신의 재물을 팔아 교회에 바쳤지만, 기쁨으로 온전히 드리지 못한 예물을 하나님께서 기뻐 받으시지 않는 것입니다.
3. 흥분하는 마음이 있어야 합니다.
‘흥분’이라는 말의 사전적 의미는 ‘감정이 북받쳐 일어남’으로서, 자극을 받아 신경이 갑작스럽게 작동하는 것을 말합니다. 성전 건축을 위해서는 이처럼 흥분되는 마음이 있어야 된다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 가장 기뻐하시는 성전을 건축하는 것에 대한 감사와 감격의 마음이 가득할 때 흥분하지 않고 어찌 그 일을 감당할 수 있겠습니까? 남녀 간의 사랑도 흥분되지 않고 이루어질 수 없습니다. 교인들 상호간 피차에 흥분되는 마음이 있을 때 상승작용을 일으켜 성전 건축에 매진할 수 있습니다. 서로 흥분될 때 기쁩니다. 기분이 좋고 신나고 감사하며 관심을 갖게 됩니다.
본문 학 1:14 말씀을 볼 때도, “여호와께서 스룹바벨의 마음과 여호수아의 마음과 남은바 모든 백성의 마음을 흥분시키시매 그들이 와서 만군의 여호와와 그들의 하나님의 전 역사를 하였으니”라고 기록돼 있습니다. 성전 건축은 이처럼 흥분된 사람들, 성령의 감동으로 충만해진 사람들이 감당할 수 있는 것입니다. 자녀가 원하는 대학에 합격했을 때 느끼는 흥분! 원하는 사업에 성취를 맛보았을 때 누리게 되는 흥분! 그 이상의 흥분된 심령이 있어야 하나님의 성전을 건축할 수 있는 것입니다.
결론:
올 한 해의 결산을 이룰 때가 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 하나님의 성전을 건축할 때 다윗과 같은 마음, 자원하는 마음과 흥분하는 마음이 있어야 되듯, 마지막 결산을 위해 흥분된 마음으로, 다윗과 같은 마음으로 주님의 몸 된 교회를 받들어 섬기는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
