From Start to Finish
2 Kings 14:1-7, Revelation 1:8
Eleven months had passed by since the great year of 2016 has begun. It makes us to realize that from the beginning to the end of the year, God who is the Alpha and the Omega, held on to us with His grace throughout this year from start to finish. Like it is stated in today’s scripture text, God says that He is “who is, and who was, and who is to come.” Our Lord, who is the Alpha and the Omega, confidently comes to us for the second time as the King and in the form of the Judge to rule on this earth. Before we close this year of 2016, we need to examine if we can stand before God who is the Alpha and the Omega with the confident fruits of faith. It is said that there are two types of people who will stand at the final judgment stand of the white throne. The one type of people cannot remember what they have done right but remembers only the wrongs they have done whereas another type only remembers what they have done right and not their wrongs. We can see this in Mt 25, from the parable of the sheep and the goats, in the image of those who stand on the right side of the Lord and the left side. If so, how are we standing before God, now that the whole year is almost gone?
I. We started off right but the latter is a problem.
When we look at today’s scripture text in 2 Ki 14, King Amaziah was a king who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (v3). “In the eyes of the Lord” in the original translation means “in the sight of the Lord,” which means that he acted honestly and upright before God and not corrupted or bent. As a result, it is said in v5 that “his kingdom was firmly established.” From this statement, we can speculate that King Amaziah ruled his nation justly in the beginning. Not only he established his nation firmly and made the hearts of people happy, he was an honest king in God’s eyes. However, the problem is that the king’s initial diligence did not last until the end. His honesty did not continue until the end. That is why it is stated in today’s scripture text 2 Ki 14:3, “but not as his father David had done.” Hence, even though he became a king at age 25 and ruled as a king for 29 years, he was ultimately faced with tragic end as a result. It is recorded in 2 Ki 14:19-20 that his government officials “conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. He was brought back by horse and was buried in Jerusalem.” Isn’t this such a tragic ending compared to how his life was in the beginning? When we reflect upon ourselves as we close this year, wasn’t our life like that of Amaziah who started off right but did not end right? There are Ananias and his wife Sapphira who appear in Acts 5:1-11. They first had pure faith and blazing devotion. That was why they have decided to sell their property and offer it as an offering. However, the problem is that their compassion did not last until the end. As soon as they sold their property and saw the money, they had a change of heart and decided to offer only a portion of it. As a result, they received a curse that they were buried on the same day and at the same time. Hence, before we close this year, we only have one conclusion. We must be “faithful to the end.” From start to finish, we must hold on to our Lord who is the Alpha and the Omega and make this year that the initial diligence will last until the end.
II. Even though we started off right, it is a problem to follow and resemble the wickedness.
Another problem of King Amaziah was that he resembled the wickedness of his father in the middle even though he started off right. If we look at 2 Chr 24, King Amaziah’s father Joash started off well in the beginning. When he became the king, he constructed the temple of God and gave burnt offerings daily to God through the High Priest Jehoiada and had many diligent acts of faith. However, after Jehoiada died, he worshipped the poles of Asherah and its idols and committed a sin of killing Zechariah the son of Jehoiada when he opposed this (2 Chr 24:18, 22). Therefore, Joash the father of Amaziah was killed in his bed when his government officials conspired against him (2 Chr 24:25-27). However, Amaziah followed the wicked path of his father to the fullest. Even though he started off right, Amaziah resembled the wickedness while following it. It is likewise in the case of King Asa. When we look at 2 Chr 15:1-15, King Asa removed the idols in the beginning and worshipped God, so the whole nation rejoiced while God was delighted. How much grace did King Asa received throughout 39 years of his reign? However, if we look at 2 Chr 16:10, God was irate when King Asa incarcerated a seer in prison and brutally oppressed him. So God afflicted him with a disease in his feet in order for him to realize this and repent; however, he did not seek help from God nor did he repent. Rather, he sought help only from the physicians and ultimately died when God struck him. Even though King David sinned like these kings, he repented truthfully to the reproach of God and returned to Him with initial diligence or truthful faith of a beginner; so he received God’s love to the end and was recognized as “a man after my own heart” (Acts 13:22).
Conclusion:
Every time we look at things, we must understand God’s Divinity and power. Hopeful year of 2016 does not have many days remaining. Have we really held on to the life of Jesus Christ this year? Are all vows made in the beginning or the diligence you had in your hearts in the beginning being maintained as the end of year is approaching? We must move forward with the identical faith and diligence from start to finish. I sincerely hope that all of you will hold on to Jesus Christ who is the Alpha and the Omega and devote yourself from start to finish.

대망의 2016년 새해가 시작된 지도 벌써 11개월이 지났습니다. 세초부터 세말까지, 알파와 오메가이신 하나님께서 시작부터 마지막 끝까지 은혜로 붙잡아 주신 한 해임을 깨닫게 됩니다. 오늘 본문에서 말씀하고 있듯이, 하나님께서는 “이제도 있었고 전에도 있었고 장차 올 자라”라고 하셨습니다. 알파와 오메가이신 우리 주님이 세상을 심판하시기 위해 당당히 왕으로서, 심판자의 모습으로 재림하시는 것입니다.
2016년도 한 해를 결산하기에 앞서, 올 한 해 알파와 오메가이신 하나님 앞에 떳떳한 믿음의 열매를 가지고 있는가 점검해야 할 것입니다. 마지막 백(白)보좌 심판대 앞에 두 부류의 사람이 있다고 합니다. 하나는 잘한 것이라곤 하나도 생각나지 않고 잘못한 것만 생각나는 사람이며, 다른 하나는 반대로 잘못한 것은 하나도 생각나지 않고 잘한 것만 생각나는 사람입니다. 마 25장의 양과 염소의 비유, 왼편과 오른편에 선 자들의 모습에서 이를 발견하게 됩니다. 그렇다면 금년 한 해를 거의 다 보낸 지금, 우리는 어떤 자세로 하나님 앞에 서 있습니까?
1. 시작은 바로 했으나 나중이 문제입니다.
왕하 14장 본문 말씀을 볼 때, 아마샤 왕은 “여호와 보시기에 정직히 행”한 왕입니다(:3). “여호와 보시기에”의 원어는 “여호와의 눈에”라는 뜻으로, 그가 하나님 보시기에 구부러지지 않고 정직히 행했다는 뜻입니다. 그 결과로, 5절 말씀을 보면 “나라가 그 손에 굳게” 섰습니다. 이로 미루어 보건대, 처음에는 아마샤 왕이 나라를 잘 통치했음을 알 수 있습니다. 백성의 마음을 흐뭇하게 해 주고, 국가의 기강을 바로 세웠을 뿐 아니라 하나님 보시기에도 정직하게 행한 왕이었습니다.
그러나 문제는 아마샤 왕의 처음 열심이 끝까지 가지 못했습니다. 그의 정직이 끝까지 이어지지 못했던 것입니다. 그래서 왕하 14:3 본문에서는 “그 조상 다윗과는 같지 아니하였으며”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그 결과로, 25세의 젊은 나이에 왕이 되어 29년간이나 나라를 통치했지만 그 결국은 비참한 최후를 맞이하고 말았습니다. 신하들이 모반하고, 결국 라기스까지 도망친 아마샤 왕을 끝까지 쫓아가 죽인 후, 그 시체를 말에 실어서 예루살렘으로 가지고 와 장사 지냈다고 성경은 기록하고 있습니다 (왕하 14:19-20). 잘 나가던 초기의 모습과 너무나 대비되는 비참한 최후가 아닙니까? 금년 한 해를 결산하는 각자 우리의 모습을 되돌아볼 때, 아마샤 왕과 같이 시작은 바로 했지만 그 ‘끝’이 아마샤 왕처럼 좋지 않게 되지는 않았습니까?
행 5:1-11 말씀에 아나니아와 삽비라 부부가 나옵니다. 이들 부부도 처음에는 순수한 신앙과 뜨거운 열심을 가졌었습니다. 그래서 자신들의 밭을 팔아 헌금하고자 결심했던 것입니다. 그러나 문제는 그 열정이 끝까지 가지 못했습니다. 밭을 팔아 돈을 보는 순간 마음이 변하여, 일부만 바치기로 결심했던 것입니다. 그 결과로 두 부부가 한 날에 무덤에 장사 지낸 바 되는 저주를 받았던 것입니다. 그러므로 올 한 해의 결산을 앞두고 우리의 결론은 하나밖에 없습니다. “끝까지 충성하자”. 시작부터 끝까지, 알파와 오메가이신 주님을 붙잡고, 처음 열심이 마지막까지 이어지는 한 해가 되어야 할 것입니다.
2. 시작은 바로 했는데 악을 보며 닮은 것이 문제입니다.
아마샤 왕의 또 다른 문제는, 시작은 바로 했지만 도중에 부친의 악을 보며 닮아 간 데에 있습니다. 대상 24장을 보면, 아마샤의 부친 요아스도 처음에는 시작이 좋았습니다. 왕이 되자, 하나님의 전을 건축하고, 대제사장 여호야다를 통해 날마다 하나님께 번제를 드리는 등 진실한 신앙의 행위를 가졌습니다. 그러나 여호야다가 죽자, 아세라 목상과 우상을 섬기고, 이를 반대하던 여호야다의 아들 스가랴를 죽이는 죄를 범하였습니다 (대하 24:18,22). 그리하여 아마샤의 부친 요아스는 그 신복들이 모반하여 침상에서 죽임을 당하고 말았습니다 (대하 24:25-27). 그런데 아마샤 왕도 부친 요아스 왕의 악한 길을 그대로 답습하고 말았습니다. 시작은 바로 했지만, 악을 보면서 닮은 것입니다.
아사 왕의 경우도 마찬가지입니다. 대하 15:1-15 말씀을 볼 때, 아사 왕도 초기에는 우상을 타파하고 하나님만을 경배하므로, 온 백성이 즐거워하고 하나님께서도 기뻐하셨습니다. 39년 동안 아사 왕이 받은 은혜가 얼마입니까? 그런데 대하 16:10 말씀을 볼 때, 아사 왕이 선견자를 옥에 가두고 크게 학대하므로 하나님께서 노하셨습니다. 그래서 깨닫도록 발에 병을 주셨으나, 회개하거나 하나님을 찾지 않고 도리어 의원을 먼저 찾으므로, 결국 하나님의 치심을 받아 죽임을 당하고 말았습니다.
다윗 왕도 이 왕들과 같이 죄를 범하였지만, 하나님의 책망에 진심으로 회개하고 돌이킴으로 다시 처음의 열심, 시작할 때의 정직한 신앙으로 돌아갔기에, 끝까지 하나님의 사랑을 받고 그 마음에 합한 자라는 인정을 받게 되었던 것입니다(행 13:22).
결론:
우리는 사물을 볼 때마다 하나님의 신성과 능력을 깨달아야 합니다. 2016년 대망의 한 해도 이제 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 금년 한 해 정말 예수 그리스도의 생명을 붙잡고 살아왔습니까? 처음 시작 때 품었던 열심, 서원했던 것들이 연말이 가까워 오는 지금까지 유지되고 있습니까? 시작도, 끝도 동일한 믿음과 열심으로 달려가야 합니다. 알파와 오메가이신 예수 그리스도를 붙잡고 시작부터 끝까지 충성하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
